Smirfy -> Wellington Question (4/5/2015 9:30:12 PM)

Why cant the Wellington upgrade to Liberators or other Heavies?

Denniss -> RE: Wellington Question (4/5/2015 10:33:31 PM)

I assume 2 vs 4 engines so in theory it's blocked (should be something to add for the retrain option).
I'm able to switch RAAF and RCAF Wellington Squadrons to 4-mot bombers. RAF units with non-standard names too. Smells buggish.

Helpless -> RE: Wellington Question (4/5/2015 11:23:27 PM)

There is an old restriction for the US 2E->2E conversion. Not a bug.

Smirfy -> RE: Wellington Question (4/5/2015 11:26:18 PM)

Most of the Wellingtons in the Med ended up Liberators and Im sure most ended up Halifax or Lancaster with Bomber command. I Think Hampdens Whitleys and Wellingtons should have a path to Heavies

Not quite Wellington but should Beaufighter VIC not be CW?

Pavel, do you know why they made Wellington's until the end of the war? The British discontinued many better bombers but kept this one plugging along.

In the Battlegound Italy you cant upgrade the RAF Wellingtons to heavies, the Commonwealth yes RAF no.

Yes, you are right. This is also very old restriction for the British groups I was not aware of.

I am not sure many 'better' bombers than the Wellington were taken out of production. The Wellington was kept in production in 1942 partly to keep up the number of front-line aircraft which could attack the Ruhr, as switching production to different types would have resulted in delays. The Wellington faded out of use in the Bomber Command main force later on, but continued in less threatening theatres as a proven, robust bomber. It was a versatile design and was used for reconnaissance and anti-submarine work, and was employed in odd tasks such as dropping flares to illuminate targets for intruders at night.

In games it is often easy to swap over production to entirely new models but in reality designs often continue in use long after better ones are available because they are already in quantity production and have demonstrated their usefulness. The P-40 is a good example.

'The Design and Development of Weapons' by Postan, Hay and Scott in the volume of the British official history which covers aircraft production, and you can get it as an ebook very cheaply now.

Denniss -> RE: Wellington Question (4/6/2015 9:30:54 AM)

Dont' forget the Med and Pacific where the Wellington was made good use of. Served as patrol aircraft, the classic medium bomber roles of anti-shipping and ground support, transport and many other roles. Compared to the 4-mots it was a rather cheap aircraft.

Smirfy -> RE: Wellington Question (4/6/2015 11:46:59 AM)

It helped as well that it's skin was made out of doped linen like the Hurricane which the UK produced domestically in huge amounts so both marks weren't a critical resource or shipping hog.
