Knavey -> Best way to kill seaplanes/auxiliary on remote islands? (8/25/2015 4:30:56 PM)

Any help here would be appreciated. I want to put out the "eyes" that are out there. Opponent is leaving a squadron at various bypassed bases which I need to eliminate.

Is there a surefire way aside from invasion to kill them?

I take it the seaplanes are supported by base personnel NOT an AV right?

Nothing sure... you can try bombing the "airfield" there, but I'm not sure if it will fail to target it.

You can bomb the troops, if that's how he's supporting them, to try to disable the aviation support and/or burn supplies. I think you can always bomb the port whether it's size 0 or not. If he's running them via tender, bombing the port can eliminate that and he'll have to either move them out or suffer their loss to operations as the planes are eventually rendered inoperable.

The base is Truk. Not much moving in or out of it anymore for Japan. But, the guys that are there are pretty entrenched I am sure. Nothing in port, so the seaplanes are supported by guys on the ground.

Well, thats what my Navy 4Es are for I suppose. Time to start working it over.

Although the seaplanes don't "use" the airfield so to speak, they can get hit if you target it. The trouble is the bigger the airfield the decreased concentration of aircraft, thus getting a hit on so few will take some time and LOTS of bombs....

...plus "Service" damage (which you as the opponent cannot see broken out from Runway damage) will slow down and (when 100%) eventually stop damaged aircraft from repairing.

Keeping it at 100% is going to be the trick. I would think it would be staffed with a good ENG group and ample supplies.

A bombardment mission every week or so with your new ships will not only keep the service up, but also give your new crews some valuable experience. Count it as a live fire exercise. Same with new air units.

I suppose I'm a newbie on this forum, but I recognize the OP's name as something of a legend -- he is teaching us a valuable history lesson reflected in the game. The US bombed Truk through the last month of the war in an effort to keep its air assets suppressed.

I was going to suggest bombardment, but seeing that the base is Truk, I would be careful to use BBs and keep your range open, Truk has good CD guns.

I'm doing this nasty trick right now as the Japanese, stocking bypassed islands with float planes for surveillance. The only real way to stop them is to invade and take the island- everything else is a bit of a stopgap. Even with 100% service damage you can keep flying in replacements (if you are willing as the Japanese) and just endure the minor losses. It can be worth it to keep tabs on what the Allied navy is up to...

pontiouspilot -> RE: Best way to kill seaplanes/auxiliary on remote islands? (8/26/2015 3:25:39 PM)

We are talking about 2 separate situations. The first is leaving seaplanes at active land base with support. Capturing the base is the only way to ensure no such scout activity. Heavy blockade and bombardment may destroy enough supplies to make operations untenable but don't hold your breath. The second situation sees a seaplane tender alone as support. The Allies have many such ships and they seem to be largely "cloaked" if sitting at some isolated island. I have never had one ferreted out yet. I suspect that patrols of suspected bases by small surface TFs might shake them out. Alternatively a low level recon might show up these ships as in port. Has anybody tried rooting such single ship supports for seaplanes???

Tough to do with limited resources in 1942. I always seem to have other more important needs. Pretty hard to eradicate them without invading. Nice to see you are back lurking around.

This is a tactic that I love, floatplane with a tender. They are hard to spot. Once you do though, killing the tender is pretty straightforward ... until another is pushed into its place. [;)]

Maybe just swing by with a CVE loaded with fighters and shoot them down? (Or use P38s if they're in range.) If the base is isolated, the aircraft can't be replaced.

For forward exposed bases when playing as the allies , I use the AVD. The 27KT one , NOT the 18. They make for a fast getaway.
