Felcas -> Khibiny advanced ECM system - HOAX or true? (4/17/2015 1:17:01 AM)

I saw this video today and I was wondering if this is a hoax or true information.
In short it says that last year a pair of Su-24 equiped with a new kind of super advanced ECM pod called Khibiny sucessfully jammed a US Destroyer, turning off all its tracking and targeting system and performing 12 simulated attack maneuvers over the ship before leaving the destroyer in a show of power.
Something tell me this is too super powerfull to be true but I am not a specialist.
Please tell me what you think or know about this.
Thanks

It's hugely unlikely. The news reports that describe this are all from Russian State media (and the less reputable ones at that), and depict events that didn't happen (an immediate return to port, a mass desertion). Coupled with the insanity of displaying the ECM equipment like this (why would the Russians ever give away their trick like this), the odds of this actually happening are more or less nil.

Indeed, not very likely. I have seen several variations of that story and it seems questionable at least.

I have yet to see a photo of the Fencer with Khibiny suite. Su-30SM and Su-34 ? Yes, saw these. Also note that that Fencer is swept wing A/C and the suite looks like it's designed to be mounted on the wingtips. I think that the suite would collide with the frame in swept back position.

Well there is a project for Su-24M2 with limited version (only DECM) of Khibiny (KS-418)

and as I say in this post:

this project is dead after decision to change all Su-24 for Su-34,

anyway this version of Khibiny do not have OECM capabilities

Thanks for the details. This moves the incident further into the fantasy realms, as I have thought.

On other hand, I can understand that the contemporary DECM could have caused targeting problems for the vintage AN/SPY-1D's FCR. If it wouldn't, it would be rather silly investment for the VVS.

That centerline pod looks an awful lot like the Sorbtsiya pods carried by the Su27 family, Sorbtsiya is also DECM only. It would not be unusual for the Russians to take a current product, update it a bit and re-"market" it under a new name/designation, (another example of this would be the MiG-33, an uprated MiG-29 for export).

Also, "turning off all its tracking and targeting system" seems rather over-exaggerated.
