nardiajn -> Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/25/2015 2:42:45 PM)

Hello all -
well my first ever AAR, so bear with me...
of course suggestions are welcome.

First off my opponent:
Joe S. from the great state of Illinois. I have played Joe twice already, in Dababs Guadalcanal and had my butt handed to me before November. I feel Joe is very patient and very well versed on the mechanics of the game.
I felt like myself boxing Mike Tyson in his early days, KO'ed in round 1. (I still have my ears)

We choose this scenario as the Allies are loaded and it might give me a chance.
In addition we are about a 10 days into the campaign. (sorry we didnt start off on day 1)

boy, what a bevy of ships/air and supply, I better not lose or I will have to go back to the Avalon Hill games.. haha.

My early goals:

1) Be patient !
2) Pound his airfields (I still have nightmares on his Betties pummeling me in Guadalcanal. Truk and Ponape are first.
3) Take Wake
4) Build an air base at Manus, now changed my mind and will attempt it at Hollandia
5) Sub patrols !!! Key for me to disrupt his shipping lanes.. The allied version of a wolfpack will be around Babeldob/Pelilu as he probably will use waypoints.
6) Move infantry and supplies to Tarawa Majuro and stage there before I hit Pagan and Tinian
7) Disrupt his supply ships is probably key to the game.

Brief update as we are at May 30.
I am pounding the heck out of Truk with B-24s/and Panape
I have CV TF attempting to 'sneak' past Truk and get into range of Babeldob area and CV TF attempting to get to Tinian to smash his air.

Wake being bombarded by BBs/CAs
DD Hancock sunk by a blasted sub...(rats !)

Screen shots will follow
and thanks for reading :)

Welcome to the wacky world of WITP/AE!

Have you played this scenario against the AI? I am guessing 'not' because if you did you would not be quite so fearful of the paper tiger of the Japanese air threat. Keep your CV TFs together and the CAP will decimate attackers. The most the AI managed against me was one aerial torpedo hit on a CVL.

Play it like Spruance did - defensive at first until the enemy bombers were neutered, then start offensive strikes. If you strike too soon you divide your fighters that you need for CAP.

I hope you started your invasion forces going right away - you need every day of this scenario to take the three islands with the major VPs. I went for the low-hanging fruit at Pagan to give me a base for LBA to help with CAP and suppression of airfields. It turned out to be a mistake - I did not have time to get in all three major island invasions. I was misled by the reinforcement queue showing ship arrivals long after the actual scenario end date.

You have lots of Fletcher DDs - use them to make ASW TFs to move ahead of you invasion forces and CVs. I use 3 ships per ASW TF so that if one uses more than half its depth charges I can detach it to go replenish while the other two continue the hunt.

Good luck!

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/25/2015 11:29:33 PM)

May 31 turn...
still positioning for my attacks..
Truk is being bombed from B24 and CV TF...
but CVs will alter course to slide south and skirt Truk to support amphib landing at Hollandia
Wake needs to become a supply base for me..
after that.. all efforts will be on the islands of Guam/Tinian/Saipan

his subs keep trying to take on me DEs...good for me
not sure when his CVs arrive..but I need to be ready.

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/25/2015 11:47:05 PM)

Broad hint - IJN CVs (and the whole damn fleet) arrive in June. Be sure your CVs have their sorties replenished! Leave ground bombing to LBA for now.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/27/2015 1:00:02 AM)

June 2
The Allies advance continue...
(cue up theme song from McHales Navy)
well I had a bombardment of Truk with 4 BBs/4 CAs and a few DDs...lots of damage...however,
hits on my BBs and a CA.. I had a bombard minimum 3 and 4 max react...replay showed them right on Truk (badness)
no idea why that happened. (wanna win a game, play me haha)

I took Wake (yawn) but I see it as a staging ground.. I can use different directions when I mass my attacks against Saipan,Guam, Tinian and Pagan..
I sunk one transport west of Guam... DEs pummeled a sub lurking near Eniwetok...

Jap TF CL/DD east of Pelilu...hmmm where is he going with this one ?

Not sure what you mean by "right on Truk" but I am guessing you thought the "3" you set was 3 hexes? The "bombard minimum" is the closest distance in thousands of yards that your TF will approach the target, so it will always show as being in the same hex during the bombardment. Much too close for the guns of a big fortress like Truk. Try standing off 12,000 yards and you will not be hit badly.

The "react" setting is the maximum number of hexes that your TF will dash at full speed to catch a detected enemy or to escape from danger. WARNING: CVs do not always heed their react setting orders, and will often steam toward the enemy rather than stay at the strike distance you want! This is why you need fast BBs with your carriers.

Too bad you got your BBs shot up - you need them for covering your CVs and for the invasion bombardments.

The CL/DD TF sounds like a raiding one, out to get your ASW TFs or weakly escorted merchants. It could also be bait to get you to send a SCTF to intercept within range of his Nells and Bettys.

Hello all who follow..
and thanks to BBfanboy for the explanation, its appreciated.

June 3... IJN loses another sub near Wake.. my DDs captains will get a case of Vat69 !
I lost a AGC, also near wake to sub attack (blast the IJN crew) next time I will offer some American cigarettes in an effort to bribe them... they should be on the take after breathing diesel for a few months...

I have a torp hit and some other damage on BBs from your Judy and Jills, probably from Guam or Saipan as I am attempting to bombard..(12 K this time...thanks for the advice)

Good day all -
now its time to cue up the old Victory at Sea for this turn (who remembers that series, or am I dating myself) haha

well the good guys luck out..
Liberators sack ARD at Truk
SS Pogey sinks ACM
and I lucked out (Finally) during my disaster on a bombard of Tinian... I broke off some BBs/CL and DDs to stay in the neighborhood and try to bombard Tinian
it worked... lots of damage.. but time to scoot before he bags me again with Jills and Judys.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/31/2015 5:37:54 PM)

hello my AAR followers
not much to report
other than I would like to thank my opponent.
I landed at Hollandia in my attempt to build an airfield
Joe (my opponent) told me
all the bases on New Guinea have had the dots removed, so you cant build them up as bases
gotta appreciate an opponent like that :)
so, scratch that idea ...maybe Panapae will be built.
(goal is to set a base where I can use my heavy bombers to hit the islands for my main attack..
Guam, Saipan, Tinian)
thats all to report...

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (5/31/2015 9:06:16 PM)

What your opponent said is not quite true - there is one dot base on the north shore of NG, west of Hollandia IIRC. You do not have enough time in this scenario to build large enough air bases for the heavy bombers to operate at range, so don't waste your time and troops trying.

You can interdict Truk from the northern Marshalls, although it is long range for your HB. Ponape would be useful, but not essential. Expeditions like this are what I was hinting at when I said my taking Pagan for the air cover it could offer led to me running out of time to take Saipan. Note that most of your amphib ships have to land the first big invasion (Guam, Tinian, or Saipan), then return all the way to PH and load the next big invasion. LSTs in particular are very slow making the transit, and you get very few cargo ships to haul stuff closer for the LSTs to pick up. Eniwetok should be your key base for now, but you need lots of support ships to handle all the ships needing ammo and repairs.

That dot base on NG is useful as a place to station an AV or AVP or AVD so you can operate some Catalinas to search the seas SE of Pelelieu/Babeldaob.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/3/2015 11:14:03 PM)

hello gents -
well, lets see what song I can queue up for you.. (from the old movie "the warriors"
'Warriors, come out and play ayyyyy' (lets see if anyone remembers that 'classic' haha
well a few screen shots for you..
first the planed attack on Pagan... need to pound his airfields...and keep on lookout for his CV TFs....
however, my amphib is soooo slow on the move to Pagan..need to clear that area first
hasnt been much action... well, I sunk another 2 subs..still bombing Truk as my
foolish plan on landing at Hollandia was a bust.. dang !!!!... now moving back to land at Ponape...
better search radius...(I think)
his CVs are active (as my opponent and I do mention things)

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/4/2015 3:17:01 AM)

Keep in mind that the Pagan area is also in range of TBs operating from Iwo Jima.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/4/2015 10:57:55 PM)

hello my faithful followers....
next turn.. still not a ton of action..
his CVs are out there and I bombed the heck out of Pagan from my CV TFs...
one of his subs put two fish into my BB (drats !)

see next post for his sub laying fish into the BB

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/14/2015 12:57:07 AM)

hello my faithful followers

do to real life work issues, a few days passed before the next turn
still not much to report..I plan on hitting Tinian in the next few turns
with bombardment/surface TF, supported by my CVs and a big amphib force
lets see if that happens smoothly
reading other AAR, I am nervous, but hey..its a game :)

last turn my CVs pilots sank some supply ships trying to reinforce Guam...andd had a group of Judys mauled by my cap.
also sunk another sub who was prowling around Eniwetok....

keeping my fingers crossed
now time for some wine :) (well another glass or two) [:D]

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/15/2015 11:58:31 PM)

hello followers:

still not a lot to report.. however, in the next turn or two all hell may break loose
Tinian is being bombed, my CVs have air coverage for an impending attack by IJN CV TF... or so I think..
intel level shows 9 on CVs... we shall see...
I sunk another sub near Eniwetok, DEs/DDs make ASW efficient! I also torpedoed an IJN DD prowling in my read areas.

I am not sure how long to bombard Tinian...but I will find out soon...
just need to land and unload my 'boys'

[image]local://upfiles/43961/5E7856879C924DA3B5DA10FF053D3326.jpg[/image]

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/16/2015 1:10:05 AM)

Regardless of preliminary bombardments, be sure to include BBs, or at the very least, CAs in each of your landing TFs. These will suppress the fire from the forts during the offload and soak up a lot of the shots aimed at your ships.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/18/2015 11:29:51 PM)

Hello followers
well it was a matter of time before the good old "Red, White, and Blue" squared off against the meatball flag of
Japan...
Queue up the song from Rocky Three (Eye of the Tiger)
Showdown was at Tinian... I had plenty of carriers and I was hoping would provide air cover for my invasion force, but, no such
luck..
His carrier task force (see pic next panel) was spotted but my flyboys turned in a poor performance and not only didnt provide the air coverage, but didnt launch against his CVs (10 hexes away).. they did sink a sub patrol (whoopie :))

I have peeled back my invasion force to a certain extent and have moved my carriers a little closer..
I feel he has moved his planes off the Marianas ... and I should (wish me luck) hit his TFs hard and heavy.

Any one who in the future plays my opponent, be warned... hes good.
lucky for me, this is a game [:'(]

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/18/2015 11:32:38 PM)

pic time (previous panel, shows my combat report, drats that it didnt display in text format)
and the combat report was scary as the bride of Frankenstein :)

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/19/2015 3:30:02 AM)

Were you trying for the 10 hex distance?? Even if some of your planes can make that far at max range, that is much too far for carrying ordinance.
You have overwhelming numbers of planes relative to his forces and should not fear getting within his strike range. As in the real "Turkey Shoot", your CAP should massacre most of the attackers and AA will take down almost all the rest. Those that get through are not the aces of 1942, but half trained and with little experience. They will miss much more than hit.

But before you do move in, check the number of sorties you have left. You have been frittering them away on ground attacks and such so you may not be able to put together a full strike now when it is critical to do so.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/20/2015 11:44:06 AM)

Hello again to all who follow..
lucky me didnt play my turn last night (had a beer too many :) )
but... not much action...
I had a sub put a fish into CV Junyo east of Tinian...hope it stuck his rudders...
for BBfanboy, yes, I was trying to hit him at 10 hexes...but as I am learning.. I didnt know carrying ordinance made a difference..keep up the tips, I do take notes.
sending a few of my CVs back to port to refuel and get the sorties back up to full strength.

my opponent (I love this game and players, as I do get advice) but.. he stated I needed to set LRCAP at a destination in order to have air cover.. doh...

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/20/2015 2:34:52 PM)

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh but I had been dropping hints that his fleet was going to show up in June and you needed to get your carriers fully ready. In this scenario bombing ground troops is a diversion from the main job of protecting the landings.

IRL the Japanese tried to trick Spruance into leaving the landing area to chase their carriers into the Philippine Sea where they could use the LBA as well as carrier aircraft to try and cripple Fifth fleet, then send in their massive fleet of surface combat ships. Spruance recognized the landings were more important than the IJN CVs (Halsey likely would have taken the bait) and his CV CAP ate up the Japanese aircraft that were at extreme range to strike at the Marianas. Only when it was clear they had shot their bolt and CVE aircraft could handle air cover did Spruance move to strike the Japanese. You should follow a similar strategy.

I will give another hint because IRL Spruance would have had pretty good intel on the Japanese naval ships available to oppose him: they are bringing many more BBs and CAs than you have. Keep your CVs away from them and hit them with air strikes before considering sending in your BBs. I would keep my fast BBs with my CVs until his ships have been hit hard. Do not use the fast BBs for bombardments at this time.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/22/2015 12:30:35 AM)

Hello again -

quiet turn for the most part.. .I had a sub put 2 more fish into CV Junyo West of Tinian.. one for the good guys..:)
but my sub sunk by his escorts.. Capt. will get a posthumous medal for his service.

landings at Tinian continue, while I also landed at Pagan and Ponape...
some CVs are heading to port to rearm.

to my friend BBfanboy, keep those comments coming. I am thankful for the advice. I will be more patient and supply coverage for my landings. Still somewhat confused by why my cap didnt cover the landings from 2 turns ago.
However, I did set my LCAP to Tinian and Pagan.. hopefully thats the way to cover landings.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/23/2015 11:45:37 AM)

bad day at the office...
while I had a few CVs lurking near Tinian to provide air cover ... a few other went to various ports to refuel/re-arm.
with that being said, landings at Panape, Pagan and Tinian continued.
my amphib TF at Panape encountered a IJN CA but that was fine and dandy as my supporting ships took care of her.
Pagan landings un-opposed.
now the bad news, Tinian were once again intercepted by a slew of IJN CVs and her planes.. chewed me up pretty well, although I unloaded most troops.. my LRCAP did intercept, but with various altitudes of 15k - 10k not as well as I needed.

he has another CV TF heading East towards PH, as a amphib force encountered that with decent results, BBs supporting the amphib..
while a bad day at the office, I am keeping firm and not pursuing his fleet just yet, as I need those islands :)
lets see what today brings

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/25/2015 9:07:24 PM)

hello again my faithful followers :)

finally a stroke of luck for the good guys.
still landing at Tinian, but this time my CV TFs LRCAP participated in the turkey shoot.
to quote my friend and opponent.
" I sent a couple squadrons on short range to hit your landing at Tinian, and your Hellcats had them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I lost nearly 50 fighters (and several bombers) and barely scratched your planes. I did get a hit on a CVE Sangamon"

CVE is doing ok, pulling her back for a quick (I hope repair) but.. glad I finally caused him a headache or two.

He still has a CV TF behind my lines (near midway) but I am being patient as he HAS to return to his supply
my search planes have him, just need to get my escorts and dive bombers close enough.
Corsairs, might be moving to one of my CVEs... have a thing for Corsairs, as I grew up watching Black Sheep Squadron..
those were the days...

BBfanboy -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/26/2015 2:58:27 AM)

Check those Corsairs to see if the squadron is "carrier capable". The first Corsair model is land only.

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (6/30/2015 12:00:46 AM)

hello followers
been a few days to post..
however, summer weekends are tough :)

still landing at Tinian and Pagan...
not sure how long to use my troops in bombard mode.. I figure at least 2 weeks ?
my CVs are still supporting the landings

he has a CV TF still lurking (currently near Wake) but I plan on attempting to intercept on his way back.
he must take the Northern route.

my CV sorties are at least 90% full.... lots of repairs as he has intercepted some amphib TFs coming from PH, with my DD escorts... hate guerrilla warfare :(

nardiajn -> RE: Scenario 11 Marianas. Jersey Boy vs Fighting Illini (7/1/2015 11:59:34 PM)

hello fans (or curious followers)
well, still unloading at Tinian... my amphib TF got lit up by the bad guys...hopefully they had too much saki.
but my LRCAP from my CVS also chewed up his airgroups... thankfully.

as you can see from the pic.. the next few turns can prove interesting...
my CV TFs, have plenty of sorties left... and CAP is at 30, LRCAP is same (for some CVs) and rest is escort.
wish me luck
my TFs are sill offloading and are dead meat.
lets hope for horrible weather.
