GaryChildress -> Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 10:09:09 PM)

My AVG license is up in a few days and I'm sort of on the fence about whether I will renew or go try something else. I guess I should keep it because I haven't had any problems with it. On the other hand its $54 and I'd like to find something cheaper out there if it exists. Anyone have any recommendations, or should I keep what's been working for me?

Thanks.

Alan Sharif -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 10:11:47 PM)

I have used Avast for years, and never had a problem, plus it's free. However, I am no expert on these matters.

zakblood -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 10:27:35 PM)

what operating system do you use Gary?

GaryChildress -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 10:30:01 PM)

windows 10, 64 bit I believe.

VPaulus -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 10:31:56 PM)

If you're looking for an effective, non intrusive with a small footprint AV than NOD32 should be your choice. [:)]

GaryChildress -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 11:38:49 PM)

Mostly I'm looking for cost effective. I'm on a budget these days. :(

GaryChildress -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 11:40:09 PM)

Although the NOD32 appears to be cheaper than AVG. Has anyone else here used NOD32? [:)]

Waffenamt -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/26/2015 11:49:05 PM)

If you really want to save some money just use Windows Defender that's built into Windows 10. I don't find it that bad and I also have Malware Bytes running. They actually do catch stuff when I wander off the path...

rickier65 -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 12:13:20 AM)

I've been using the free version of AVG for several years. My wife uses the free version AVIRA. They both seem to do what's needed.

I'm running "AVG Free Edition 2015" (I just double checked). And I know it's still updating. This system is still Win 7, but I also have it on my Win 10 Laptop.

Thanks
Rick

GaryChildress -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 1:20:06 AM)

Interesting. I went to the AVG website and they have a free edition. But this time last year I tried to stick with the free edition and for some reason it told me that it was no longer free IIRC. Maybe they changed their mind? [&:]

VPaulus -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 1:45:44 AM)

The main problem with AVG and Avast are the false positives.

Rosseau -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 2:17:29 AM)

The free version of Avast has saved me so many times, I bought the retail version just to thank them.

Yes, falses can get annoying, but quick turn off Avast for 10 minutes from the task bar. It also offers a pretty quick boot scan.

IMO, beware McAfee, it is incredibly intrusive.

Ranger33 -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 2:20:23 AM)

Windows Security Essentials/Defender for day-to-day and the free version of Malware Bytes for the occasional scan is all you need. They are free and have little to no resource footprint. Anything too nasty for those will probably get past the paid software as well.

I use it, it's been great so far. Combined with MSE is a pretty good setup.

I would also recommend the built-in Windows Defender; light, free and it runs well unlike other AVs who are not yet ready for Windows 10.

But layer your defense; use MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit (free version) to run alongside WD and use the free Malwarebytes AntiMalware for the occasional on-demand scan.

Finally, take an image of your drive regularly and you will be fine.

zakblood -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 6:31:08 AM)

i'll expand on that a bit above as well, cloud storage providers now all give away free amounts, so just have a few accounts and back up to clouds, this way if disaster happens, you have your image and some backed up elsewhere as well to recover[;)]

"CCleaner" is good for cleaning up the junk that builds up on your PC, and there is a free version...highly recommended!

I would say never go cheep with your Anti-Virus.

I recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
It is built by the Russians and they know their business when it comes to hacking and virus.

Don't worry that it's Russian, if they want they can hack anything on the planet.

I was in need of a Malware program so thanks all for this suggestion. Just added it and it took out 1,626 malware. It has been a while since I have had that extra level of protection. I feel better now about surfing.

1626 threats...wow! If I were you I would download and run the "CCleaner" (if you haven't yet) to clean off all the junk on your computer.

I use NOD32 and I'm not having any problems with it

Jafele -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 9:10:55 PM)

Try Total Security 360 essential. Itīs free and uses the avira and Bit Defender engine.

jamus34 -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 10:48:46 PM)

I've used bitdefender the past couple of years.

Overall I like, couple of quirks but much much less intrusive than Norton.

I've used ESET too with good results but that was a while ago and not sure on current quality.

Fred98 -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/27/2015 11:39:37 PM)

I too recommend Kaspersky. I have been using it for 4 or 5 years. My current PC is running WIN 8.1

rhondabrwn -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/28/2015 1:50:17 AM)

I know you are looking for "cheap" or "free" but System Mechanic Pro is on sale for 1/2 price right now and it includes anti-virus protection with a host of other maintenance tools. They are also always running "get an extra year added for $15" specials so you only get hit with the big purchase price once. All updates and new versions are free, once you're on board you can just cruise along with no worries about updates. They had a Windows 10 version out quickly and no problems.

rhondabrwn -> RE: Looking for good Anti Virus Software (9/28/2015 1:51:48 AM)

I've been using it for about a decade now and very satisfied with all the tools and diagnostics. They continue to improve the product and add features with every free upgrade.

I do have it. But for some reason it wipes out my passwords from all of my sites I go to. So I stopped using it. Maybe I don't do it correctly. But Malwarebytes took them out. It also had a clearly marked button where I could select to save passwords
