Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #2. Land Combat. Lille, France.

12. In their second assault on Lille, the Germans roll better than average. Not a spectacular roll, but at least this time it was better than average. Lille falls and both French defenders are destroyed. The German success is not without cost. The Germans lose a 1-4 division and see half of the remaining attackers disorganized.

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #2. Land Combat. Reims, France.

13. Now that's like it! There's the rolls that I've come to expect and love from the Germans. They roll a 7. Well, at least is wasn't a 2 or 3! And at this time I had a 1-5 mot available to the absorb the required loss.

14. In order to keep their offensive going, von Leeb and Rundstedt are use to reorganize all 6 ground units disorganized by the two attacks.

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #3.

15. The fine weather worldwide continues except for the band of rain across the equation, which turns to storms. It must be the rainy season in the North Monsoon weather zone.

16. As much as I hate it, but the CW takes another combined. They have plans that require it. To commiserate with the CW player, the French player also takes a combined. Of course, so do the USSR and USA. Only China takes a land.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/16/2015 3:11:45 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #3. The Western Front.

17. The CW use their two naval moves from the combined to move Alexander and a 5-4 infantry corps out to sea. These forces next impulse will land in France. Over next turn, two more CW ground units will be transported to France to reinforce Alexander's second BEF army there. The decision has been made. CW is doubling down on their commitment to the defense of France.

Jul/Aug 1940. The Eastern Med. Naval Battle.

18. The RN decides to go looking for the strong RM cruiser forces that's been operating openly in the Eastern Med since Italy declared war on the CW. The RN does find and winds up surprising this force. The net result is that the RN manages to sink 3 RM light cruisers and force a fourth to abort. The cost is that the RN loses 1 light cruiser.

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #4. Land Combat.

19. The Germans decide to launch three land combats across the entire French front. They do manage to get the units in place such that all three attacks can be made on the Blitzkrieg CRT. The first of these three attacks is on the BEF in Boulogne, France. With the situation looking like the CW is going to expand the BEF in France, the Germans decide that it's going to have to be aggressive against the BEF if it wants to take France before the Fall rains set in.

20. In this first land combat, the CW player rolls slightly better than expected. Again, not a spectacular roll but at least above average. Disappointing is that the two CW units are only forced to retreat instead of being shatter, or even destroyed. Though disorganized and forced to retreat, the two CW units still remain in France.

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #4. Land Combat. France[56,32].

21. Well, that's how to roll!

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #4. Land Combat. France[55,32].

22. The axis player wasted a high roll on this attack. Hopefully they still have one left for the assault on the Greek mountain corps.

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #4. Land Combat. Greece[71,48].

23. Nope. The axis player rolls a 6. This whole invasion of Greece is turning out to be a bad idea. The axis probably should have waited.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/16/2015 3:52:22 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #4. Reorganization.

24. The last organized German HQ and a Ju 52 transport are use to reorganize four German ground units. The net result is that all German ground units on the Western Front are now organized and are ready to continue their offensive this turn. Though, short of playing an O-chit (which I won't do), there are no other German organizational resources available for the remainder of this turn. Well, there is a German transport and amphibious unit but it would be almost certain death for these units if they were moved into the North Sea to provide reorganization. So, I won't do that either.

2 more CW units in Greece and the theatre turns into a crapshow for the Axis, unless they have the means to crush Yugoslavia.

Centuur -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/16/2015 6:50:02 PM)

With all the losses in France, I expect that Germany hasn't got any reserves left anymore. So an alignment of Yugoslavia by the CW will be a large blow to Germany.

Usually, it's a bad idea to attack Greece in 1940, before France has been dealt with. Neither Italy nor Germany can spare the units to conquer Greece...

I'm finding out the painful way that "shortcuts" that work in other strategic level ww2 games don't work in MWiF. German and Italy have really got themselves in another mess haven't they. [:(]

That's my plan for next turn. I have two CW TRS in the East Med that dropped off the two CW units that are now there. And I plan to use them to drop two more units off next turn. Question. In Egypt I have Wavell's HQ, 7-3 inf corps and a 3-2 territorial. Can I use the territorial, and 7-3 corps, in Greece for this? Or, does it need to be Wavell's HQ and the 7-3 CW corps?

The HQ, INF, and TERR are all Commonwealth corps, so any of them will do nicely.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:16:24 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #5 and Axis #6. Weather.

25. The fine weather except for storms across the equator (North Monsoon) continues.

26. The CW takes another combined. Though limiting, these actions are necessary as the CW needs to do both naval and land things this impulse. France and China take a land. The USA and USSR take a combined.

Allied #5.

27. The French make an attack in the south in attempt to cut off the German breakthrough there.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:18:29 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #5. French Land Combat. France [56,32].

28. The French manage to shatter a German motorized corps and isolate a Panzer Jag I division. Though they lose no units, two French garrisons are disorganized.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:26:38 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #6.

29. All three axis take a land.

30. A German artillery division ground strikes a French stack containing a 4-3 infantry and a 5-2 militia corps. It also contains a 2-3 AA division that's already disorganized. This stack will be the subject of a German land combat.

31. The artillery attack (i.e., ground strike) is unsuccessful. The French 4-3 and 5-2 corps remain organized.

32. No matter, the German player rolls well. Two of the French units are destroyed and the third is shattered. The Wehrmacht advance into the vacated hex.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:29:00 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #6. Chinkiang, China.

33. In China, the Japanese ground strike the lone Chinese defender holding the city of Chinkiang. The ground strike is a combination air (Ki-51) and artillery attacker. It too is unsuccessful. The Chinese unit remains organized. This hex will also be the subject of an axis (Japanese) land combat.

34. Like the previous German attack, the failed ground strike is overcome by a very good land combat roll. The Japanese capture the city. The only downside (for the Japanese) is that the USA takes notice and reacts by pulling a chit for the Japanese entry pool.

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #6. Land Combat. France[56,32].

35. Back in France, the Wehrmacht make the two disorganize French garrison pay the ultimate price for their attack on and shattering of the German 8-4 motorized corps.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:49:56 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #7 & Axis #8. Weather.

36. The weather remains the same except for that the storms across the equator (North Monsoon) lessen a bit to just rain.

Allied #7.

37. The CW takes another combined. Maybe combines aren't all that bad if you're the CW? France and China take a land. The USSR takes a combined and the USA passes. There's a 10% chance of the turn ending at the end of this impulse.

38. The reason behind the CW taking another combined was that they want to try to catch the Italian cruiser force in the East Med and they needed to move their corps in France. Both the RN and RM fail to find each other in the East Med so all that was a bust for the CW.

39. The end of turn roll is a 2! The allies, who would have been happy to see the turn end, just missed it!

Axis #8.

40. All three axis take a land.

41. The Japanese in China make a strategic bombing raid on Kweiyang, Chain. Even a 1 PP reduction in Chinese production is major. The Japanese raid fails. It has no effect.

42. The Germans, who have no organized HQ units in France, conduct three land combats. One of these land combats is preceded by an artillery ground strike one a stack of two units containing an organized 5-3 French infantry corps and a disorganized 3-2 AA division. The ground strike successfully disorganizes the 5-3 corps.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:52:36 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #8. Land Combat. France [54,30].

43. The first land combat, which is NOT on the hex ground struck, is partially successful. The partial disorganization are disappointing.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:54:21 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #8. Land Combat. France [55,30].

44. This land combat is on the hex that was successful ground struck. It's an overwhelming success and provides the Germans with their second hex adjacent to Paris.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 12:55:33 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #8. Land Combat. Rouen, France.

45. Another good land combat roll by the Germans.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:22:32 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #9 & Axis #10. Weather.

46. Good weather for the Germans continue in France, but only if the turn which has a 30% of ending after the allied impulse continues.

Allied #9.

47. The CW, again, takes a combined. They need to move their units in France and they want to give trying to engage the Italians in the Eastern Med another go.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:27:55 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #8. The Eastern Med. Round 1.

48. It's the Italian RM that manages to find and surprise the RN looking for them. The Italians are able to isolate and engage the CW convoy escorts in box 0. The result is is that one RN cruiser is sunk and the other two escorts are forced to abort. This leaves the 5 CW convoy points there completely unprotected. Both the CW and Italians stay and the naval combat proceeds to a possible second round.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:32:06 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #8. The Eastern Med. Round 2.

49. The second round of naval combat also goes the Italian's way and they finish what the started in round 1. 4 Greek CPs are sunk and 1 CW is aborted. This clears box 0 of all CW ships and convoys.

50. On the positive side for the CW, what's not shown is that there are 2 French CPs in sea box 0 that can now be used to transport the two CW resources that are flowing through the Eastern med. Still, losing 4 CPs hurts.

51. Both the RM and RN decide to stay and the naval combat proceeds to a possible third round.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:36:38 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #8. The Eastern Med. Round 3.

52. The third round of naval combat goes decisively in the favor of the CW. 3 of the 6 Italian cruisers in the area are sunk and 2 are aborted. This leaves a lone cruiser backed by an Italian fighter in box. The Italians decide to stay in order to maintain supply to their forces in Libya. Of course their hope is that further combat can be avoided through a failed CW search. Of course the CW stays and the naval combat proceeds to a potential fourth round.

[image]local://upfiles/31901/31BB9BD8B744402E84035DDF9BA6FAA1.jpg[/image]

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:39:22 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Allied #8. The Eastern Med. Round 4.

53. The lone remaining Italian cruiser and fighter do manage to give RN search planes the slip. The Italians are able to avoid further combat and the naval battle in the East Med ends. By remaining in the area, Italian forces in Libya stay in supply.

54. The allies hope (again) of this being the last impulse of the turn is thwarted by a roll of 6 against the the 30% chance. So the Germans will get the chance to continue their attacks in France.

rkr1958 -> RE: Historical Global War AAR #2 (4/18/2015 1:48:07 AM)

Jul/Aug 1940. Axis #10. The Western Front.

55. The Germans briefly toyed with the idea of making an assault directly on Paris this impulse. However, the odds were just too low and in the end they decide to make two higher odds attacks in preparation for the attack on Paris their next impulse (if the turn continues for two more impulse, which is unlikely) or next turn.

Land Combat. France[57,30].

56. The first of the two land combats doesn't go well. The Germans roll a 5, have to lose a 6-4 motorized corps and see the remaining attackers disorganized. On the up side, the Germans did manage to kill the lone French defender and take the hex. And, since none of the attacking units were in a hex adjacent to Paris, the possibility of an attack on Paris later this turn, if this turn continues, remains.
