Michael Vail -> Soviets (3/7/2015 4:06:56 PM)

I'm setting up my 1st turn in a GC against Jap AI. I'm using Kull's spreadsheet as a good starting point (with my own changes). I'm curious though if setting the Soviets to expand Port, AF, or Forts make any difference. For instance, does it use up allied supplies faster than if they didn't expand? Thanks.

It does use supply. There might be a couple of little out of the way places where that will make a small shortage for the troops, but mostly it will not be a problem. AFAIK supply will not flow out of the Soviet Union to China anyway, so you will not be 'fixing' that problem.

I do expand all the Soviet bases as far as possible in my own games, but you must also give attention to building fortifications if you are playing a human opponent in case they decide to swarm across the border! And, if you are thinking about expanding the Soviet bases as part of a sense of realism, they were very wary of a Japanese invasion at least at first so I am sure that they worked hard to fortify IRL (I don't know that, but I presume it).

Seems to me that Sovs are separate from the general run of Allied supply req'ments, though they will drain replacements for support squads. However, they do seem to rely on their own supply arrangements, I've never seen a Sov base get nasty 'cos it don't have enough supply, & the nearby Chinese are so starved generally, they don't give anything away to the Sovs.

I agree based on experience, which is to say I didn't do anything scientific, but I'm not completely talking out of my ***. [:D]

One thing I would suggest for sure, given the deep common pools, is to set the Soviet ENG units to reinforce. Most of them are missing ~50% of the support squads.

To Michael Vail {with tongue firmly stuck in cheek}

I leave all bases to expand. The peasantry needs to work for the state. I never worry about whether they have enough supplies
because there is a war on and we must all must make sacrifices for the state. If anyone runs out of supplies, that is just their
sacrifice to make for the safety of the motherland and the party. If anybody complains, they will be rounded up and sent to
re-education camps to count trees.

Josef Stalin

Seriously, I've never bothered much with the Soviets. Playing the AI, I really don't have to. I have not seen indications of lack
of supplies, but I honestly haven't looked real hard either.

Michael Vail -> RE: Soviets (3/10/2015 11:38:11 AM)

Good enough. I usually set them all to expand and then forget about them anyway. I think I was just looking for justification (excuses) to not cycle through all the bases and change them. Thanks.

That and getting all the units set to training and getting reinforcements.

When the balloon goes up, I want everyone ready.
