Hi there.
Making my first steps into the game right now, the manual/book always adjacent to look everything up.

I started with the Op. Husky scenario to get accustomed to the air warfare system. So everybody interested in helping could just fire it up and will receive the very same situation I describe here.

So I so far understood that the automatic air directive creation from the very first screen in the game creates the current air directives and orders them to the available air forces when I select the "set air directives" option.
After doing this, I selected the summary to learn how to use and interpret it.

Now to my problem:
There were two air superiority directives generated, one for the Malta Air Cmd, the other for the Tactical AF. I clicked into those to watch their Air HQ's Planning screens. Their GROUPS assignments are set to AUTO. I understand by reading in the manual that the AUTO setting prevents the assigned AGs to do their job also in the opposing player's phase, but that is not the point.
What I am wondering is, that there is actually no AG assigned at all. When I click on AUTO to open the assignment overview listing all AGs of that HQ, I see plenty of appropriate AGs but none of those is assigned to any task (no asterisks showing).
Also I wonder why most AGs show a range of zero (0). Only appropriate AG showing a range more than 0 is the 33rd USAAF FB Grp with a range of 140, based in Pantelleria, of the Tactical AF. And even that AG is not assigned when checking the AD planning screen of the Tactical AF HQ.

I guess I just don't understand everything to interpret all this correctly. But although I read everything in the manual addressing these parts of the air interfaces I don't get behind the described questions.

So, how can all these AGs (but a single one) have a range of zero?
Why does the air directive creation create the superiority directives (as desired) but apparently without assigning AGs? Other created directives do have AGs assigned to them.

AUTO means the AI will auto select eligible air groups to fly - so those in white text can and may fly.

The 'range' indicates from how far away from the staging base where the entire formation will group up at, and fly from there. As an example, if launching strategic bombing over the Ruhr, it would be best to have the staging base be where the escort fighters are based so as to maximize the range they can fly from and escort the bombers to the target.

To you Red Lance, I think I absolutely understand what you are saying but I find the game confusing the player in this issue. From a "user" perspective, whenever I don't edit any AD manually after using the automatic air directive creation, all my ADs are working on kind of AUTO setting if you understand what I mean. All ADs will use eligible AGs, completely without my interference. So it would appear consistent if all ADs would display AG commitment the same way. But this is not the case. Superiority and recon just display AUTO with no AGs attached. Ground Support for example does display assigned AGs. Those AGs also get the asterisks markings, as described in the manual. Since those AGs were assigned also automatically, I don't understand why the interface is displaying this differently.

Since I didn't interfere, all ADs should display AUTO and show no assigned AGs or all of them should show.

So besides from confusing me, there may be a reason for the different handling but I couldn't find it in the manual. I would really like to know how that works.

It's a good question. As you have probably discovered all ADs apart from Ground Support fly in the air phase. During the air phase the air groups are chosen automatically. Gnd Sp has assigned AGs because they fly in a different phase and the factors effecting selection for the AI are different. Here they are reserved for that phase otherwise they would be used up in the air phase by other ADs.

The AUTO with no air groups is perhaps confusing but you are jumping two steps - when you go to the select air groups list and assign the first air group AUTO no longer displays but then only that air group will fly. Until you select that Air group you are still in AUTO. How would you show the first step?

Ok, I got it, I didn't have those different phases in mind. So I assume if I add some AGs manually, the other AGs will still be available for the AUTO tasking? Or do I effectively set all the other AGs to idle, since the program will interpret my AG assignment as a "only that single AG and nothing else"?

Yes and Yes (I think). The ADs work individually but if only X Air Group is manually assigned to an AD it will only use X and X won't be available for other ADs.

AUTO allows maximum flexibility for the AI however ADs run in the order listed for the HQ so there is a danger that air groups get used up before the last AD.

If you are still confused then please ask more questions as I realise the system is complex and hard to explain. Once you get it it's easy (honest).

please recheck my post, I accidently wrote AD instead of AG.[:o]

I wanted to be sure that if I assign one AG manually, the other AGs still will be handled AUTO although AUTO won't display anymore. But now I understand that in fact I am changing the whole AD from AUTO to manually so other AG will be available for AUTO tasking but not for that specific AD since it doesn't get handled AUTOmatically anymore. So I see the logic now. If I assign an AG, all the unassigned won't do that AD but be available for other ADs which run on AUTO mode.

yes, they run in order but in several priority cycles from high to low. So you can bump priority for more important ADs.
