Knickers -> DWU not starting, Help! (8/8/2015 7:01:53 PM)

I press start distant worlds on the launcher and after some loading (It gets to the point where it says: "Feeding the giant kaltors") the screen pops up like its going to enter the game but then windows says: "distant worlds universe has stopped working" and I have to press cancel and quit it.

I made sure that DirectX and stuff is all installed and good, I went through the checklist for problems, and it still isn't starting?

I upgraded my laptop to Win 10, and I have had no problems starting the game.

Just to make you aware that Win 10 itself is not necessarily the problem.

it may need win10 vid drivers - when i upgraded i think it kept my old vid drivers and didn't auto upgrade to the win10 version - not sure what exactly happened but there was certainly a newer version of the vid drivers available to install after the upgrade

I made sure my video drivers are up to date.

Yeah most other people with Windows 10 have no issue starting the game.

Maybe to do with Media player/ Internet Explorer (or lack there-of)?, this as been a perceived issue since quite a few Windows 10 packages do not include one or both while other methods include them.

It doesn't generate one. Just looked at my game folder, last Crash Dump was from 3/3

Try running the game in windowed mode and disable the video intro.

Open the game installation folder and edit a file named startup.ini with a txt editor like Windows Notepad:

. Remove the ' before screenwidth 1024 and screenheight 768
. Add ' before playmovie 1

Save the file when exiting Notepad and run the game.

Thank you for your response.

This does not resolve the issue. The game still crashes, without a report, after "Feeding the Giant Kaltors", and just as it loads up the main menu screen.

At the moment that it crashes, the frames of the main menu GUI are visible, but the actual images and text are not.

Regarding the crash report file, are you checking the Windows documents folder at:
...\Documents\My Games\Distant Worlds Universe

There used to be, but now it's only on the Windows documents folder.

My final suggestion is to try to disable all background programs in case these are interfering with the normal running of the game.
You can do this by running msconfig and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services. Then once you have disabled all non-Microsoft services, please run the game and see if the issue persists.
If it does not, please then reopen msconfig and reenable those services, one by one, until you find the program causing the problem. A tutorial on how to do this can be found below:

Mine was working fine with Windows 10 until Aug 8th or 9th. They did updates on both those dates and it has not worked since. Loading splash seems to work fine and just as it goes to open the start menu it crashes. One can actually see the profile of the start menu but no detail. I have insured all drivers up to date, Win10 versions and verified DirX 9c is installed. I then tried deleting all content including save game and app data files and did a completely clean instill (Steam version). No joy, none of this appears to make any difference. Nearly all my other games are running fine. Including heavily modded open world games. Curiously enough, the one other game that has stopped working is another 4x space game.

My game would not load on steam.I had to go the steam folder and use compatibility windows7.The game is having issues with w10.

Crash report as requested. I have tried with tech support as well but have not found an issue. Tried all suggestions so far in this thread. Weird thing is it runs fine on my desktop at home which also has win 10 :S

I had a similar issue with a Windows 10 install on my laptop. The solution was as simple as editing the startup.ini file and changing "playmovie 1" to "playmovie 0". Hope that helps.

Disappointing. Before I arrived at disabling the intro movie as a final solution, I found another work around. On my laptop, Distant Worlds defaults to the discrete nVidia GPU. When I right clicked on the DW executable and selected the intel integrated graphics DW opened up no problem. The game is far more enjoyable with discrete graphics but is playable with the CPU on board graphics. I think you can do the same on a desktop with an intel CPU but I have not tried it.

You have hit the nail on the head. I seem to be able to run it if i switch to integrated graphics. Now i wonder why that is. Out of interest what GPU do you have on your laptop? I have the 980m

Terrific! At least, its a start. I have a 680M, so a few gens behind yours. I wonder why disabling the intro movie didn't allow the discrete graphics to run DW? It did on mine. Let me take another look at my setup and I'll report back.

Thankfully DWU is not too demanding graphically. Not so far anyway. Will have another poke around and see if i can figure anything out, but it really seems that it doesnt like the GPU. I wonder if this is an nvidea issue.

It might be related with drivers. This hybrid graphic technology can be problematic.
Have you updated to Windows 10 or made a clean install of Windows 10?

I have updated to win 10 on both my machines. The issue is only with the laptop however :) It can be played on integrated graphics, so it is not too much of an issue my end any longer. At least not at the moment :)

It's always best to perform a clean Windows installation then an update.
Anyway, we have reported this to Elliot (developer).

You shouldn't experience a big significant difference when playing with a Intel graphics rather then a Nvidia card, as the game is not very demanding in terms of graphics usage...
CPU clock speed is the important factor in terms of performance.
