Still working my way through an initial turn and have a question regarding the Stay at Sea Phase.

What do I have to do? As I understand it surface ships (combat) have to return to port if in the '0' section, as do ships with cargo, save convoys. If I've say a BB and a CA in the '2' box that I want to remain at sea, do I need to move them to the '1' box during the Stay at Sea Phase? Does the same hold true for land based air?

Thanks

Stay at Sea for me is the most tricky phase and a source of numerous reloads from autosaves. To directly answer your question(s), to keep a ship at sea you need to left click on it which will move it down a box and change its bubble status indicator (upper left) from green to purple. If the ship you want to keep at sea is not at the top of the stack you can right click on the stack and select next unit until you get to the ship you want. Then you left click to move it down 1 box and keep it at sea.

In general CPs will automatically be put on sentry and remain at sea MOST, but no 100%, of the time. So you need to carefully examine all your sea areas to make sure the CPs you want to stay at sea do and the ones you don't will return to base. I find the Naval Review form very helpful for this. In my example, I've enable "S + S", which means show section and status. In this particular example 12 of the 15 CPs in the Bay of Biscay will stay at sea (purple bubble indicator) and 3 will return (green bubble indicator). If you didn't intend to send the 3 CPs back to base then you can right click the CPs and select sentry.

In my example, 12 CPs, CA Terror and CA Erebus (top of the stack of box 0) will stay at sea.

A recent change to the program now allows you to return CPs that were on sentry. Be very careful with this too. Do NOT left click on a sentried CP during the return to base phase unless you absolutely do want it to return. If you make the mistake of left clicking a CP you don't want to return, it's impossible to return it to Sentry, and it's impossible to end the phase without returning it. You'll have to reload from the auto save and do over to get what you want.

I was always having great trouble with my convoys in the stay at sea step, until I discovered that the global map will tell you how many convoys are staying at see if you click on Allied (or Axis, for the Axis) convoys on the global map. This makes it much easier to see where convoys have decided to go off sentry. If you see only three convoys in the North Atlantic, you know something has gone wrong.
