wolf14455 -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/18/2015 1:54:48 PM)

Well I asked similair in the steam forum and no reply there either. Today I presented a querry in the slitherine forum about the lack of support in these two forums butno reply yet. Ofcource I did it after lunchtime and now its time for them to end the days work and I guess the dev dont check that forum either on day to day basis. Well I bought the game and really want to be playing again.

toddtreadway -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/18/2015 7:28:55 PM)

I am really interested in playing the new version also. It has taken a while, but I hope it comes out soon.

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/19/2015 12:49:11 PM)

The new 1.6.2 PC and iOS CTGW is a while now on the Matrix FTP, I hope they send it to Apple next week.

toddtreadway -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/19/2015 2:07:48 PM)

Oh, is it available for the PC currently, or are you waiting for it to go up on Apple before releasing it to the PC/Steam?

Never mind. I got it.

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/20/2015 8:49:37 AM)

Sadly we found a bug caused by a missing file , so we had to rebuild and check all again, they are now signed off and I hope Slitherine will send all to Apple next week and get approval asap, so we can finally release the official patch cross-platform.

We have to await Apple`s approval and release cross-platform or the cross-platform MP will not work...and we still did some other fixes compared to the 1.6.0 Beta.

I will post a full 1.6.2 asa the patches are out.

AdmiralSarek -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (2/23/2015 8:54:12 PM)

Sounds good, looking forward to the new version

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

wolf14455 -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/7/2015 5:46:36 PM)

I really thought it was done now and finally I could start playing this weekend. I gonna remind my self to think twice before getting an interest in game involving different platforms where Apple is the mediator. Badwill for Apple this time, I say.
My interest and eagerness to even come in here and check is dwindling.[:-]

operating -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/7/2015 6:06:33 PM)

I've been of the thought: That it may not be the fault of Apple, perhaps an in house screwup of some kind.. The bogus Steam update sends another signal that all is not right.

wolf14455 -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/7/2015 7:13:31 PM)

Hmmm, yup can be so too. I hope they sort it out soon as it a very good game. Long overdue to be played again.

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/8/2015 10:24:34 AM)

Beta testing is over and we expect Slitherine are preparing for the official cross-platform 1.6.2 patch.

Guessing here as we were not informed ourselves.

wolf14455 -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/8/2015 1:14:11 PM)

Ah, ok. Thanx for responding. Can you shead any light on your own opinion about this crossplatform issue? For me belonging to the old school PC gaming feeling a little sidestepped of sort. cheers

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/9/2015 7:23:02 AM)

Of course technically when you go for cross-platform development, it is unavoidable really to keep all versions on all platforms the same.

Logistically it is a nightmare for us as well.

But the benefit for the MP players is you can play against a lot more people and also play on any device you prefer.

A solution would be to take out the MP part of the game completely as it is less than 5% of the players that play MP, 95% or more only play SP.

For us we need the revenue of the extra platforms to stay afloat, a PC only game is even harder to handle commercially.

Games like CTGW hardly make a profit if you look at how much time, effort and development costs we spent building a custom engine and porting it, is not something we would do again.

Nowadays with initiatives like eg. Unity and Unreal commercial and community supported engines, we at least have a much cheaper and well supported alternative, that drastically reduce our cross-platform development costs, porting costs and time.

Simply put, a one platform PC only game, for us at least, would be commercially not viable enough to consider doing.

Cheers,

Tim aka LZ

Understandable. Thanx for clearing that out. Its a learning process I know. As you are making this pearl and propably will do it again. And I propably gonna buy it too, I hope the cross platform issues is mastered. [;)]
cheers

operating -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/9/2015 2:14:44 PM)

LZ,

Correct me, if I am interpreting your post to mean this is the end of Commander style games as we know it?

Bob

lparkh -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/9/2015 3:06:36 PM)

Speaking as a would be developer for Matrixgames I am hoping you mean "we ourselves will no longer develop PC only games" as opposed to "we will not accept PC only games."
I've been working on a PC only game for a long time and seen many PC only games at Matrix. Will you still accept such?
Otherwise this is going to be a very bad day :-(

p.s. I understand that there are further criteria than this for accepting games but I want to know I haven't doomed myself by developing for PC only.

Iparkh,

No, I am open minded to the inclusion of a changing technology world, however, if it means the demise of Commander model games or similar games then I would have to oppose it. My and others opposition may not save the day, for as LZ infers: It's the revenue side that shapes the world of gaming.

operating -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/9/2015 4:27:33 PM)

I'll say this: Without PC gaming, I think I would be all done buying games..

No, that would be an inaccurate conclusion. I rather would say that cross-platform releases are commercially wiser than single platform ones in the long run. Building a complete a complete new custom engine and port it ourselves is just no longer economically justified with alternatives as Unity around the corner.

Of course this is looking back, when we started designing CTGW these commercial affordable, well supported and community driven game engines, like Unity or Unreal cross-platform engines, were not around yet or were just servicing with very limited use. Now 6 years later, it is a big difference.

A new Commander game will come one day, just no idea where to plan it in at this point. A solution we are looking at, is looking for a co-developing partner, a good Commander game will economically do fine, especially as we have a good custom engine for it now. It would be a shame and a waste not to use it again.

Of course, PC by far is still the main and important platform, I would always advise to first develop a good and stable PC game before considering porting to eg. tablets. As patching and updating tablets and in general cross-platform is a logistic nightmare, you better do a solid PC game first before porting.

But you can develop a good PC while keeping in mind cross-platform ports in the long run and keep your design flexible with future porting in mind.

This is more or less the path we follow since a few years, we just try to design good fun games and concentrate on PC first, but try and keep tablets in mind while designing and planning. Think of containing memory consumption, in what code you will write, will you go 2D or 3D, etc...

Warhammer 40,000 is a good example, iOS will come later this year, but we first will iron out and stabilize the PC version, but tablet ports were taken into consideration day one when we started planning and designing some years ago.

Having more markets to sell on is just a wise business strategy if you want to stay afloat in this business. Just my personal 2 cents here.

Tim aka LZ

LZ,

Got ya: Unity at: http://unity3d.com/unity

Unreal at: https://www.unrealengine.com/what-is-unreal-engine-4

Will this allow Johnny Bravo more time for "Support"?[:D]

Thanks, Bob

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/10/2015 2:46:01 PM)

New official 1.6.2 patch is due any day now though... I was told somewhere this week.

lparkh -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/10/2015 3:48:32 PM)

Thanks for response. Today is a good day :-)

Rodwonder -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/10/2015 10:00:01 PM)

Great news! Been waiting for this!

Lord Zimoa -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/11/2015 9:29:01 AM)

Got word from Slitherine, the new CTGW 1.6.2 patch for all platforms will go live now upcoming Friday the 13th.

operating -> RE: still very eager to play the new (upcomming) build (3/11/2015 3:17:19 PM)

LZ

Do know this: Between the Steam update fiasco, and this new delayed patch business, the 10 or so MP matches I had going all but dried up. Going through gaming withdrawals, mostly from having a blast from day to day to just plain boredom, not a place personally I like to be.

Bob
