DoubleDeuce -> SPWAW Tournament ? (4/3/2001 11:24:00 AM)

Just wanted to see what kind of interest there might be in a multiplayer Tournament using SPWAW. I have started working one up but thought I would test the waters before getting too involved. Let me know what you all think on this subject. I have set up a framework website for this but need your input to flesh it out. Also, I have extra webspace for hosting scenarios, campaigns, etc. Just let me know. Thanks.

Hi, I've watched your site and read the draft description of the tournament. It's a good idea and I'm interested to join when ready. But why don't consider victory hexes in tactical combat?! I think the game became only a enemy hunting without other objectives. If not forced to catch objectives I'm afraid that both players will endlessly hide and wait to ambush the enemy...

Im into multi player, I laugh my butt off all the time in multi player games with all the chat back and forth count me in :)

Actually Objective hexes will be integrated into the tournament battles (I just haven't detailed that on my site yet). I am just working on how best to use them. I am also waiting for 5.0 to come out so I can play with the new features and determine how to incorpoare them into the tourney. Input like yours and the others on this forum is what I am looking for to fill in the details of what the tourney will include. Since I wanted the points per side to be almost even in the battles I was concerned that using any objectives wrong would give the defender too much of an advantage. This may encourage one side to just sit back and dig in forcing the other side to make suicidal assualts with 1 to 1 odds (not good). If you have any specifics on how I may implement them just let me know. Thanks.

What we used to do back in sp3 was make the middle hexes off limits, and use only your home base hexes, This makes for much more movement and action, instead of static defense type game. You may give it some thought :)

Wow paralell evolution -- I just posted about a week ago to the MGN forum an idea I had about a "dream" league where we had an operational level to the standard tactical. Hats off to you Double Deuce for taking some initative. Looked at the Sitrep and it looks like a lot of fun. Count me when ya got it running.

Way to go DD! Love the idea. Can't wait to join. The site is fantastic. Looking forward to the tourney.

I am curious though what year you're going to pick for the OOBs. Makes a big difference -- for example the Poles in 1945 are far, far stronger (esp. with the heavy Soviet tanks).

DoubleDeuce -> (4/5/2001 11:37:00 PM)

Well I was looking to use 1938-1939 OOB's. Keep the heavy weapons to a minumum! Waiting on SPWAW 5.0 so I can review the OOB's etc before posting the actual unit compositions. This will primarily be an Infantry tourney. I am still experimenting to find a way to keep the tourney equally balanced at least at the start and so I want each side to have the same # of points. This creates a problem when one side is forced on the offensive especially since the defender will have as many points as the attacker. My basic concept is to design it in a way so as create fluid battles (kill as much men and materials without losing much yourself). Points gained for destroying enemy forces (with a smal amount for objective hexes) will determine the "winners". Terrain/positions on the operational level map will not be a dominating feature. If you feel you are tactically better in built up areas, keep your unit on an urban type hex. Units will be company size with little if any heavy weapons. Tanks and Air are virtually nonexistant. As I mentioned earlier, Objective hexes will provide only a small amount of points so some terrain will be good to take in the TACTICAL battles but it will not infuence the main objective, kill or be killed! I also want to emphasize that this will actually be a test run tourney. Things will be kept small and move quick. Once completed we will review what worked, what didn't and then I would like to move to a larger scale. I want to ID any problems that may surface in this small cut down version. I am seeking players who want to help me build and flesh this out. If something doesn't work lets talk about it and find a better way for the next time. You will need to have a thick skin for this tourney. Things may appear totally out of balance or situations not making alot of sense sometimes. Again, we will work on it. And for those who stick it out and provide input (even in a seemingly ridiculous situation against obvious and absurd odds), I'll find a way to incorporate your ideas/suggestions AND offer you the first choice of positions when the bigger one comes along. Thanks again for you input on this project.

Although I must tell you that I have never played a PBEM game, someone would have to teach me the ropes. Let me know! Boro

Drex -> (4/6/2001 7:33:00 AM)

If you use Victory hexes. why not make them hidden to the other side? Multiplayer tournament sounds like fun to me.

DoubleDeuce -> (4/6/2001 9:53:00 AM)

Hi Drex. That is kind of how I'm planning to do it. All tactical battles will be limited to 10 turns. All Victory Objectives will only pop up if discovered (set to 15+ turns before activating on the map - sooner IF DISCOVERED). Thanks Matrix, I really love that feature in this game. Opens up a whole new world of opportunity! BORO. No problem I am sure we can handle the PBEM thing. If you have any questions dealing with SPWAW this is the best place to find them.
