jmalter -> what's your idiosyncracy? (5/11/2015 6:58:08 AM)

I play 2-day turns against the IJ AI, & I've got a few things that I do, for reasons of 'enhanced realism'.

For example, if a TF must transit the Panama Canal, I send it to the 'near' side (remain on station), & when it arrives I'll homeport it to the 'far' side & send it thru at Cruise speed. After the transit, I'll send it on to its intended destination. A self-imposed slow-down, but I do it b/c it 'seems right to me'.

What self-imposed restrictions do you place on your game-play?

Bullwinkle58 -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/11/2015 11:19:09 AM)

Your habit isn't a slow-down. It's smart. In the off-map movement chart on pp. 98-99 EC to Cristobal direct is 45, while EC to Balboa direct is 60. Balboa-Cristobal is 1 at on-map movement rates.

I always go EC to Cristobal, stop, transit at Mission, then set my Pacific side destination.

bush -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/11/2015 1:30:22 PM)

I am a "vs. the AI" person also so I transport everything going to Southeast Asia manually. I never use the auto shipment from East coast of USA to Cape Town and/or Aden. Also, I never use the intel screens re: Japanese intentions. I do not use any PP to reassign British/Indian units. If they are designated as an only India unit that's where they stay. Same with Aussie and N.Zealand forces. I do not pull any of them from their home countries.

pontiouspilot -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/12/2015 2:18:39 AM)

I refuse to shoot down planes with beautiful naked women piloting!!

Yaab -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/12/2015 6:47:24 AM)

My self-imposed rule against the AI:

Da Big Babes C scen 28 vs AI difficulty is set to HARD

LOGISTICS

Allied combat units (those with Assault Value) can only use supplies from their respective nations.
Nations are divided as follows:

Commonwealth (British, India, Burma, Malaya, Australia, New Zealand)
Dutch
USA
Soviet
China (China may use US supply, provided the US supply is moved from USA to India first, or later
directly to China)

Combat units include: infantry, tanks, AA, artillery, CD, paratroopers, combat engineers, air units (except recon)
Thus, a US infantry unit on Java must use US supply brought by ships from Continental US.

Non-AV units (Base forces, construction regiments, air and land HQs) can use any supply.
This means 47th Construction Regt can sail to India and use Indian supplies (which represent food/construction materials)

SHIPS

- ships can reload weapons only in their nations’ bases using nations supply i.e
CA Houston cannot replenish ammo in Sorebeja, Dutch subs cannot replenish torps in Singapore. Either an AKE needs to be brought or an xAK needs to bring resupply for AKE

- no change of Allied Submarine captains on Dec 7---change takes place only after the first patrol is completed

- ships using off-map movement can only use Cruise speed – slower tempo of operations

-fuel can only be moved by TK/AO/YO ships --- slower pace of operations, more escort assets tied to TK/YO/AOs, slower gamep0lay

- amphibious invasions only with AP/AK/APA ships (as per Symon’s suggestion)

- LST ships cannot travel on their own (as per Symon’s suggestion) – proper convoy needed to cross from USA to Pacific islands

- TF in port are disbanded when they reach10/10 or 9/9 detection. This is to avoid Nell and Betty airstrikes into CAP --- Japs have good pilots in the beginning, it is worth to keep them longer in play

AIR

- ground bombing needs to use minimum safe bombing altitudes for GP bombs ( the corresponding altitude table can be found on the Internet). Level bombing of ships doesn’t need such rule.

- single engine aircraft need to be transported by xAK/AKV/CV over big bodies of water

- all ground-port-air-city B-17/Liberator/B-29 bombing mission have to be preceded by photographic recon. Naval search-attack doesn’t need prior recon.

CHINA

- only air units will go to China ---no LCU, AA, tank reinforcement

- Chinese air unit can only fly to India via Kunming/Myitkina --- no jump over Himalayas ---
aircraft don’t have pressurized cockpits

HQ

- no HQ breakup for their support/naval support squads distribution to several bases

I dont play the AI. Like clubbing baby seals to me :p

Encircled -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/12/2015 8:56:04 AM)

Caring for my forces like I'd raised them from birth.

Probably not a bad idea, unless you happen to play the Japanese.

Which I do.

rockmedic109 -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/12/2015 2:55:39 PM)

At the start of a game, I move all the USN xAKs in the Indian Ocean area to the US west coast.
I move the Aussie ships in the same area back to Oz.

rms1pa -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 5:11:00 PM)

as an AFB/AI player (baby seals its whats for breakfast)

mine is the self imposed rule "except for xakls to little places" nobody sails alone. 2cls and 3/4 dd TFs are my sniper/assassins.

this saves me from whining about the" emperors track team".

That must be a Canadian thing, I have the exact same rule!

AW1Steve -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 5:46:30 PM)

USS LST-342 goes to the east coast and anchors. And spends the rest of the war there. My wife's uncle died aboard her when she was sunk off Tulagi.

HansBolter -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 7:00:12 PM)

I do whatever it takes to ensure that Pappy Boyington is my leading Ace.

He is the first AVG pilot top be sent back to a frontline squadron (always where the action is thickest) after going to TRACOM when the AVG withdraws.

He always gets the best plane available.

I have been known to relegate close competitors to reserve to cool their heels while he runs up his count.

And most importantly I have been known to scrap a game if he gets KIA.

Lecivius -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 7:48:51 PM)

PDU off. Adds a whole new dimension.

nashvillen -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 8:49:21 PM)

I try to avoid sinking the Hibiki - it is bad luck to sink that DD.

nashvillen -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/13/2015 8:54:18 PM)

Also, G Roddenberry stays in a training squadron.

Have to make sure Star Trek will be invented.

Nice.

Glen floatplanes on submarines, nothing else....

Flicker -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/16/2015 1:08:03 AM)

I play vs AI, so these are things I may not do if playing PBEM.

I try to ensure that historic commanders get their ships, e.g., LCDR D.W. Morton (Mush Morton) gets the Wahoo.

HQs / LCUs go to appropriate theaters, e.g., Southwest Pacific goes to that theater. LCUs that are bought out go to the newly assigned theater.

I assign national armies missions / areas, e.g., British and Commonwealth units lead the recapture of Malaya. American units lead the recapture of the Philippines.

Ship upgrades must be started within the month they become available (unless upgrade is temporarily waived by the theater commander - um, me).

Units always dig in first (after capturing or occupying a base or city the unit must build fortifications before building port / airfield).

Just for fun, I have some 'family' squadrons, i.e. every pilot in the squadron has the same last name.

I am careful with my soldier's lives.

Feltan -> RE: what's your idiosyncracy? (5/16/2015 4:56:56 AM)

I won't set an a/c unit to train above 80%.

I know that I can, but I also know that 20% would routinely be off-line for preventative maintenance and not available in a training situation.

The only time I go to 100% on anything is when the dire straights of combat are upon me.

Regards,
Feltan

Some interesting things posted here, thanks!

I'm gonna adopt a few things, notably Cruise speed ONLY for off-map convoys. I've examined my conscience, & decided it's a 'cheat' to run off-map convoys at full-speed, since they never run low on fuel or accrue steaming damage.

They refuel in Brazil and the Carib.

The in-transit re-fueling is reasonable, but the immunity to steaming-damage for global-range travel at the full-speed setting is harder to justify.

Your pointer wrt the difference between EC>Christobal & EC>Balboa distances was interesting. My method of transit was b/c I wanted to emulate the transit-time thru the Panama Canal, but it seems the game-devs were there ahead of me, & that my idea to 'slow down' that movement turns out to be marginally faster than the game allows!

You do know that Boyington is no longer the Marines leading ace, right?

I think Warspite1 does AE turns in silk stockings and a corset. Or so he says. Not that there's anything wrong with that as an idiosyncrasy.

Phew, just finished a marathon WITP-AE session and it didn't go well. Just took a huge torpedo in the rear.....

... Didn't manage to sink Yorktown but it was close..

You should try it - it could be comfier to be honest, but when things are going well in the game you don't really notice the chaffing [:)]
