I think the game loads the whole scenario into memory. So initial long loading times (also in multiplayer), but runs reasonably well thereafter. And yes, I normally create the map as big as possible [:D]. I usually start with a large number of units, say battalions. Then I often reduce it to regiments after some testing. I like my games to be as historically correct as possible, but still playable of course. Pushing the envelope keep the devs on their toes [;)]
