FoxZz -> How does recon work in Comand ? (6/16/2015 1:40:34 AM)

Hi all,

I was wondering how creating a recon mission. I tried with a plane fitted with a recon pod, but it doesn't seem to work, even when just above the target and with the pod in active mod.

How is it supposed to work ?

Thanks :)

What are you trying to recon and with what are you trying to do it? Be as specific as possible.

what recon pod? What plane? What country? What terrain?

This is pretty vague.

I was using a Rafale M with an AEROS recon pod, I sended it near and above Bogey, and above landmass to find an airbase I knew the whereabouts.
I sended it both on a support mission and without mission. The pod didn't seemed to notice anything while teh eyes of the pilot did.

A savegame speaks more than a thousand words [8D]

Depending on the recon system, that might be because the information recorded in it isn't immediately available. For example, U-2 or SR-71 imagery wasn't available in real time back in the 60s. It had to be removed from the aircraft and processed first.

I didn't think this was modelled in-sim?

It's not, that's my point. It shouldn't need to be. In that case, a recce pod is just a loadout you select that effectively does nothing.

Its simple enough to test...run a plane over a ship at different altitudes and with/without a recon pod. I am sure it also depends on what is in the recon pod.

Recon assets have a better chance of detecting units on the ground. You'll find air defenses and undetected ground units. You won't get a/c counts at air bases, however.

Please provide a save. We really cannot investigate for any possible issue without being able to precisely replicate the situation.

Thanks!

Here is a test scenario I created, The recce pod detect land targets but no naval targets.

I can't post links on the forum, so PM me and I'll send it to you.

In some scenarios, what I do is set up areas that the aircraft has to fly over. When it does this, it triggers an Event that says you have completed the recon mission and you get points. (You could cheat and use the aircraft without the recon loadout, but I'm not sure why anyone would do that.)

Of course, if what you're looking for is mobile units, then you actually have to fly around until you detect them. But, of course, you can use a Detect Unit trigger for the Event and give the player points that way. (And, of course, if the recon plane gets shot down, you lose points.)

That's what I do with things like SR-71, old U-2 and RF-4 sorts of aircraft.

I'm not so sure that'd be how you'd use an aircraft like that, though. That'd be more a job for a low-flying sort of aircraft like an OA-10, or an aircraft with a synthetic aperture radar like the JSTARs or newer U-2 variants. In that case they'd be looking specifically for moving targets using a MTI radar mode.
