Huw Jones -> U2VS Aircraft (5/24/2015 4:04:42 PM)

I am using Beta 3.

I have previously put some of these aircraft into my bomber airbases if there if there is a small amount of aircraft capacity to fill up.

They don't seem to bombing units anymore in bomb units mode or ground support, always showing 0% used.

Has something changed I am pretty sure they went out on the above missions before?

You are remembering to switch to night mode, yes?

Huw Jones -> RE: U2VS Aircraft (5/24/2015 4:31:45 PM)

Do they only fight at night, I was wondering if that was the case, as they are just old biplanes?

They are night aircraft. You have to change modes.

ok thanks.

Maybe Obsolete at this time.

But I remember that the Old Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers, seriously damaged the Bismark steering early in the war, helping lead to her scuttling.

Not to mention Taranto and if the stories are right the Japanese got the idea for PH from this attack.

The Swordfish was still operational in 1945, but not as a torpedo bomber.

Mehring -> RE: U2VS Aircraft (5/25/2015 10:13:11 AM)

Not obsolete, very useful but short range, so if their bases are far behind lines, they won't reach target. They will bomb in day time unless set to night missions. To use at night both the units and bombing mode must be set to night.

When they come on, they are arriving in NIGHT MODE.

So you need to remember to reset them to day, presuming you want them in that mode.

Personally I think they should arrive in day mode, all aircraft should, then you only need to remember the ones you wish to switch to night.

I don't know what they were used for in real live but I suspect scenario designers got it right as night TacB. If so they should arrive as they do now, in night mode. Anyway they are much to fragile for day use.

The U2 as a wider series were used a lot for recon and in supplying the partisan war.

The bombers were harrassment weapons. A typical tactic was to cut the engine, fly as a glider over a German rear area concentration (all at night), and drop grenades or small bombs. So chance of somebody getting killed was low but the whole camp then spends the rest of the night awake and worried about a partisan attack. This is pretty well modelled in the game as they cause quite a lot of disruptions (which converts to fatigue).

They had one huge advantage over German fighters by being so slow. They could fly below the stall speed of German fighters which made it hard to stay in contact and hunt them down, but they were very vulnerable if spotted at a distance as the fighter could just line up its angle of attack.

in game, I use them a lot from late 1941 to 1943 on the quieter fronts. They take little supply, and add to the slow attrition of the axis, the Finns are a good target for this as they have such a manpower shortage. I move the production factories every now and then so the pools don't fill up too much.

After my game with Mehring, I now also build U-2 Rcn regiments. They do a good job supplementing the long range recon aircraft that are in limited supply. U-2 transports can also run some short range partisan supply missions.
