Shooting down planes in V7.1 (Full Version)

I have been playing SPWAW v 7.1 for about 6 months and played maybe 100 scenarios. Obviously I enjoy the game. However, I had never seen a plane get shot down, so I thought I run a little experiment. I spent the whole day (I have WAY too much time on my hands) and played battles in which I bought nothing but 88 and 37mm flak guns against Soviet assaults and advances. Soviet planes flew through hails of fire of 4-37's and 4-88's at a time. Not one was shot down. I have to conclude that it is not possible to shoot down a plane.

Not true it actually happens often, alot of things such as experieince, visibilty, distance, morale play a major factor. A/C were taking some damage during your test weren't they, then it's a matter inflicting enough damage.

The most damage that any plane took was 1 point according the the list after the game.

This is REALLY starting to p*** me off! When I create a battle, if I choose to buy both sides' equipment, it won't let me buy attack aircraft. I guess this is so that I can't prove that planes can't get shot down in v7.1!

Make sure you set the weather as '1' (clear), and make it daylight. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to purchase them. It is also helpful to turn the random element off (the XXX in the setting). Set it at the number of air sections you wish.

I actually shot down a plane! OOOO HOOO!

I managed to buy planes for the US in June '44. I bought as many P51 B's as I could and had them essentially attack a valley of 8 flak 88's and 8 flak 37's. I actually KO'ed 2 planes.

IT CAN BE DONE!

I have most success vs. aircraft with multibarreled small bore weapons like Flakvirlings and the DEADLY M16 halftrack ... I also find that a bunch of halftracks can often get a lucky it on a strike aircraft with their AAmg's. I rarely seem to see large bore weapons score a hit :( If you do a search, there's a thread from a while back about effective AA defense :D It's fun to shoot 'em down he he he ... :D

Rapid-fire multibarreled small caliber guns are more effective vs. aircraft. :cool:

AA guns are used vs. Tanks heheh :p

AA Machineguns and autocannon are used vs. aircraft, light tanks and infantry. *ouch*

I still remember the first time I shot down a plane in SP. It was waaaaaaayyyyy back in 1996. One of my 251's brought down a P-38 with its AAMG. I thought I was going to burst with pride. I did burst with laughter and glee... which quickly turned to concern when the plane crashed right into one of my infantry squads. Doh!

Oh, I hate it when that happens. I've done it in MC Lost Victories. :eek:

It hurts even more when it's one of your own planes...

But it does give you a little satisfaction if that same plane (yours) just finished bombing the tar out of a column of tanks... also yours. :)

I'm playing M4 Jess in a Great Battle called [B]"The Factory"[/B] I'm Germans and M4 Jess is the Americans.......He is moving off the beaches of Anzio.....I forgot which of my AA Trucks...shot him down :eek: :eek: :eek: But it was a P-38 that i did shoot down......and it felt [B]"Very GOOD!!!!!"[/B] :D :D :D :D
