Does Middle East run on Linux WINE? Yes!!

The above is a screenshot of the latest Middle East game engine EXE running on Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS with the default Linux WINE. Setup was straightforward: Go to the Ubuntu Software Center, download and install Linux WINE; then use winetricks to apply vcrun2008 (to fetch and install the needed mfc90.dll). No fuss, no muss.

I have not tested this extensively; I don't know yet that everything absolutely and positively works. But so far, so good! I have run the Middle East.exe frontend launcher, launched several scenarios. And from the Linux command line, launched and ran through an entire automated A/I test game. Display, sound, mouse, hot keys -- everything seems fine! [8D]

Is it possible that Middle East will run on WINE for Mac OS X? [X(] Maybe. We'll see!

Hope we can get a feedback on ME on Wine for Mac OS X soon! [:D]

Hi berto! Any update on ME running on Wine for Mac?

berto -> RE: Middle East on Linux WINE (8/13/2015 7:27:59 PM)

No, no update. We are busy attending to the main show -- running the game on Windows (all supported versions, not including XP, but even there it does and should work fine).

Linux and Mac support are incidental to the main show. I am having success on Linux. Haven't tried with Wine for Mac. Maybe, maybe not, but not any time soon, if ever. Sorry.

No worries. I can always run ME on Parallels if needed. Your screenshots on this website & on Facebook is driving me nuts waiting for the game!! [:'(]

Here is a screenshot of an ongoing automated crash test game:

There might be issues with the editors. But after 50+ automated test games without real issues, it is safe to say that the ME 1.01 game itself still runs fine on Linux WINE!

(Still can't answer in the affirmative about running the game on Wine for Mac, though. Sorry.)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Just one more screenshot, from the next in sequence automated crash test game:

(I have some extra time off work during the coming holiday season. We do have three different Mac systems here. Maybe I can find the time to investigate if CSME will play on Wine for Mac. Maybe.)

Yes, I'm playing Campaign Series: Middle East on Linux using Wine and it works fine in general. Sometimes I have crashes, but it happens not often

For ME 1.00, we did not do automated crash testing on Linux Wine. For ME 1.01, we are doing that, and will do so for all future ME updates and all future CS games.

In the current round of CS on Linux Wine crash tests, out of 70 scenarios tested so far (80 scenarios in the complete set), there has been just one crashed scenario, possibly related to audiere.dll -- the game sound system.

These automated crash tests have been running non-stop since Monday, so the game is getting a terrific workout.

I couldn't say whether ME 1.01 is more stable than ME 1.00 on Linux Wine. But it's doing very well for running on a non-native, not officially supported platform OS.

I count this a success.
