Max 86 -> NY Times underestimate Hitler in 1922 (2/11/2015 8:17:43 PM)

From the first article the NY Times published on the dude with the funny mustache:

"But several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semitic propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic, and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes"

LOL, I did not realize the NYT's penchant for being blind to radicals like this went back so far. Great find.

Maybe the article was written by an anti-semite, maybe the writer was a willing pawn, or maybe - like many others of the time (and even later) - he genuinely believed that Hitler was a force for the good who would bring order back to a defeated Germany.

The article looks really bad now because of what we know, but a great many people were taken in weren't they - Germans as well as foreigners? Hitler was very good at telling people what they wanted to hear - ask Neville Chamberlain or Josef Stalin - and his PR department was pretty good too.

I wonder how many other papers and articles were written in the western media in the 1920's and even 1930's that were sympathetic - or at least neutral to this man and his party? I suspect more than we would like to think.....

Anyway this is 1922. Hitler was only the boss of a small ultra-right movement. and there were tons in Germany. And after all, let's not forget that almost everyone (even among the left parties) was anti-semitic, racist. And I am talking about Germany, the UK, France, the US etc etc. That was a normal thing back in the 20s. Post 1945, yes, those ideas sound strident (well, not everywhere, but that's politics) but before that date... [;)]

If Hitler had died in 1938 he probably would have gone down as the greatest german statesman since Bismarck.

Very interesting perspective. Also of note, AH was sent to prison two years later in April of 1924 after the failed "Beer Hall Putsch"

The NYT runs dozens of articles a day 365 days a year. I am sure there are 1000s of radicals profiled over the years that ended up having almost no effect on history.
They got this one very wrong, that does not cast a shadow on every article they have ever run however.

Ranger33 -> RE: NY Times underestimate Hitler in 1922 (2/13/2015 2:35:15 AM)

Just look at the Spanish Civil War. Even when the Germans were making great strides in the field of intentionally bombing civilians, there was plenty of tangible support for fascism among American businesses and politicians. Which isn't really surprising.

Ah yes. The ny times sure loves the fundemental transformers of nations. Here is a nice piece about another radical, sean penn, and his hero.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/04/world/americas/04venez.html

Today, amid huge shortages, the bolivar slipped to 170 per dollar. Since there is hardly anything on the store shelves, including toilet paper, it might be more viable for Venezuelans to use the bolivar, or that other useless paper, the ny times.

They hoped and it changed.

Here is a nice ad in the ny times rag of their current radical maduro. Ah, the virtues of the low info voter/subscriber.
