jmalter -> river crossing - shock attack (5/23/2015 9:22:15 AM)

After waiting some several months for the IJ AI (proud conquerors of Singapore) to assemble & assault Pegu, I gathered enough stuff to take the offensive. Recon showed ~24 IJ LCU in hex 56,54 - I sent my 1st echelon (5 divs & some light armor) to move east 1 hex, then SW to the objective. As they entered, IJ did a Bombardment, their attacker/defender AV ration was ~ 2250/2500.

According to this thread http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3641266&mpage=1, I now have the necessary >30% of enemy AV to prevent a shock attack from occurring, as my 2nd echelon moves SE from Pegu across the river.

Oops, sure enough, the 2nd echelon crosses & does a shock attack, incurring massive casualties, suffered mostly by the leading Chinese corps. (Sorry guys, but that's why you were given the point position.) According to this subsequently-discovered thread: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3644171&mpage=1, my 2nd echelon was too large, its AV should have been <33% of the value of my units already present in the hex.

Another thing, my BombTFs won't attack this non-base hex, despite near-constant aerial recon. The cruisers arrive at night, don't attack, & wait 'til the following day to return to Rangoon. Is there a prohibition against BombTFs targeting a non-base hex?

Often a lot of confusion about river crossings. It sounds to me like your second assault was across a different hex side than your first? If so, that is why it shock attacked. Meeting the defenders 1/3 AV requirement was probably met as you said, but by not sending your 2nd wave across the same hex side you triggered a new shock attack. Hope this helps.

What he said. To avoid subsequent shock attacks, you must have a force > 1/3 the defenders' AV already in the hex and which crossed the same hex side.

thx, I missed that it had to be through the same hexside. Fortunately, 5th the Chinese Corps suffered 80% of its casualties as disablements, but still it will be 60 days at least before they're back to what they were.

Thanks from me, too, this explains a similar blunder I made in my game, also with the Chinese.
