Two questions concerning supply:

If the Germans have taken Odessa, their supply in the south will be much better, right? If I understand the manual rightly, this harbour can be used as railhead. If so - does it work immediatly or does damaged harbour means no or reduced supply?

Does a unit (InfDiv for example) get supply from its HQ or from the rail close to the unit? When I get new divisions I leave them under Stavka first to improve morale and experience. But if the unit gets the supply by the HQ this would mean that the trucks would have to go through the whole county. Or other scenario: If I bring one unit from one part of the front to another (from middle to north for example), do I have to switch it to another army immediatly or can I do it later since the unit gets its supply from the rail close to it? The units all have their own trucks, so it would be reasonable to think that they get the supply not via the HQ. But the manual says that the HQ is used as source of supply too.

Units will get supply from the railhead, not the HQ. They must be able to trace to the western edge of the map for the germans.

Having it's HQ in the right range will help, if the checks are done and successfull the unit should get full or better supply and replacements, if i understand correctly.

Michel.

From the revised manual

20.4.1. Tracing Supply
In order to receive supply, a combat unit first attempts to trace a path to the headquarters unit to which it is attached. The combat unit must be within both five hexes and twenty MPs of the applicable headquarters unit. In order for a headquarters unit to provide supply to its attached combat and support units, it in turn must be within both 25 hexes and 100 MPs of a railhead. If a combat unit cannot trace an eligible path to its headquarters unit, it will then attempt to trace a path to a railhead as if it was a headquarters unit, i.e. within both 25 hexes and 100 MPs of the railhead. Note that Air base and Rail repair units, though HQ units, are treated as combat units for supply purposes per the above. Also note the distinction between supply state and tracing supply, in that a unit that is within 100 MPs, but not within 25 hexes, is considered in supply, but nonetheless, will not be able to receive supply due to exceeding the 25 hex requirement.

and

20.4.1.2. Supply Trace over Water Hexes
Supply trace over all water hexes requires a port to port connection, with at least one of the ports being on the supply grid. This over water trace is normally free of cost in the same manner as rail hexes are part of the supply grid.
.
.
.
If the effective port value is reduced to less than one due to damage, then supplies may not be sent through that port. However, the port damage is reduced by 10% before the supply phase and only the smallest ports would have a value less than one after the 10% reduction in damage.

Always try to keep combat units in supply range to HQ and within 4 hexes of it, if it's not Corps (Axis) or Army (Soviet).

Ports are less usable due to getting max damage on capture.

4 hexes? Did you type wrong (4 instead of 5) or has this been changed from 5 to 4 hexes?

morvael -> RE: Supply by cities (1/28/2015 6:54:27 PM)

There was a penalty to leader rolls added for units assigned to suboptimal HQs (too high level). It was later rescinded for units within 4 hexes of the HQ. So if you have army or army group reserve units, keep them close to the HQ.

Units resupplying alone from railhead are at a severe disadvantage.

What about my armor brigade alone on railhead waiting for tank replacements? it is on refit, is it at a severe disadvantage for getting replacements?

Michel.
