pjcoia -> The Duelists - need help! (8/6/2015 9:58:46 AM)

I will be upfront and say that I find this to be on the more complicated end of scenarios vs my capability, but I just find that when playing as the UK, there isn't much I can do but hope for a lot of luck to deal with the barrage of missiles that come quite early on. I generally barely get an inkling of where the Soviet carrier group is before Invincible and few escorts are burning pieces of metal. And then the Backfires arrive...

How should one approach this scenario? I can see the Bears, but the Sea Harrier CAPs which start active are typically refuelling by the time they are close enough and there aren't any other AA options around.

First of all, run away! Go south, abort the CAPs, you cant maintain them. Reload the other two harriers with sidewinders, you cant use them with Sea Eagle anyways.

Use your Sea Harriers in an Air Intercept mission. Launch them only when a Bear D comes around the North Cape, one SHAR per Bear.

Use Nimrods and the subs to hunt for Soviet subs and their surface group, if you ensure all Nimrods have sidewinders they could hunt Bears too! I suggest to give the Nimrods a high Patrol altitude to save fuel.

Once you found the surface group attack them with Sea Eagle equipped Buccaneers, preferably from two sides simultaneously.

As you have noticed, the single most important thing is for your CVHG to remain hidden since they can hardly survive the missile salvos. You can't do much else with that group until you are sure no one will find you.

Well, that worked a treat. I kind of assumed that the initial setup was to be followed to some extent, but yes, by heading south at flank, killing the CAPs and sending out lone AEW choppers, I managed to spot the Kiev before they found me. Nimrods were also very useful at killing Bears! The Shackletons were useless as they were just too far away, but the AEW choppers had very good loiter time.

Also, the Sea Harrier were basically useless except for some of the later Bears. They're way too slow to stop Backfires! So their AS-4s were the only missile that came through and were easily shot down by the Sea Dart/Sea Wolf defences.

Also, I found, accidentally, that the Slava next to the Kiev has some very long range ASuWs but it got taken out first by the Buccaneer strikes due to its location, luckily.

Thanks!

Sea Harriers useless?[X(] I got most of my Recon and ASW asset kills with SHARs, launch them only when you have customers around the north cape, run as many attacks as you can before bingo, and launch more if you need to. Thereby the airborne time will be short and you can turn them around more frequently.

I had some fun with that Slava once. I ran out of Sea Eagles and subs, so i closed in with my frigates for an exocet attack, i figured i just stay beyond the Slavas radar horizon.
That didn't work so well, as soon as she went active due to being attacked i learned that she has a quite remarkable OTH surface search radar. She found my ships easily and ended my brilliant plan with Sandbox salvos.

I keep coming back to this scenario...it's frustratingly addictive.

The RN subs.....I don't think I've ever managed to torpedo kill any of the surface units with them, except for mopping up already damaged ships and the tanker. The tops just don't have the performance.

I've sent Nimrods around the North Cape to kill tankers (which it turns out weren't being used) and ambushed bears and backfires with them. I figure if the scenario authors suspended reality and denied me land-based fighters then I'd assume the Russians didn't have any either.

A couple of times I've worked a couple of ships in close enough to the Russians to try and Exocet and Sea Skua attack. Sea Skua was futile. Exocet I think of 16 missiles maybe 1 scored a hit.

The odds are against you, but it's also possible to win without taking ship/sub losses.

Well, I got most of my recon kills with Nimrods, so by the time the SHARs had re-fuelled and re-armed there really was only the choppers left, so I didn't bother.

Very interesting scenario. I agree with Mr burns: If you avoid contact, steer away from enemy SAG and prevent russian from finding your task force is not too difficult. I used sea harrier and Nimrod to bears and badgers. Then killed most of enemy ships with coordinated Harpoon/Nimrod and Sea Eagle/buccaneer attacks.
