LeeChard -> Carrier Training (5/21/2015 1:24:23 PM)

I have a marine fighter squadron based on a CVE set for general training. Does anybody
have an idea how long it takes to get from carrier capable to carrier trained?

bush -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 1:36:50 PM)

About 3 months.

dr.hal -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 1:38:43 PM)

Yes 90 days (turns) and they do NOT have to be consecutive, they are cumulative.

HansBolter -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 1:51:50 PM)

And you don't need to be in training mode to accomplish it.

They become carrier trained by conducting flight ops.

Don't worry over the penalty for using a non-carrier trained squadron.

No one has ever reported drastic consequences for doing so.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 2:06:41 PM)

I like to embark the Marine squadrons every time I have to refit the carriers and/ or I know I won't be conducting offensives

In my current game I have, so far, trained 4 or 5 squadrons

bush -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 4:10:07 PM)

Jorge,

Nice tip!

Yes, but as Hans stated, it just does not matter. You are really only doing it for historical flava as the penalty is virtually non-existent.

dr.hal -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 4:20:01 PM)

The lack of a substantial penalty (aircraft losses) is unfortunate as it takes a lot to train for a CV landing let alone a take off. The penalty should be a lot more.... But then again, if the penalty for losses in training accidents were realistic across the board, there would be a heck of a lot more losses during the game on all sides. I believe that the US lost more pilots in accidents than in combat throughout all of WW2.

LeeChard -> RE: Carrier Training (5/21/2015 4:21:28 PM)

Thanks everybody for the answer and the extra info.
Very helpful!

The US kept track of such things. In the US the individual pilot had some intrinsic value as a human being. Imperial Japan considered a dead pilot (in training) just a waste of the Emperor's money. Probably sent a bill to the deceased's family for the airplane he wrecked.

When we were play testing ops losses were closer to reality at one point, but the complaints were just too much and they were toned down.

As it is early yet (February 1943) I've taken the VR squadrons off of the CVEs that come with them and parked them on land and have them train. Now that I have some CVEs I'm loading Marine squadrons from the West Coast and Hawaii using them as CAP (won't do much against an escorted attack but might be good against patrols (the float plane equipped subs seem to be different than actual use) and long range bomber attacks) and search - I think they have found the odd submarine in the shipping lanes. Goal is to get all of the Marine squadrons carrier capable in case I need them some day.

Maybe make it an optional switch in the future? Historical pilot accident losses switch? If the code is still there of course.

Heh, yeah they were pretty brutal there for a while. I recall once I lost 14 of 18 transferring near max range to a carrier from Pearl...

LOL, if we had put a switch in for something like that, can you imagine the list of new switch request we'd have gotten....

What's wrong with more options and switches? A lot of computer games have them. Nothing wrong with providing alternatives, especially if it's fairly easy to code.

jmalter -> RE: Carrier Training (6/2/2015 2:27:00 AM)

Options & switches - we've already got a few!

I'll agree that training-accident losses to both airframes & pilots are severely under-represented in the game - learning to fly high-performance combat aircraft is a messy process.

packerpete -> RE: Carrier Training (6/6/2015 2:27:38 PM)

Count me in as one of the probably few players that would like to see this as an option. Could it be released like the Babes aircraft data or other some such method?[&:][&:]

crsutton -> RE: Carrier Training (6/6/2015 8:20:34 PM)

Really not much demand for it. I would not hold my breath waiting for it.

packerpete -> RE: Carrier Training (6/7/2015 1:43:45 PM)

I hear ya but me being a realism guy I had to ask. I have problems believing that it takes 90 days for a Marine squadron to become carrier trained and then no real penalty is accrued for using them before they are ready. I also wanted the realistic attrition to more accurately reflect what was going on in the Guadalcanal campaign.

I remember that. It was quite the uproar.
