What your opponent said is not quite true - there is one dot base on the north shore of NG, west of Hollandia IIRC. You do not have enough time in this scenario to build large enough air bases for the heavy bombers to operate at range, so don't waste your time and troops trying. You can interdict Truk from the northern Marshalls, although it is long range for your HB. Ponape would be useful, but not essential. Expeditions like this are what I was hinting at when I said my taking Pagan for the air cover it could offer led to me running out of time to take Saipan. Note that most of your amphib ships have to land the first big invasion (Guam, Tinian, or Saipan), then return all the way to PH and load the next big invasion. LSTs in particular are very slow making the transit, and you get very few cargo ships to haul stuff closer for the LSTs to pick up. Eniwetok should be your key base for now, but you need lots of support ships to handle all the ships needing ammo and repairs. That dot base on NG is useful as a place to station an AV or AVP or AVD so you can operate some Catalinas to search the seas SE of Pelelieu/Babeldaob.
