Chromey -> splitting up ur men (6/8/2015 8:20:25 AM)

Ussually a good idea to brake 600+ regiments into 2 smallers ones since the game says any units past 350 doesnt contribute to firing line.

i never have, but then again never needed to so far tbh

I believe in an earlier post (not sure which thread) staff indicated the optimum level would be 350. If over 350 you get no extra fire benefit but because of the extra crowding you may suffer higher losses.

I rarely had split units but I'm playing with it a little bit now especially since the patch removed the morale loss for splitting.

The other reason for splitting is to be able to extend your line so to speak. In the case of cavalry units you now have two instead of one to be your eyes, scout for enemy and/or hold a victory hex.

Each unit has a combat frontage and splitting them cuts it exactly in half. I still believe there should be some kind of penalty for doing it.

The nicer touch would be no significant penalty as long as the split units stayed within two hexes of each other. Reality was that a regiment always deployed into two rank line at took up whatever frontage that required. That frontage was 28 inches per man which works out to be about 40 yards for 100 men in two rank line. Considering a hex in the game is 75 yards two full strength companies would normally occupy a single hex. A 400 man regiment which was about the average after the first year of the war would normally occupy a 160 yard frontage which is more than two hexes in the game. A 700 man regiment like the ones in 1st Manassas would require four hex frontage, 280 yards, to fully deploy into two rank line. However, they soon found that in the broken terrain of most American battlefields this was to long a line to control so they never tried to maintain the full strength regiments like used in Napoleonic wars.

Some of this "extended" line is handled through the ZOC's projected by the unit. The ideal would be to have actual company size units that get bonuses for maintaining a continuous line with the rest of their regiment companies like the game "Devils Den" but that would work the player to death moving all those sub units and trying to keep them together.

I may be mistaken, but I think there IS sort of a penalty when a regiment is split. It is incurred when the unit attacks. Since the formula for the base strength is > strength*Attack roll / 9 <, the more "effective" men you have the more powerful your attack will be. For example, in the starter scenario, the 49th Pa. has 700 men. Attacking with 700 men produces an "effective" strength of 537 (frontage restriction). If you were to split the 49th Pa, the initial strength calculation would use 350 men, so you would start with a less powerful attack. However on defense you will not incur the 5% penalty for having more than 350 men. So, to me more men will have a more powerful attack and 350 or less will suffer less casualties. Just my .02$
