Warhorse -> PBEM weirdness (6/25/2015 8:21:36 PM)

Ok, so an opponent and myself try to start a PBEM, I start, enter password, send to him. He opens it, trys to enter password, it wants the password for my country?! If I open the save, it wants his password, as expected, anyone run into this before? Running ENH FR, scn is Horrors of War for ENH FR. I'm Nationalist, other guy is Republican.

Never played PBEM games myself. However the online game is fantastic. To get an online game running you do need to find out your real IP address and open a port from your router. So it does reguire some know-how.

You need to open TCP port 7002 on your router/firewall for the host. The person joining the game does not need to open ports but does need the real IP adress of the host (which can be found in the router settings).

Back in the day when computers used a dial up modems and there were no firewalls / routers it was simple. You just looked up your IP address from windows and gave that to your friend who then could join the game.

Just a thought .....

How are the two players toggled, y'know, in that screen everybody clicks through to get playing Right Now!. You might have to adjust that if you're using a human vs AI scen.

I'm not familiar with that scen, and too lazy to look right now.

I'm saving this.

I've never played online, but it does sound interesting. Alby, Krec and a few others always tout that flavor of the game.

Gotta try that sometime.

Thanks Riitaoja

Things that came to my mind after some thinking.

#1. The usual stuff: both players need to have the same version of the game and the same OOB set.
#2. When the game starts you need to select the "Play by Email" option not solitaire play.
#3. When saving an email game you need to use the savegame slots 3 - 12.
#4. You need to send all four savegame files to your opponent from the Email -folder. (e.g. email3.aux, email3.cmt, email3.dat, email3.rec)

Another possibility is that your opponent does not understand that he is meant to just enter his password and send the email save game files back to you. Maybe he is opening the save game file again and trying to play a turn without realising that?

Yet another remote but possible issue is that if you have the game installed in the C:\Program Files\... directory Windows might deside to deny write access to the save game files since that folder is protected. You might want to install the game to for example C:\Games\Steel Panthers World at war -folder instead.

Lastly it might just be an issue with that scenario? Maybe test other scenarios or even try a randomly generated battle and see if those work. Not really a PBEM expert myself though...

Here are some additional tips for SPWAW online games:

If you play a scenario or a battle with custom map you will need to make sure that both players have the exact same scenario or map file or it wont work.

You can also save an online game anytime you like but when you continue from a saved game you need to send the save game files to your opponent first. Online game saves are stored in the SAVE folder just like regular single player games and you can use any slot you want.

In the Preferences screen there is the option "Time per turn". With that option you can specify how much time your opponent has to make his moves before the turn automaticaly ends. I set this to the maximum of 2700 sec (or 45min) but if you do not like to wait too long for your opponent to finish his turns you can set it lower.

Hmm, don't know, picked the scenario, under PBEM, then it just askes for Nationalist PW, then it gets saved in 3-12.

JEB Davis -> RE: PBEM weirdness (7/1/2015 1:55:24 AM)

Sounds like it may be a normal part of setting up a pre-made scenario for PBEM. Maybe this document will shed light.

Chapter 4. Playing a Custom Scenario by PBEM

(can't attach it here, sent to Warhorse by PM)

Warhorse -> RE: PBEM weirdness (7/1/2015 8:43:58 PM)
