I completely respect the depth of the game. It is fab

but

for some reason, I am not falling in love with it like I did Crusader Kings 2. It might be because I haven't yet got passed the early exploration stages and I tend to restart not long after I have tech'ed up a little and have met a few species. I suppose I am almost expecting to have to exterminate all I come into contact with too.

Could someone explain the various phases of the game and the best way for me to play to get the game to start telling stories like I know it is able to.

Thanks!

It is hard to say what you will enjoy the most.

For me the problem is actually starting a game and doing the early exploration phase. I need to play a bit to attach myself to my colonies and such. I am also not all that fond of actually declaring war, I prefer to be dragged into war by an ally or to be stabbed in the back.

What really kicks life into the game for me, is when some AI power offends/annoy me. In the old day of no zones of influence it could be colonizing next to my capital where I had all my mines. Or colonizing inside "my cluster" in a cluster galaxy. Grabbing that 100% continental prospect ahead or me, or snatching that juicy independent also helps. I enjoy a good war, and in a good war I am somewhat inferior but manage to come out ahead. My best war memory was in writing an AAR where I was attacked "in the back" just as I wrapped up a war on the other edge. It took a long time to get the upper hand on the southern flank.

A good pirate war to start the game is fun for me. That is one war where I for sure start in an inferior position, at least if I am stupid enough to run very slow research and drop a few colonies early on while refusing to pay any protection money.

I find certain mods really upped the enjoyment of the game over vanilla due to the enhancements to the ai and other areas the two man dev team simply didn't have time or funds to polish up. Icemania's ai mod with enhancements is a good place to start as its more a set of tweaks to vanilla dw than a full blown total conversion. As to getting past the early stages you need to prioritize both fuel storage and hyperdrive speed to get your exploration ships out there to find the other empires and to quickly expand out to keep other empires away from planets you don't have colonization tech for yet. Once you get a solid frontier setup you can settle down and begin playing the diplomacy game as you fill out your empire and get the key military tech up and running so you don't get wiped when you meet an aggressive empire.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the initial exploration push where everything is new and you have no idea what is in the next system, so I utterly adore mods like Lower Speed and Range which make that phase of the game a lot longer.
I also like things to go at a slower pace (and really resent having to constantly refit ships) so I prefer tech costs to be quite expensive.

You must ask yourself what it is you enjoy the most when you play. No matter the answer there will probably be a mod or a setting somewhere to enhance it.
It all comes down to a simple question. Nothing too complicated really, just a small matter of interest for my associates...

What do you want?

This is quite true as the game plays out very differently depending on your starting conditions and empires and such. Soooo many options.. [8D]
