Yogi the Great -> The end of Windows (5/12/2015 10:52:38 AM)

So a quick news piece this morning said that Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be the last major version.

Future will have only small patch/updates but no longer will they issue major changes.

Just wondering if any of you in the know can explain what that means the future may hold.

Will the PC and windows be dead (with all out games)?

Will there be a total change to a new type operating system?

Time to buy a Mac?

Or Relax, all will be ok?

Why it doesn't matter if Windows 10 is (or isn't) the last version of Windows

Gilmer -> RE: The end of Windows (5/12/2015 12:04:25 PM)

I think they have said they would change the name and their OS will start being named differently than Windows.

Crimguy -> RE: The end of Windows (5/12/2015 6:00:40 PM)

Windows is in some respects extremely annoying. DOS command structure is outclassed by running a bash shell. Registry entries. Batch files.

It's my hope they create a new OS that is Unix-like in its operation. From scratch. With a Windows compatability layer for legacy software.

Dare to dream.

Was Windows NT 4 supposed to be something like that? New Windows from scratch with MS-DOS compatibility for legacy software or whatever...?

gradenko2k -> RE: The end of Windows (5/12/2015 8:42:21 PM)

Microsoft saying "Windows 10 is the last version of Windows ever" today is kind of like if Matrix said "War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition is the last version of WITP:AE ever" six years ago

That is, we're technically still playing the same game, but in the age of the internet and patches and constant connectivity, you can make a piece of software evolve to a whole hell of a lot without ever actually issuing another sequel. For another analogy, we're still using "Steam", but it's gone through an incredible number of changes in the decade or so since its first release.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: The end of Windows (5/12/2015 9:55:11 PM)

This is one reason I never upgraded past Vista and never would have upgraded from XP but I needed VISTA for work they told me. I still have XP on most of my computers still. But, I KNEW something like this would happen and I was just waiting for it. Now with a lull perhaps in OS's I can upgrade to 10 feeling confident I will get to use it for as many years as I've used XP. Thus, I got to bypass and save money from not buying into Win 7 or Win 8. [:)] Hopefully I'll be on the way out before Win 11 comes along. But, you'll carry the torch won't you WINGS and WARSPITE ole boys? hehe[:'(]

Jagdtiger14 -> RE: The end of Windows (5/12/2015 10:18:59 PM)

As a consumer, they should have stopped while they were ahead, and that was at XP.

7 was pretty excellent as well imho.

95 was very good, XP was great, and 7 was very good.

CGGrognard -> RE: The end of Windows (5/13/2015 2:15:29 AM)

No worries. Windows OS will always be around, just as other OS' will be, however there will be little or no interest in name or version. Instead developers are constantly going to tweak their OS.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: The end of Windows (5/13/2015 4:28:08 AM)

Better take a closer look at Windows and Windows of the future. Now they are planning a "subscription" rate for new Windows after Windows 10. I knew it was too good to be true.

milkweg -> RE: The end of Windows (5/13/2015 6:32:56 AM)

Yea, that is what I figured will happen. Ten will be last stand alone version and after that it will be rent-ware, bye-bye Microsoft, the fun times ends here for me. I won't be around much longer anyway.

Gilmer -> RE: The end of Windows (5/13/2015 10:12:28 PM)

They suck.

rhondabrwn -> RE: The end of Windows (5/14/2015 1:56:10 AM)

When I heard "free" Windows X, I assumed it was a strategy forced on Microsoft to clean up their mess and get back to a unified customer base by making an offer that was too good to pass up. I didn't for a minute think that there wouldn't be charges down the road for every incremental package of improvements. They are just trying to follow Apple's strategy.

I'm not too distressed by the possibility of relatively painless periodic updates vs an expensive "new" OS every three years for big bucks (not to mention dicey upgrades that might require you to reload all of your software).

TANSTAAFL [:D]

I knew windoze was a flash in the pan!

...just give me a moment to brush up on my config.sys & autoexec.bat skills.

...hmmm, or is time to brush up on my Prodos skills and go back to a real computer?

...or in a complete emergency, I still have OS/2 around here somewhere!

...but then again, I could just keep plugging along on XP.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: The end of Windows (5/14/2015 5:41:49 AM)

Yeah as long as you stay offline with XP it still works just fine, but Matrixgames is going to upgrade someday and force us all to upgrade to a new OS. That's the sad part. Everybody has to stay up with the Jones and forget about their other neighbors.

It was XCOM Enemy Unknown that finally pushed me into upgrading to Windows 7, although in retrospect it was entirely worth it for that one game.

XP will continue to run but there are no updates which means that viruses and backdoor exploits that are found now will not longer be closed so every day the chance of something horrible happening to your XP machine increases and the risk of a hacker stealing your personal data or taking over your machine. Our technical director insisted our XP machines were taken off the network. Basically use XP at your own risk :)

aaatoysandmore -> RE: The end of Windows (5/14/2015 3:50:29 PM)

I'm not sure I will update past Vista for gaming now. I'll have two separate computers. One for online and one for games.

XP runs the majority of my games just fine I see no reason to update really from that. I only went to Vista because of my job.

Vista will become my online computer till it pukes out and then I might upgrade to the lowest common denominator just to check email and forums and stuff like that. It's just not worth it to pay out that kind of money just for some text chatting and odds and ends.

I haven't found anything I use online yet that really requires Vista but because they no longer support XP I'm pretty much stuck in the treadmill climb of OS's if I want to stay online. It's surely not for gaming though.

How much longer do you think I/We have for Vista to still run Matrixgames Iain?

AbwehrX -> RE: The end of Windows (5/14/2015 7:50:04 PM)

I use XP for gaming and Linux on a USB drive for the net. All my saves & downloads go onto a 1.9TB external. I dont see any need to change the OS and I will never use Win 8 or 10 or Vista for anything. Win 7 would be ok when I buy a new drive if I felt like experimenting.

VPaulus -> RE: The end of Windows (5/14/2015 9:32:33 PM)

Well, the newer Windows (7,8 and 10) are better optimized than XP, specially if you are running it on newer hardware (after 2010).
IMO, Vista is an exception. It's the worst Windows ever released by Microsoft. Even worst than ME. :P

Runs great for me I don't see what the problem is unless you're speaking from a programming side. It's fast and reliable and I've never had any blue screens of death (few crashes but those were actual game issues not Vista) I find more older games run on Vista than Win7 from the time I did have access to Win 7. So I really don't see the problem.

Iron Duke -> RE: The end of Windows (5/15/2015 9:26:02 AM)

7 versions of windows 10[X(]

Windows 10 Home: Aimed at home users on PCs, tablets and 2-in-1 tablet/laptop hybrid devices
Windows 10 Mobile: The smartphones and small tablet optimised version
Windows 10 Pro: This version has all the features of Windows 10 Home, but extra features for small businesses
Windows 10 Enterprise: Aimed at medium and large size businesses.
Windows 10 Education: For school staff, administrators, teachers and students.
Windows 10 IoT Core: Created for devices with small footprints like gateways.
Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise: For businesses using Windows on smartphones and small tablets.

even with a free upgrade from 7,8 and 8.1 think i'll stick with 7 for as long as possible

Any issues Vista has on the end-user side are probably papered-over nowadays by hardware vastly in excess of requirements and the relative simplicity of the software used by a layperson, but it looks really ugly to anyone on the development or support end of the userbase.

Right. [:)]
But even as an user I found it painful, to say the least. Even disabling all the nuisances like Search Indexing, Superfetch, UAC, etc., it still felt like a clunky OS.

JosephM -> RE: The end of Windows (5/15/2015 11:31:36 AM)

Hello All,

Well, it is all still speculation so far, but Paulo and I have been discussing it. 10 will be the last proper OS (which is to say it is a hybrid of 7/8 anyway), then from then on they'll be just updating the OS rather than a full release. When I first read the article on BBC News, Microsoft said something like "Previously we got our engineers in a room and they spent 3 years working on a system, but times have moved on and now we spend ages always adding updates anyway, so from now on any new Windows will come as updates".

We also can't see then forcing people to subscribe to Windows (which isn't a guarantee that they won't), but if you think of all the manufacturers and all the retail sales, then it isn't really sensible to get people to subscribe to get an OS, as how would you do that when you buy a PC? Plus if they try that, someone will make an equivalent OS and cripple their market. BUT we do think that they'll charge more for various bits and pieces - Skype, Office, Dropbox, possibly Spartan etc - and make the money that way. Remember, Microsoft mostly make their money from Office, so charging for Windows is pointless.

JosephM -> RE: The end of Windows (5/15/2015 11:39:21 AM)

On the Vista/XP side, it is the old saying with Windows, the alternate OSs tend to be the "better" OSs, which is to say that from 98, they alternate between good and bad: 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10. I've tested the early builds of 10 and it seems easy to use, and I think 7 works very well. XP was great, but 7 has some great features without changing a lot. Vista was OK, but 7 is the equivalent of Vista+, so more streamlined. The issue with XP and what will be an issue with Vista is that over time the hardware will move on and that'll affect the OS. I've been on 7 since almost the release and never got into 8, but I think I'll buy a retail version of 10 so I always have a disc to get the base version.
