All of my opponents quit in '42 so I can guess how you feel.

You are swift![:D]

And merciful [;)]

spence -> RE: Unhappy (4/30/2015 10:51:08 PM)

As a strictly Allied player I have had most IJ Players quit about the same time as Allied fighters START to get good AND numerous. It seems to me that the ideal scenario would be something akin to the Guadalcanal Scenario but not confined to the South Pacific (May 42 - Dec 43 or so). If there are really that many players who want to send their cyberwarriors off to certain death as kamikazes then let them enjoy that particular masochistic situation as an add-on scenario rather than the premise of the whole game.

Big B -> RE: Unhappy (5/1/2015 1:49:54 AM)

Well, this is why (as a modder') 1942-mid 1943 is so important to get right/make interesting... most games NEVER go beyond 1943 ... usually one side or the other call it quits.
Even though the forum has the collective wisdom of "Don't worry about losses in 1942 - you'll get plenty more" The reality is - MOST PVP games don't survive 1943... Japanese or Allied.

Numdydar -> RE: Unhappy (5/1/2015 4:07:47 PM)

Well as A JFB I have gone the distance in my PBEM games. Into '45. It may be weird (but then you have to be weird to play this game at all [:D]) but I actually enjoy seeing the rain and death of destruction the Allies can bring. Along with my rapidly diminishing ability to impact anything in a meaningful way. So I think a LOT of JFBs are really missing out by not playing through to the end.

After all if you start a trip and stop half way through, you really do not get the full experience. [:)]

geofflambert -> RE: Unhappy (5/1/2015 7:18:45 PM)

I understand stopping in '43 if you're playing the AI because that progressively becomes unchallenging with the AI doing really stupid stuff. But playing a human (or a gorn) who's happy to keep going? Life intervenes sometimes, like when your mom's basement floods. [:D]

It is hard watching the endless bombing replays, but I just learned of the beauty of the F10 key during replay. Haven't tried it yet, but will shortly.

Treetop64 -> RE: Unhappy (5/2/2015 8:22:45 PM)

I can kind of understand your frustration. Your opponent quit right before the Allies - the US in particular - starts stencilling out vast quantities of new kit. If he had hung in there until late '43 and played smart, it could have been a very different game. On the other hand, it does appear that you were clubbing the guy pretty hard, and he had very little to show for it. Turn after turn, theres only so much of that one can take.

Numdydar -> RE: Unhappy (5/3/2015 3:00:45 AM)

Really [:'(]? If that were true no one would play Japan past '43 [:D]

Feltan -> RE: Unhappy (5/3/2015 3:39:07 PM)

Instead of quitting, he should have formally surrendered. If he was a stand-up guy, he would have mailed you a bottle of Sake via snail mail.

I get no enjoyment from pummeling an opponent who is not having any fun, and who has no hope of making it a challenging game. However, there are ways to terminate a game that is a forgone conclusion without appearing to be an ass. I've never held it against an opponent to pull the plug when things are totally hopeless, and I wouldn't insist on a game to '45 if one side was simply on a roll and operations were the same difficulty as training maneuvers.

Feltan

So after nearly three years of playing an opponent ( who shall remain nameless ), I received an email today saying that he is throwing the towel in.

WHAT!?[:@]

This has made me very unhappy. We had reached 27 March 1943, and both sides still had everything to play for.

I was playing the Axis, he the Allied.

Now its all down the toilet.
Made me very dispirited and very wary about starting another.

You were lucky, my Allied opponent has just quit on me in April 42... just too hard to find good opponents that go the long run. And then I don't even think that should be 46 or so, I'd be happy if it ends some time in late 44 if the situation is hopeless.

Walker84 -> RE: Unhappy (5/5/2015 7:09:09 PM)

My longest-ever PBEM got into December 3, 1943 before my Allied opponent threw in the towel. The reason? I wasn't even beating the cr*p out of him; he simply lost heart because he couldn't bear the micro-management and specifically the overhead of prepping, planning, and retaking all of the islands I had captured up to this point. One hilarious bit (in hindsight) was when he landed an unprepped Marine Raider Unit on Ocean Island and found that I had an unobserved Naval Guard unit there. He got so mad at this tiny reverse that he concluded that playing this game with its "100 day rule" for the past 3+ years hadn’t been the smartest use of his time.

I'd take this game in a heartbeat if I had another slot open. This is fun time for the Allies. How do you quit now?

Anyways, it would be a great challenge to try to pull this one out of the fire against a good and committed opponent.

Sounds just like real life to me,

Numdydar -> RE: Unhappy (5/5/2015 11:27:54 PM)

You notice I said no one. Since I most definitely have played in '45 as Japan, that means at least one JFB has gone the distance. Plus I'm sure I am not the only one either [:)]

You are not. In original WITP, I am playing Japan and the game is in April '45. We have been playing six years+. My opponent is a guy I have known and gamed with for over 40 years.

The situation is grim for me in that game, but the VP tally looks like we will go the distance into '46.

Hey, what does F10 key do?

Encircled -> RE: Unhappy (5/6/2015 12:03:07 PM)

Bit gamey really using F10, it shoots down all the P-47s

Lowpe -> RE: Unhappy (5/6/2015 12:28:41 PM)

Oops, sorry I was mis-informed. Try the F8 button during combat replays.
