bomccarthy -> Can't transfer US air units to Petropavlosk in Oct '45 (2/9/2015 8:40:09 PM)

I decided not to post this to the Tech Support thread, because I only want to see if anyone else has come across this before – It’s Oct 2, ’45 and I’m staging the 8th AF from the Aleutians through the Soviet Union to China (as well as through Pearl Harbor and central Pacific). However, I can’t transfer US aircraft from Adak Island to Petropavlovsk. The Soviet base is under the Soviet Far East Command, is up to a Level 5 airfield (if I recall, as I am not at my home computer at the moment, but Tu-2s are carrying out bombing missions from it), and has supply exceeding 30k. When I try to transfer a US unit to it using the drop-down menu, Petropavlosk doesn’t even appear on the list of available bases; if I try transferring using the map, I get a notation that the base is not available for transfer because of weather (which has been overcast) or distance. Yet I can transfer the unit to Sakhalinsk (or further, to Harbin).

Am I overlooking something, or was this intended (or is this something I should adjust in the Editor for my next game)?

The Russians don't like to share. Non-Russian units can't refuel in Russian ports and I believe non-Russian air units can't base on Russian bases.

Here's a quirky related question. In a current PBEM , two of my AVD's were given orders to go to Adak. They reset for USSR. I reset them twice more. Apparently these two ships really had their hearts on defecting to Rhodina. The next thing I find , is once again they've headed to the USSR (running themselves out of fuel. I docked , tried to refuel , without success. The next turn , they disbanded. I cannot reform them into a task force , so it looks like I won't get them back till late 1945. Ever see anything like this? [&:]

Interesting - so I can transfer them to the Manchurian bases captured by the Soviets (like Harbin), but not the native Russian bases, although all of them are under the Soviet Far East Command. Not that it makes a huge difference; I'm just a nervous Nellie transferring air units more than 50 hexes.

Yes it is. Just another facet of the game. Suck it up and live with it, or find something else to play. THAT's why I don't have a hellva lot of time for people who cry "gamey". [:D]

We had a B-29 have to land in Russia. We never got the plan back - the Reds reverse engineered it into the TU-4 Bull

From Wikipedia (Not the most reliable source but dovetails with other things I know)

"In accordance with the Soviet–Japanese Neutrality Pact, the Soviets were neutral in the Pacific War and the bombers were therefore interned and kept by the Soviets."

I've read that the foot petals were still marked with the American manufacturer, not sure about that one.

In AI games I have had planes divert to USSR airfields when their CVE sank. I was able to later fly them out onto other carriers.

Russian metallurgy was not equal to US at the time. Consequently they weren't equal to B-29s but they had nothing like a B-29 before and this surely accelerated their ultimate development of intercontinental bombers.

I should say that I don't think US metallurgy was at any time equal to Italian or Czech metallurgy.

geofflambert -> RE: Can't transfer US air units to Petropavlosk in Oct '45 (2/11/2015 2:56:57 AM)

I think the B-29 comparison to the B-29 clone was very similar to the attempts by the US to make reliable jet engines in comparison to the Junkers Jumo engines for example. Again metallurgy. The US caught up pretty quickly as did the Russians but trailing nonetheless.

wdolson -> RE: Can't transfer US air units to Petropavlosk in Oct '45 (2/11/2015 3:12:36 AM)

One of the US advantages over most of the last century has been being ahead in cutting edge metallurgy technology. For example, in WWII the invention of Alclad just before the war allowed US planes to be bare metal when they didn't need camo anymore. This could cut the weight of a plane by several hundred pounds.

You should read this thread

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3138880&mpage=1&key=soviet%2Cactivation

which whilst not exactly on point, does indicate the sort of issues which can arise. Note that the fixes mentioned are found in the betas so if you are not using them, this could be the source of your current issue.

Thanks, Alfred.

I think your link answers my question – I’m no programmer, but the movement effects of the differing country codes seem related to why the pre-activation Soviet bases are also off-limits to Western Allied air unit transfers (Vladivostok doesn’t appear as a destination choice either, even though it is within range). I’m running 1123x10, which I believe is the most recent beta, and the scenario is stock #6 (Dec 8 start).

You also helped me reach another decision which I had been contemplating – don’t try to land the RAF ground support at Komsolmosk, then rail them to Keijo (which should fall in a few days). They won’t move out of the port once they unload.
