wodin -> Petition for Combined Arms (5/22/2015 10:45:41 AM)

Please post in the thread if you feel Combined Arms is still worth carrying on with and completed. Erik has posted he is going to ask Ludo whether to drop the game altogether, though he said it would be a shame due to all the work already gone into it, which does sound promising.

For me the WEGO mechanic makes it very appealing. Combined Arms and Close Assault where the two games that caught my attention and brought me over here. Be very sad to see both never achieve release.

So,

I Wodin AKA Jason Rimmer here by declare I want to see Combined Arms completed and not dropped altogether.

Alchenar -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/22/2015 12:03:30 PM)

The screenshots on the game page make it look like it's from 1994, that's terrible even by wargame standards.

vonRocko -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/22/2015 12:05:21 PM)

I second the motion! But I worry about "getting it out in some form". Either finish it right or don't bother.

Rimmer is Viking. In England they are mainly found around Southport area just north of Liverpool. Most likely settled around Formby. Not overly keen on the name...but I can live with it. As for school...was never mentioned..at all. Well before Red Dwarf anyway.

As for the screenshots and the graphics I'm sure can easy be improved to say TOAW3 standard. Anyway its not the graphics why it should be finished but the gameplay description.

I have been looking forward to this title for years. Sadly, I mean that literally. Not sure if this will do any good, but what have I got to lose? Count me in.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/22/2015 10:09:55 PM)

i want them to get it out - if its unfinished cant they just make it freely available and open source for someone able to finish? if otherwise it is just going to be buried and refused to all then what is there to lose by making it available and the means for it to be finished by others if they want?

Well I'll throw in a mighty +1 just to help you out on your cause.

Even though I prolly won't buy the game even if it does go through, I figure you're on the right track.

Rimmer is Viking.

Really ? It sounds more like an occupation based surname.

If you look artound the net you will see it does have Viking links and DNA testing has been done I believe. Remember the Normans where Viking descendants.

If you look further down on the page you linked to you'll see posts about Vikings and the name Rimmer.

The name could be either a musician or a leather worker or to do with settling near Martin Mere. Either way it came in with the Viking settlers.

"The name is Nordic and was thought to have been brought over by the Vikings when they departed Ireland. "People say we are interbred but four Viking families landed on the West Lancashire coast," Gladys stresses."

Googling that could turn up some NSFW results. Much like when James May (also of TopGear fame) searched the internet for plans for a glider he wanted to build called the "Swallow" [:'(]

wodin is saying his dad might be yours in other words as Vikings got around at bit[:D][;)]

Fred98 -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/24/2015 11:43:46 PM)

I have not bought a wargame since March 2011.

I hate that isometric quasi 3D view of recent wargames and I hate that toy soldier look of recent wargames.

I have not played a turn of any wargame for over a year.

If Combined Arms was released I would get it and play PBEM turns.

Sounds like the best solution if it can't be completed by the author. I remember one of Battlefronts games went that way.

You are all assuming that a Turkey can be made into a Golden Goose.

Best wishes,
Steve

Just wondering does anyone know why it is unfinished? Buggy? Slow? Bad AI?

jamespcrowley -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/26/2015 12:29:12 PM)

I would love to see this released, especially as so much work seemed to have been spent on it.

One wonders why it was never finished. My guess is that designing the AI proved problematic but who knows.

Petition or not, I'm not wildly optimistic as to the outcome.

shunwick -> RE: Petition for Combined Arms (5/26/2015 2:29:34 PM)

It was a hugely ambitious project and cutting-edge innovative. A brilliant idea.

But the AI, completely central to the whole WEGO system, requires a considerable investment in time and expertise to create. It was, I assume, beyond the capabilities of the developer. It might even be, at this time, completely beyond the capabilities of AI programming in general.

I don't think anyone fully realized just how innovative this title was. It is a great sadness that it could not be pulled off despite the valiant effort to try.

But such is life.

Best wishes,
Steve

OK, I have to confess that I don't understand why AI is so central for a WEGO system--I would think that each player would give commands to their units, and the orders would be executed simultaneously--where does the AI bit come in?

Obviously, I understand what you mean if you are talking about one-player vs the AI rather than multiplayer...

It was the way it was designed. Someone, many years ago now, asked if the game could be released without an AI. Ludo explained how the AI in the game was central to how the WEGO system worked and removing it would essentially leave no game.

If you would like to delve into the Combined Arms forum you should be able to dig up that post somewhere around 2005-2008 if I remember correctly. The whole forum makes for interesting reading especially if you go to 2000 and move through the years.

Best wishes,
Steve
