The Tojo arrive...a very unorthdox attack as the drop bombs on the runways from 30K. The Zereos are escorting and sweep ahead.

This picture is from the chase portion of the fight, after the Tojo dropped their little bombs. The Tojo didn't even show up in the first half of the replay...just the sweeping zeroes. And it is important to understand they swept ahead and were on escort.

The Allies are a little worried here. 0, None, nada, losses. Not even a disablement among the ground troops.

No more attacks over Akyab....but there were ships left to kill. Missed on a nice xAP...

Near Katha, Allied 833 AV attacks my 600 defending. The big division there, the 19th, is dug in to the tune of forts 2 and easily weathers the attack.

Maybe I sank 8-9 ships all but one in the 8-9 vp range.

Air losses make up a little for yesterdays attacks.

June 5, 1943

Horn Island falls...I put some Rufes up, but they couldn't stop the 4E bombers. An Allied Hvy Cruiser force also bombarded. It was fun while it lasted.

2 Days from the Frank A starting.

Supplies are flowing into Burma from a variety of sources. Feels good.

Got a 1-1 at Paoshan and knocked forts down to 3. Runway damaged, so no rebuilding. There is one of those New Chinese units there, the ones with the American TOE, and jimminy crickets the AA in that beast is a killer. Shot down 10 Nicks at 6000 feet....ouch!

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/19/2017 4:51:13 PM)

Frank A starts production in 2 days. A6M5c in 3.

Judy 3 starts research today. Judy 2 starts production 7/43.

I will feel much better with two Frank Squadrons...one in Burma and one around Rabaul.

I didn't read back through all your posts, but how many R&D factories did you have working on the Frank to get it a year early ?

I put 9 size 30 and one size 60. Perhaps three were from the start of the game, but as soon as I took over I increased it to 10 total.

June 6th, 1943

Big CAP trap fails as nobody shows up.

Allies forget to change their orders and heavy bombers hit Manus...but bomb the troops ineffectively. I had a slew of transports on the ground there, and only a few Rufes intercepted.

For a moment there I thought I was going to lose quite a few transports.

Lost a tanker to sub south of Cam Ranh Bay.

Advanced 4 size 30 factories to the Frank R.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/19/2017 7:30:58 PM)

The six existing squadrons that can upgrade immediately to the Frank A.

I will convert the Oscar squadrons first and the Tojo Sentai last. Don't have that many Tojo Squadrons anyhow...

A 7th sentai arrives in 100 days.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/19/2017 9:22:24 PM)

June 8th, 1943

Rabaul front...I am getting beat badly here. I have not really allocated much in the way of troops, nothing larger than a regiment or a garrison. There are only two artillery units here, some mountain guns and some 90mm mortars which will shortly join up to form the 26th Independent Mixed Brigade.

I have some coastal guns now unloading at Kavieng, and some rebuilding at Manus (Horn Island refugees) and another unit at Manus that is prepped for Umboi (but they have to make the dash there).

The 144th regiment, a sub unit of the 55th Division, got trashed fighting at Moresby, retreated across the Kodoka trail and eventually was flown back the supply rich (relatively speaking) environs of Rabaul where it is rebuilding very quickly.

There is only one unit of AA, and that at Rabaul.

So, I am holding on by my toenails...I did build Rabaul to level 9 runways, Manus to 5, but nothing else past 2. Forts in general are between 0-3 nothing more.

Rabaul has 30,000 supply, Manus 15K, Kavieng 15. Almost every place else is just barely holding on.

A lot of Japanese players really build this area up and make it a line in the sand. I have taken a different tack, and tried to use almost exclusively air mobile units backed by a somewhat strong air presence.

The Allies for their part, have used nothing larger than a heavy cruiser for a while and are gradually moving north. All of my attempts pretty much have failed to sting the advancing Allies, but I think they have slowed them down a little. Of course the Allies have over built everything...I feel that if I were to build up an area to prevent the Allies from moving forward, then they would seek a different route.

And I think I prefer fighting here, simply for the reason I have never done it before.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/19/2017 9:43:05 PM)

Burma

Much nicer with stacking limits. Supplies seem to flow nicely into it if you keep feeding Bangkok. I hope to take Paoshan in 3 more attacks. I am curious to see if the oil and fuel will flow from Rangoon into China.

3 Divisions have arrived recently at Bangkok, plus several artillery units and rapidfire guns.

The Allies are keeping deep recon on Moulmein and since Jocke pulled off an invasion here before it is something that needs watching.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/19/2017 11:57:13 PM)

Hectic few days with lots of turns flipped.

I have been busy moving engineers to the outer line of Japan's major defenses which will be the rough Hive of Captain Cruft fame plus Luzon.

I am taking lessons learned from last game and bulking up some places very significantly. Getting used to the paucity of engineers and air supply is difficult...plus the refineries not generating supply...but we shall overcome.

The major industrial cities of the HI will get forts as high as I can build them, in the hopes the industry is fortified from bombing. The clear coastal invasion hexes of the HI will get forts 5, and Hokkaido even higher.

The Japanese Islands are all in a state of fort building, well most of them.

Okinawa, Formosa, Samah, and Luzon are all to become festungs, especially air festungs. I love the rail network on Luzon. I am expecting the major push by the Allies to be up along New Guinea, DEI and thru Burma. I think the Allies are going to avoid Guam..but rather look to island hop in a low risk fashion.

My outer defenses are fairly weak, especially with the debacle in San Diego. I just bought back two more destroyed divisions the 1st Tank and an infantry division. But we are still fighting there.

I still have quite a few ships stranded at Pearl, but that is getting better with each passing week. Quite a few cargo ships have been converted back from carrying troops to cargo, and I am going to really focus on moving a lot of oil, fuel and resources (Olorin expanded LI aggressively, and I have a big appetite for it on the HI).

5.5 million in supply, 7 million fuel, and 3 million oil. I feel so rich right now, but fear the huge supply cost in rebuilding the combat divisions from the West Coast and also the PP cost in freeing them up again.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/20/2017 12:49:51 AM)

Estimated plane arrivals:

12/43 for Frank R Maybe 11/43. Depends how well the starting Frank R factory repairs.

2/44 for the A6M8

Myojo 6/44 only a couple of squadrons

J2M5 3/44 (only 4 squadrons)
N1K2 George 1/44 (only 4 squadrons)
Oscar IV 9/43 important plane given the number of squadrons that fly it
61d & 61c 9/43 (only 4 squadrons till 2/44)
Peggy 1a 2/44 (only 5 squadrons)

I am purely speculating but the Sam may start 5/44? If the game goes long enough, there is a potential to field the Ki94-II and the SamJ -- Olorin put quite a few factories into both.

Don't forget the supply cost to build forts on the home islands. You can use 1M supply in a week building forts above 2 at all the big bases.

I don't see how. For one thing, I don't have enough engineers to do that.

Because most bases on home islands can be built very big...it is only 2800 supply to build a level 4 fort. 4000 for a level 5 fort.

A lot of the raw building is already behind me.[;)]

Right now I am gaining supplies daily...plane research is fairly mild...My short term goal is to surpass 6 million supply, which I think is very doable right now. 7 million would be better.[:)]

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/20/2017 5:18:56 PM)

June 9th, 1943

An IJAAF bombing run. Allied flak is such a killer, but I have to probe the Allies to get them to risk their air force flying LRCAP. Now with plentiful supplies in Burma...I can start doing more things like this.

I think the Allies have pretty lethal AA right around the 8-9K altitude band...so most of my runs will be made at 10K, unless I can figure out there is not much in the way of AA.

I swept this hex the day before with Tonies, and nothing was flying. That was the first offensive use of the Tony which has a dismal range.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/20/2017 7:28:23 PM)

Here, this squadron represents a 400% increase in my night fighters, as I only have the Endo Detachment right now of 2 planes.

A lot of Japanese players like to supersize their night fighter squadrons, but this one isn't eligible. Plus, I think it throws off the challenge of the strategic night bombing campaign.

This squadron, is of course, not eligible for supersizing, and if it could it would be only to size 24. However, it is dividable, and this will provide some level of night fighting at 3 Bases: Rangoon, Bangkok, and somewhere else most likely in Sumatra like Medan. As other sentai become available, it will reform most likely.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/20/2017 7:48:56 PM)

I have three ARD, floating dockyards in this game, which is real nice.

I moved the starting ARD back from Truk to Guam. They move slow, and are vulnerable to subs so I wanted to do it early.

Here you can see the first patient the ARD worked on. Just groovy.[:)]

I really got addicted to repair ships my last game, especially as all my shipyards were bombed back into the stone ages.

I have one ARD at Okinawa, and the third in the Kuriles. I plan on moving them back to Korea, and upriver from Shanghai eventually depending how the game goes. I would like to keep them all operational and create hidden repair ports.

I have two AR (2 more converting), 20 AD, 6 AS, and many AG, 3 APG, and probably 20 AKE.

Long live the repair ship!

Only one unit of 800 men and 3 guns here at Ledo, if recon is to be believed.

I will sortie 36 Helens at 6000K to visit some love on the runway there.

Lowpe -> RE: Fun and Games in the Solomons (2/21/2017 3:03:11 AM)

I boosted the attack on Ledo with another bomber squadron.

I upgraded a few squadrons, started production of the A6M5c, gazed lovingly at my 5 Frank A's in the pool, throttled up the A6M8 research (just switching the A6M5c factories to it).

Worked on Recon, getting more AV out and about, and putting some boots on the ground in different places. I know I forgot a few things, will see if it hurts.

It looks like you can resize it. Usually it's only those that have a set resize that can't be resized. I seem to remember getting that group to 24 myself. [:)]
