Housies -> What's you favorite tank in the game (7/31/2015 8:18:32 AM)

As the topic says, what's you favorite tank in the game and why?

I'll start with bringing some love to the Stuart tank. This light tank proved to be very usefull to me on maps with lot's of hedges as it can quickly manouvre through them. Secondly it was also very effective against a battlegroup with halftracks. However keep them out of sight when german panzers arrive...

I agree with the OP. My favorite tank in the game is the Stuart. It's mobility makes it a good vehicle to cover vast maps in little time, and it's good as a mobile bunker, holding key locations. If you can get a Stuart in the right position, it can take out the heavier tanks. Which is a good feeling when you realize mobility and maneuverability trumped armor and power.

Haven't done that yet, but it surely would be [&o]

Yeah the Stuart is pretty cool, it is fast, small and can take on most of what the Germans have.

In this game however my fav is the Crocodile, you can't go wrong with that killing machine as it eats up EVERYTHING. The long range of the flame gun and the medium power main cannon makes it an impressive weapon not to mention its somewhat heavy armor.

Least favorite is the Panzer IV, they suck pretty bad, bad aiming and paper thin armor, even enemy mortars target them!. I treat them as anti infantry mobile pill boxes, much like a stuart and to screen my main tank force.

Yesterday I got a lot of love from the Churchill mark V tank. It's incredibly usefull blowing enemy infantry out of hedges or buildings with it 90 mm HE rounds. Off course the crocodile can do the same with its flame thrower, but not from the distance as the Mark V can.

However don't try to use it as a anti tank weapon. You might be able to take one out but the Mark III is much better suited for this.

Didn't the Tiger tanks have a lot of mechanical problems? Even so, I wonder what the maintenance records were on all the tank models of the second world war. For example, I had read that although the T34 was a good tank design, it was plagued by mechanical problems. The T34's claim to fame was that it was the most mass produced tank in the second world war.

ya the tiger had mech issues...like most german tanks.. but when they were running they were killing machines. have you read the new book on Kursk? " blood steel and myth " very interesting book. good 1st hand accounts of the few tigers they had and how they used them.

not sure about the T34 and its reliability but I would guess it was more reliable if not a bit NON technical. they didn't even have radio's till after Kursk.

Thanks STIENER for the book suggestion. I'll pick it up after I finish my current read; 'It Never Snows In September'.

'It Never Snows In September'. is a must have book on Arnhem. I have it also...super book, good info. I like reading about the german side of some of the major battles.

Housies -> RE: What's you favorite tank in the game (1/27/2016 12:17:18 PM)

Who is the author of that book?

* BAck ontopic:
I 've read that german tanks were very difficult to repair once damaged. And the lack of replacement parts caused many light damaged tigers to be considered lost.
While the americans had simpler designs and mass production which made them able to repair lots of damaged shermans.

STIENER -> RE: What's you favorite tank in the game (1/27/2016 7:52:48 PM)

it never snows in September is written by Robert j Kershaw and blood steel and myth is written by George nipe.

german tanks...tigers and panthers in particular were harder to repair...yes.. but the germans also had good battle field repair facility's. one of the big problems is if you didn't win the battle, its hard to go back and tow your broken down or damaged tank off the battle field as the victors are usually in attendance. german crews would blow the tank up instead of letting it get captured in most cases.
theres numerous account of tiger tanks towing other tigers back to be repaired etc...which is against german armoured doctrine. they were supposed to use a tank tractor of which there wasn't that many that could tow the weight of a tiger. so the germans did have issues per say.
as you say parts were an issue as well as the war went on. they would canabalize tanks or fix one from 2 until parts arrived etc.

tigers were truly killing machines tho....some amazing story's ive read over the years of them in action.

STIENER -> RE: What's you favorite tank in the game (1/27/2016 7:59:19 PM)

there was a show on TV about guys today rebuilding WW2 tanks....forget what its called...TANK OVERHAUL its called...but they were working on a hellcat I believe...it has a v12 rotory motor I believe? but it was amazing how easy it was to pull the motor out and replace it. the motor literally slid out the back of the tank!!!! the back of the tank hinged down to make a ramp and the motor slid out and they slid one back in! American ingenuity [ spelling]
tigers wernt that easy...LOL...they rebuild a panther in the show.

CGGrognard -> RE: What's you favorite tank in the game (1/27/2016 11:35:54 PM)

I caught that episode of the Helical being repaired. I'll have to see if that program is still available.
