Ouch!

2nd Army Tank Brigade is an Aus formation btw

Lowpe -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/5/2017 1:07:02 PM)

Just a quick analysis...

Japanese violated the rules by stacking 10 carriers into one task force...but still launched two perfect strikes. This due to the high value targets, and Abe's excellent air ratings and of course a good roll.

Analysis of the Allied northern invasion fleet, which had done work in Alaska, showed it to be basically stripped of bombers and flying heavy CAP. Hence, the gamble to put almost all of the KB's fighters on escort duties.

The strike was set to go in at 15K, to avoid some of the first pass AA, and to get as high as possible and yet allow divebombing. The Allied CAP was out of position and all at 10K. Some of the CAP didn't even have time to join the fight.

I had about 5 dud torpedoes fail to explode, and I seriously doubt any of the Allied battleships went down. Way too many strikes on smaller ships. On further examination, one went down most like ole Miss. New Mexico is in trouble too...Idaho isn't there.

Words fail at my own stupidity in losing those nice Japanese ships. I still can't figure out how they got there.[:(] But really, they are dead ships anyhow and I doubt I will even miss in the longer run other than their victory points right now.

I think Jocke pulled off the ultimate cheese in having two tank units invade an atoll. Serves him right.[sm=00000028.gif] In fact, a little baffled by the attack without the deathstar being present. I don't see the hurry yet.

Well, now Jocke knows where the KB is and I am sure to pay the price in a very aggressive move up New Guinea.[:(]

Lowpe -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/5/2017 1:12:17 PM)

Well, I was going to rush to flip the turn for Jocke, I already sent the replay and combat report to him.

However, Jocke has kindly informed me to take my time...he is going drinking and it will be a late night for him.

Not sure to the degree I pursue...I am worried about the deathstar...and I am also really light on combat ships and asw screens, and those ak and ap Jocke sank were going to refuel the KB so I am now not swimming in excess fuel in the area.

KB does have fuel for pursuit for a day or two. Plus I need to check torpedo stores, etc.

Allied ships are a long way from safety, and Midway is size 4 in perfect shape.[:)]

Lokasenna -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/5/2017 3:37:03 PM)

Egads.

By the way, those BBs are fine. Mississippi might be slowed up a little, but without seeing any kind of "heavy damage" from 3 torpedo hits leads me to believe that at least 1 of them did nothing of note, probably more like 2.

That would imply that they had nowhere to land - if Sys or Float damage is over 30 (I think), flight ops will be disabled for the ship. With 4 of them lost to ops, I'd figure 2 BBs with damage over 30.

Finished the turn and off to the Allies...

What will happen on morrow? This games fortunes turn on a dime, so I suspect a shellacking.

Nice work here!!! [&o]

Looks like you did your homework and read the tea leaves to perfection. This is the kind of op you dream of playing the Japanese. Saving the base, hitting the amphibs, destroying some CVEs and nailing his old BBs enough they won't be back for a long while!

So ... if fuel allows a day or two of pursuit is absolutely necessary, even if not with the entire KB. You know where the deathstar is located, and subs will be after your ass regardless of if you retreat or go forward. Move unexpectedly, I say, and get some more bounty. Those BBs aren't going anywhere fast and there strangely doesn't seem to be a lot of other surface cover here, right?

Anyway. Have a well earned snifter, sit back and look over the sunk ships report a few more times, and give at least some of your guys a chance to finish off those BBs. [:)]

Midget sub strikes...Allies left three juicy attack transports in Midway while the rest of their fleet scatters.

And also the Colorado...more heavily damaged than thought, but she still made pretty good speed.

There is an Iboat in that hex...so perhaps we will get lucky.

Lowpe -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/6/2017 12:44:47 PM)

The Iboat isn't needed...a solid strike with 500kg bombs, sinking sounds heard later, and a kingfisher is destroyed on the ground in the final intel report.

Lowpe -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/6/2017 12:48:11 PM)

Allies enter Magwe in force but leave the backdoor empty...so I am rushing troops there to seal them off.

Allies bomb both Magwe and the troops north of Shwebo, while Japan strafes and bombs the two isolated divisions SE of Shwebo. Only 1 Nick out of 120 is destroyed, and general attack follows and a good roll by the Allies get them a 1-2 but losses are good. Allied troops have malus for disruption, supply, etc. A good day.

What will tomorrow bring?

Lowpe -> RE: Gnashing of Teeth: Cries of Fury (7/6/2017 12:52:09 PM)

Why no general KB pursuit at Midway?

Basically because I am chicken. [:)] There are very compelling reasons why, but I will keep them compartmentalized for now. Maybe in a weeks time I will revisit the decision.

Little pigs get fed, big pigs gets slaughtered.[;)]

Wow. Your Judys did well. That is a solid day 2. And even if one of the heavily damaged BBs makes it, it'll be back pretty late in game. If those Judys have drop tanks there might even be another day of clean-up.

Anyhow, hopefully get another few whacks in her this next day.

They were kind of sitting ducks...I am disappointed I didn't get any afternoon strikes in, but my AV support is stretched super thin.

If I would have sent the KB in, I think it would have been a much better day although bad weather seems to be coming in. However, a lot of my thinking right now is damage avoidance and slowing down the Yankee offensive. A spotted KB doesn't accomplish that.

I keep on thinking IF I would have clicked an alternate route for the KB a month ago, the Kaga wouldn't have been hit with two torps and the strike would have been 10% stronger...but perhaps then it might have lost cohesion, and cohesion on the first strike yesterday was what won the fight decisively.

You are correct that I read the tea leaves for this attack...but I wasn't fully prepared. If I would have had another week, well then there would be a lot more sunk ships. I was fully prepared on the ground, except for forts only being 4 (60%) instead of 5. But I made the decision two or three weeks ago to pull the construction for the coming attack. A correct decision decision in hindsight.

When I last contemplated sending in the KB, at Darwin...I pulled back to avoid a full on clash with the Deathstar. It was then, that I made the decision to send them to Kure and await the Midway Invasion, which I felt sure would be with the Alaska carriers, battleships and invasion force -- a perfect match for the KB. I also felt sure it would be the next major invasion. Winter in the north, plus lack of dl and strong garrisons plus involved fighting already put them off the table.

I did toy with the idea of sending the KB into the North Pacific to catch this group ferrying supplies and or troops forward, but decided it was too far, too much fuel, and would put the KB too far from the last known DS location.

I had 40 Emilys and Mavis at Midway, and the lousy Yankees got within spitting distance before being spotted. I was hoping for one more day of warning so he did take me quite by surprise.

In all likelihood, the New Mexico's "heavy damage" is System.

I think that might be a little too pessimistic...her speed is 3 for the day.

Anyhow, hopefully get another few whacks in her this next day.

My reasoning:

1) You hit her with 250kg bombs. Did any actually penetrate the deck armor or the belt armor and get to the vitals - engine damage messages, etc?

2) The previous torpedo hits did not show heavy damage, so floatation damage was not yet to 50. Nor engine. If you didn't see messages related to either from the bomb hits, then that's not what it is.

3) Fires cause system and minor flooding damage (from being put out), so it's possible that minor flooding damage tipped her floatation over the threshold, but I'm not sure you'd see this in the combat report immediately

4) Bombs blow up on the deck, in the superstructure, and take out AA mounts - generally, causing system damage

And again, you were hitting with 250kg bombs.

And the afternoon strike...

Allied Ships
CVE Natoma Bay, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
BB Mississippi, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 3, on fire
BB Colorado, Bomb hits 7, on fire
PG Charleston, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
AP William Ward Burrows, Bomb hits 4, and is sunk
BB New Mexico, Bomb hits 7, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Sigsbee
BB Maryland, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring BB New Mexico

Well this was from a day ago, and they weren't 250 kg bombs...but 500kg off which some penetrated.
