In the Winter offensive the Russian choose to attack the Fins. They also attacked the Germans around Leningrad, but the Germans were well prepared for the attacks, and repulsed the Russians, and actually took Novgorod, in a small counter offensive. After it was evident that the Russians would not launch a major offensive on the Eastern Front, the Germans took the opportunity to attack Sevastopol, in order to clear out the Crimea before the spring.
