Here is a bit of trivia: The patent for the landing gear that retracts straight back (as used on the P-40, F4U, and F6F) was owned by an aircraft manufacturer that only put it in one prototype aircraft that never went to production. What was the manufacturer and what was the prototype? Bill

Stevo, I know you love this stuff. Patent US2,065,146A, to Roy Morse, Lysle Wood, Dec. 22, 1936, assignee Boeing Co,. The seminal patent for longitudinal plane landing gear retraction with 90 degree oleo strut rotation. Used on many aircraft. Vought paid royalties to Boeing for use on its planes. Ciao. JWE
