Black 2D Unit Profiles (Updated: All 2D Views Included)

Oh, the good times. Men were of cast iron, games of cardboard, and counters with black tank profiles. They may never come back, but we can reminiscent.

Here's another little mod for the game, with 2D Unit Icons in dark grayscale (rather than pitblack) for that little extra effect. I found out these were but a few minutes per icon sheet, so I can perhaps consider adding other zoom levels than just the 2D Zoom-In to files.

22/6/2016: Now included in the 1.02 UPDATE - Just launch JSGME to try them out!

Not familiar with JSGME? For a brief instruction on how to activate the mod, have a look at the JSGME mod enabler how-to guide HERE

Enjoy! [:)]

which unit icon panel is for view #5 this one icon6d30.bmp? Did you paint every pixel or is their a faster way?

Yes, '6d' correlates to files used in #5 view (2D Normal). Here's the zoom levels and how they correlate in file naming:

quote:

Then, there's of course the seven zoom levels that come with the game, listed here by their file identifier.

First, the original five views:
  • 1d, or 2D Extreme Zoom-Out (25%)
  • 2d, or 2D Zoom-Out (50%)

  • 3d, or 3D Normal
  • 4d, or 3D Zoom-Out
  • 5d, or 3D Extreme Zoom-Out

Then, the ones added to CS:ME
  • 6d, or 2D Normal (75%)
  • 7d, or 2D Zoom-In (100%)

Actually, no. I have created transparent PNG master files without background color, just the shapes. What I did I then selected the unit profiles, converted them to grayscale, then adjusted brightness and contrast until I was happy with how they looked.

If you would like to see the other zoom levels too, I can add them maybe next weekend.

The little letters in HQs are a major pain though. They don't scale very well at all, I needed to fix manually pixel by pixel for the final files. Not really looking forward to do that for this set, so might just erase them all, or put a simple marker for org level identifier?

    Any ideas on that? [:)]

Here's another little mod for the game...

I like these so much that -- especially if you also create 6d (and even 2d?) variants -- we should consider making these official, still another among many, many options for customizing the look of the game.

budd -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (9/29/2015 11:32:14 PM)

figured there was a faster way. I liked the units so much i did start painting them[:D] got 5 done. I like them much better than the stock.did you create the transparent master files by hand? or did you alter the in game ones.

Crossroads -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (9/30/2015 4:05:35 PM)

    Hello Budd,

Here's how the files were built, more or less:

  • I received the original icons##7d.bmp file from Warhorse
  • I replace the background color with a transparent alfa channel and save them as PNG. This is what I call my master file
  • With PNG version, I can add helper layers I have prepared, such as hex grid for terrain files, or counter grid for these ones
  • Then, with Unit Icons as the top layer, I position them to the counters, and do some other tweaking and finalization
  • I scale / resize them as PNG files with no background, so no antialiasing with background color
  • Once happy, I export the PNG versions to BMP, and add the final touches manually for the release versions.
  • At this stage, I apply the background color as Magenta, so any leaks or errors scream from the game [:)]

It is easier than what it sounds here. Perhaps I can do a little write up to explain this step by step. It is a very helpful technique for sure, compared to working with BMP + background color.

Done. See the stickied BMP-PNG-BMP posting.

Well i tried, must of done something wrong. got an error and the black icons didn't show up on the counters, they were just blank.

budd -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (10/1/2015 2:48:11 AM)

I can't help it. I am seriously falling in love with these black counter profiles.

FroBodine -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (10/4/2015 7:39:31 PM)

I also LOVE these black counters. The download in the first post just has these counters in the '4' view. Switching to '5' or higher and they go back to the original counters.

I hate to be greedy, but is there any chance that you will be modifying the other views, especially '5', to also show these black counters?

    They are awesome!

FroBodine -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (10/6/2015 6:48:26 PM)

Super! Thank you for doing this. I look forward to 1.01 and the new official counters!

Crossroads -> RE: Black 2D Unit Profiles (10/6/2015 7:03:13 PM)

    You're most welcome [:)]
