Forgot to turn 2 of the divisions off attack mode. While everyone else is having a rest two divisions launch their own assault. I was amazed at the result. Perhaps it might pay next time to launch a follow-up assault the next day. Assuming, of course, that the completely beleaguered defenders continue to hold out on the smell of a dusty piece of ruble.

Japanese afternoon Air attacks on 61st Tank Division at 111,25 near Mogocha – 26 casualties (1 non-combat squad destroyed + 3 vehicles lost). 1 Ki-49IIa Helen lost to flak.

I went for broke in the following attack. The previous turn no less than 3 Russian units turned up in the hex to the rear of my assaulting units. I was certain that they were in strategic move mode. I went for a shock attack in the hope of bringing things unhinged. This was not to be as those strategic move units added their AV to the defence to bring about a successful defence of this base. My assault force is now locked up inside the Skovorodino hex.

Scratch one Taffey and heavy escorting vessles, how did this ambush come about?

SierraJuliet -> RE: 29 June 1943 (3/30/2017 8:51:27 PM)

Good planning in that I decided that the Petropavlovsk Operation better have good aerial support in the event that the Americans try to crash the party.

Mischance in that Todd decided to do exactly that on the assumption that the IJN would not have the heavy carriers present. The sub that was sunk got a sniff of this task force a couple of turns ago. Well more that a sniff. She did send 6 torpedoes at a CVE which all promptly missed. The turn before this took place I decided to move KB into a position closer to Petropavlovsk. I had a feeling that the time was right for whatever Todd had sent way up north to show up. I am inclined to think that it may in fact have been a cover force to shepherd in a supply convoy for the Petropavlovsk defenders whereas Todd has stated that they were hunting an invasion convoy of my own. I expected Todd would have picked up on the big carriers being present as Judys have been attacking his subs the day before. Subs... Todd has them present and I'm doing what I can to avoid them.

So a good result but I've given the Allies a good fix on the location of most of the best of the IJN carriers.

Edited to correct some poor spelling of 'Todd'.

Considering I have 7 of the big Japanese carriers in this TF 22 lost aircraft is a fair price to pay in exchange for the obliteration of an enemy TF. The big question is the location of the enemy CVs. I know Todd has been in the planning and prep stage for many a month now for his next big move on the empire and I reckon on those carriers being holed up somewhere waiting for the green light. They may come looking to exact some revenge but now that the composition of KB is known I doubt it. What Todd doesn't know is the location of Akagi, Kaga and all of the lesser carriers of the IJN. Without knowing where they lurk I'm inclined to think that Todd will hold off contesting the water around Petropavlovsk. To return to your original comment - yes the loss of minimal attack aircraft has left KB in a good position to protect the forthcoming assault on Petrolpavlovsk. That I am not looking forward too... a shipping blood bath if my knowledge of previous attempts to take Russian port, in other AARs, is anything to go by.

As for VPs. Definitely a good haul. I'm long past the auto victory screen but we still keep an eye on the VPs as something of a yard stick to judge where we are at.

Wow you are having some good days, now you captured Chungking!

Yes indeed. Two or three days of very good results with the capture of Chungking being the icing on the cake. Chungking was some long time in the taking. It does test patience levels when you hope for the final collapse only to see that the defenders conjure up enough spirit to hold the line. Having come this far in China one must persevere and hold on for the final victory at Chungking. The next order of business is to capture Kunming and that should not be too big an ask once some of the currently unemployed divisions at Chungking recover and get themselves moving into the mountains.

Todd, by the way, has offered up the following on the political mood within in the US. Firstly after the destruction of the taffy TF:

Admiral King has little to say in a meeting in the Oval Office. General Marshall asks if Europe shouldn't be the only focus until the Nazi menace is erased. He asks if it isn't wiser for the US to negotiate a ceasefire in the Pacific while a naval building program attempts to make up for the losses to date. Admiral King remains strangely silent and he's white as a sheet.

A day later after the surrender of Chungking:

FDR listens to Adm King admitting that the USN lags behind the IJN in the all important area of carriers. "Any engagement at in the near future could, in all probability, result in a disaster that would lose any hope of victory until 1948."

Gen Marshall chimes in with, "Then maybe it's time to reconsider things. With the collapse of virtually all Chinese organized resistance, the invasion of the Soviet Union and India all but in the Japanese fold do we have the manpower to face the IJA in combat?"

Gen Thomas Holcomb growls, "The Marines will carry the fight to the enemy, regardless of the odds. We don't have the word quit in our vocabulary. If the Navy can get my boys where they're needed we can cause problems for the Japanese until the Army finishes off the Germans."

Adm King says, "The Navy stands ready to continue the fight, for the present, but if things continue as they have I see no way to compete with the IJN until some time in the future."

FDR thanks them and calls an end to the meeting, pondering the impact that another major defeat would have on the morale of the populace and will to fight on. Maybe the anger of the people could be channeled with some help from Hollywood.

I haven't pushed them over the edge yet but the Americans are certainly on the verge of negotiation. I'm close but it would need yet another big one sided naval victory to do that.

SierraJuliet -> Production levels 1 July 1943 (4/2/2017 1:32:44 AM)

After some time neglecting this AAR for the usual host of other RL activities I've finally managed to get back into it and have it up to date. Thanks so much for all who have jumped back on board to read up on the current state of this match. Thanks too for churning away without so much as a hint of graphics to help paint the picture. I like doing this so here is a wrap up of some long neglected stats in this match.

First up is the current production levels

SierraJuliet -> The Borzya Salient (4/2/2017 3:23:25 AM)

The front line here has been quite fluid. After initially entering Mogacha my assault force had to pull back as Russian reinforcements came charging in from behind. We pulled out of the base and made a stand in the forests outside of Mogacha. We then made a play to come in from behind and surround the Russian forces. They in turn saw the trap and have pulled back to the forest hex where the battle icon is located. They were also reinforced by a further 2 units for the battle which just took place.

My intention now is to move on Mogacha with the original assault force whilst other units attempt to hold the line behind them.

Mogacha is held by one NKVD regiment of some 90 AV and no doubt behind forts of 3 to 4 level + the forest hex. I have allocated 20th Army, 28th Division, 11th, 12th and 13th Ind. Hvy. Art. Bn.s, 7th RP Gun Bn and 49th Construction Company to make the attempt on this base. Apart from cutting off the rail line I really want to get an airfield in operation at this location.

In the forest hex where the battle icon is I have 19th Division, 23rd Tank Regiment and 15th Med FA Rgt hunkering down. Coming to assist is 9th Tank Regiment, 2 AA units and 1 construction unit. The forest location is to our benefit here. Arrayed against them is a formidable Russian force made up of 61st and 111th Tank Divisions, 57th Motor Rifle Division, 103rd Rifle Division and 36th Army with AV of 1500+. The recent attack by the Russian saw them go in at 1-3 odds.

In the hex below we have 2nd Tank Division and 9th Medium FA Rgt. Not too much and it appears that possibly 4 Russian units may be attempting to smash their way across the river into this hex.

Below that at the road junction to Borzya we have 30th Division supported by 3 artillery units. There is a single Russian unit, at present, looking to contest this hex.

Coming up in support in the next hex is 17th Division, 3 artillery units, 1 Engineer unit and 2 construction companies.

Finally, about to cross the river, just out of Hailar is 3rd Tank Division.

Supply is going to be an issue as will the ebb and flow of aerial engagements in support of this operation. If Todd can force a break through this whole venture will become risky. If I can acquire Mogacha and get that airfield up and running I should be able to apply more aerial pressure in this region.

SierraJuliet -> Cliimb Mount Fuji (4/4/2017 1:00:36 PM)

I did this feat a couple of years ago. So daunting once you have moved off of the horizontal trail and moved onto the upward, ever upward, zig zag trail. There is a goal to be attained and it is a long march which must be taken one step at a time. The higher you go the more difficult each step becomes. Until at last you reach the summit and can look upon the vista that defines your achievement. The contest that is Pacific War AE can be likened to the struggle to conquer a lofty peak. There are goals to be achieved and sometimes they can appear to be tantalizingly close. But then again maybe not quite as close as you would like. Patience... and some very many good rolls of the dice, good fortune and the death of countless electron warriors bring you step by step closer and closer to your goal.

Today I achieved one. One I never dared to aspire to. It simply appeared to be a goal too difficult to contemplate. And that goal.... breaking the 5 to 1 VP barrier. Today I achieved this goal with the VP difference now standing at 5.202 - 1. Japan is still brittle as an egg tapped in wrong spot but even so she has made the western powers take notice and wonder just how will they claw back the territory that has been wrenched from their grasp.

Today I can rejoice for tomorrow it may all come crashing down. And to Todd.. when you finally do get to read this... thank you so much for sticking at this torment day after thankless day. There has been precious little for you to rejoice over but you have shown a remarkably desirable trait in any AE player - that is the ability to stay the course no matter how rugged the terrain. The mountain, however, stands before you. The Empire awaits the Allied fury.

SierraJuliet -> Shilka (4/5/2017 8:59:00 AM)

So, the Russians near Shilka have attacked and they are awesome. If it wasn’t for the massive number of disablements suffered by 19 Division I would have counted this as a good round. 65 Russian combat squads destroyed sounds good but the 57th Motor Rifle Davison is one that sports over 500 AV by itself. Happy too in seeing so many Russian vehicles disabled but they do have so much that I figure that unless they have major disruption they could easily back up and attack again next turn. I hope they have some significant disruption and as Todd plays conservatively I would err on the side of a couple of turns at least going by. Unfortunately, there are more Russian units on the way so the next attack is more than likely to garner 2 – 1 odds, or worse. As for 19 Division, it has AV now of only 192. 124 combat squads available but 189 disabled. Disruption is at 24 and fatigue is 14. Experience has moved on up to 61 and morale is a very good 98. The supporting artillery and tank regiment are fairly well unscathed. I have more armour on the way but it is going to take a few days for the first of them to show up.

So here is my dilemma. Keep these units here in the hope that they hold out until reinforcements arrive or withdraw back down the road in combat mode and look to hold the next hex. If the units stay in combat mode they stand the best chance of beating off an attack without incurring the movement mode penalty. If they stay they stand the chance of being routed where they stand. I guess they are a good chance of being routed whichever way I go.

What say you. Stand or beat an orderly retreat. I’m inclined towards a retreat whilst the Russians are doing their own recovery.

I plan on using as many bombers as I can to hit this hex next turn.

SierraJuliet -> Skovorodino (4/5/2017 9:07:05 AM)

Down the road at Skovorodino the Russians have raced in a couple of artillery regiments. They are going to hurt me in time. Lucky here so far in that no big Russian units have turned up. Supply, however, is going to be the issue as I have stupidly managed to allow my units to get locked inside this hex.

The land campaign in this part of the Russian sector could go either way. For the present though I think that Todd is in the better position. Things could sway from one side to the other on a turn by turn basis for a while.

Bif1961 -> RE: Skovorodino (4/5/2017 12:26:48 PM)

If he sees your movement indicator that might encourage him to attack sooner, which you don't want, so might be better to play possum and let him think you are still in good shape and pound him with air attacks to discourage him from attacking.

I like your thinking. Holding this hex is the better hex of the two. Whichever way I go it does to some extent depend on the outcome of die rolls. Vagaries of the battlefield no doubt. Still have to finish this turn off but I think you have helped swing me towards continuing to make a stand. The other thing is that I'm quiet clueless on the performance of a unit on the move but in combat mode when attacked. Standing and making use of the forest hex plus the level 1 forts does sound like the best option.
