warspite1 -> Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 1:51:32 PM)

Okay folks - how about this one?

She was not the only ship in her class so how can you tell for certain which one she is?

Name the ship and what makes her unique - and thus identifiable from this picture?

witpqs -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 2:12:11 PM)

Looks like HMS bill folder. [:D]

warspite1

bill folder!?!? Do you mean a wallet old chap? [:)]

...and no, she's not British.

AW1Steve -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 2:18:42 PM)

She's Italian.

warspite1 -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 2:30:06 PM)

Are we talking about the wallet or the ship now?

Seeadler -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 3:03:42 PM)

Italian heavy cruiser Pola of 1930-1931 program. Intended as flagship, some differed from remaining by increased fore superstructure pooled with the fore funnel.

warspite1

You say some differed - was Pola unique in that regard? That was not the thing that I had in mind.

Was she the only one of her class that flew a bleedin' wallet from her bleedin' fo'castle then?

So please say what it is you are asking for. My guess is Gorizia.Ciao JWE

Rising-Sun -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/21/2015 4:50:01 PM)

Well it look like Italian Cruiser, my guess it the Gorizia.

warspite1

Not Gorizia - Seeadler was correct. It is the Pola. There is something about her design that makes her different from her sisters - and this difference is apparent in the picture posted.

However, Seeadler suggested another difference so I am looking into whether that is unique to Pola or not.

warspite1

Okay so it appears that there are two areas that made Pola unique (and thus could be identified from the limited section of the ship shown). The one Seeadler referred to - enlarged superstructure - and the one I was alluding to - no curved indentation in the hull sides at the aft end of the forecastle.

Well done Seeadler [&o]

JeffroK -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/22/2015 6:57:02 AM)

She was sunk, nearly, by Warspite??

Seeadler -> RE: Who is she? ETO (4/22/2015 3:25:28 PM)

I have built a plastic model of the Pola many years ago. So I remember her quite well. [;)]

They were nice looking ships - under-rated too.

Orm -> RE: Who is she? (4/23/2015 6:54:57 PM)

Can you name the ship?

Would it help if I tell you that this Italian Lady was born in Britain and served in the US navy during the war?

AW1Steve -> RE: Who is she? (4/23/2015 7:30:08 PM)

I think I'll name her "Bob". [:D]

That is not nice considering she served both in the European theatre and the Pacific theatre.

I am afraid I have not been on this forum enough so I didn't get the joke. [:(]

It is only recently that I have had the energy to delve deeper into this forum. So I lost out.

Edit: I suspected that it was some sort of joke but I had no clue. So I attempted to give a clue about the ship at the same time as I fumbled the joke.

And now I do not even know what I am writing. [:D]

geofflambert -> RE: Who is she? (4/23/2015 8:27:14 PM)

Is this the source of the joke?

Many years ago , a much beloved denizen of the original "The Thread!!!!" created a thread that he called "Bob", so that he and the other players in his "2x2" PBEM could inform each other of who's turn it was. This became the source of much amusement over the years. "I think I'll name this thread BOB" has often used as the punchline when some one says "name this fred". This fellow , known as "the penguin" , or his log-in name of Fabertong , started a procedure to see who can get his post as the top one of "THE THREAD"'s next page. (AKA as a UNP). His particular technique was to do a chain of posts, one right after the next , usually with one word, spelling a message. In the USA this is called "A Burma shave sign" after a 1940's road way advertising trick of one sign after the other , each containing part of the message , ending with "use Burma shave!".

Sorry for assuming you'd been around long enough (from the date of your joining and the post count) to be familiar with this. [8|]

Yes. But during the first years I was only at the MWIF forum, then I joined the MWIF Beta Test forum and eventually I joined the general forum.

Here I only went when I wanted to know something specific about the PTO. Or, as entertainment, read a AAR thread.

The game I have own for a while but I have yet to begin a game in earnest since I fear that all my available time will be consumed by it.

Oh it will take all your time. But come over to the dark side...we have cookies! [:D]

Orm -> RE: Who is she? (4/23/2015 9:25:00 PM)

I suspect that I will eventually join the dark side.

I might even have an opponent available for a game. [X(]
