This is an interview with "Grey Hunter", a wargamer that played out a game of War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition at the real-real-time rate of 1 day/turn at a time, and chronicled the game on the internet.

I'm going to undertake to read both of these. We'll see how long my interest and enthusiasm hold up!

So far, it's a pretty interesting read... much more detail than you normally get in an AAR (as well as explanations of game mechanics included).

rhondabrwn -> RE: Interview with a WITP player (2/21/2015 10:46:58 PM)

A curse on you for turning me on to this :(

I am so hooked on this that I've been staying up half the night viewing it! His style of doing an AAR is so detailed that it is almost like you are playing the game. So it's... "one more day"... just "one more day".... well "A few more"... unti the sun comes up!

I'm up to turn 717 (11/23/43) at the moment. Getting a lot of ideas for my own play... things to do... things to avoid like the plague [:D]

Hunter's style of play reminds me of US Grant... he throws troops, ships, and planes against the enemy from the first turn... knowing that the losses will be made up by American production and that sheer numbers will eventually overwhelm.

Some interesting developments:

Most of southern and central China has been cleared of Japanese forces, Hongkong, Shanghai, and Canton have all fallen to the Chinese forces. Bombers based in Shanghai have been bombing Nagasaki shipyards and industry for over a year now doing over 700 points of strategic losses to Japan.

The Solomon Islands and New Britain as well as most of New Guinea have been reclaimed along with the Marshal Islands, Wake Island and more. Current assaults are underway in the Admiralty Islands. Much of Burma has been reclaimed and Rangoon is besieged.

Ship losses, however, are over 900 including numerous carriers, cruisers and battleships. The repair yards are constantly filled with damaged ships. Escort carriers are thrown into the front lines like they were expendable PT Boats and they die about as fast.

Definitely gives me ideas (at least against the AI). Lots of ideas for things to avoid doing too!

This has been well worth my time :)

Hey!! This is awesome. I have started reading the AAR too. I love it. I have only read partway through December 41 though. He does AARs like I like them Short and to the point with just straightforward facts and not much prose.

rhondabrwn -> RE: Interview with a WITP player (2/22/2015 6:30:54 AM)

Yep, his style is much more accessible than your typical text based AAR. It really feels like you are right there watching the game playing out. He also includes a lot more of the action than a typical AAR that pretty much skips over everything but major developments. Of course, that's why Hunter's file size on the total presentation is about one and half gigabytes (read that in one of his comments).

This really has me fired up again and I just started a new campaign game this evening with the intention of actually playing it through to the end! A lot of things are making more sense after viewing Hunter's commentary and numerous screenshots. I think that after seeing the details of a thousand (or more) land battles, I can actually understand why things happen the way they do... finally! The air game has finally snapped into place for me as well (though I did get the benefit of some newby help articles in the Witp:AE forums on some of the more esoteric aspects of fighter / bomber /escort mechanics that Hunter didn't have access to when he wrote this). I'm also finally comfortable with the mechanics of managing shipyard repairs and much more that you need to see first hand rather than just reading the manual.

I just reached the end of 1943 and it's been a real suspenseful roller-coaster of a ride. I have no doubt that I will read it through to the end.

I also started his WiTE LP and that promises to make the intricacies of that game accessible. Haven't gotten very far with that one though, I got too absorbed in the WiTP LP instead.

And in addition to the WITP (and WITE) LP(s)/AARs, by Russell Joynson and so many others, there are also larryfulkerson's epic TOAW AARs/DARs, such as Playtest of Pacific at War 3 25 14, Field Marshal Fogger vs Marshal Fulkerson (again), etc. No to mention for all the other games.

There's just not enough time to read them all...

JocMeister -> RE: Interview with a WITP player (2/22/2015 4:51:16 PM)

Go look at the AAR section on the AE forum here at matrix games. There are several going all the way to 45 including at least one "mirror AAR"

For what it's worth, I finished reading the entire Grey Hunter Witp:AE LP this morning around 3 am. It gave me a "feel" for the game that less graphic intensive AAR's have never really provided for me. As JocMeister indicated, there are plenty of excellent AAR's in the forums, but I've found them to be heavily reliant on the reader understanding the game mechanics as discussion tends to focus on detailed strategies and tactics without really explaining the basics. Hunter's LP showed many of the game screens with explanations so it was really valuable to me.

His strategies were interesting, but I learned more about what not to do as he recklessly threw away battleships and carriers (he lost 35 CVE's in the course of the game, for example) as well as expending many troops and resources attacking every Japanese held island or base that he could... definitely didn't use the historical strategy of neutralizing and bypassing. The result was a bloodbath of men, ships, and planes.

Nevertheless, it was a fascinating exercise and well worth the many, many hours it took to read every bit of it.
