Oberst_Klink -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (6/18/2018 5:15:12 PM)

Be good, altes Schlachtross :P Eagle-FZS did a jolly good job with all his works and continues to do so. YES, I still have to deliver the Bouzegza scenario...among others. With the new Algerian War specific .OOB it will be done.

The Finnish Army stockpiled plenty of WW2 era material to late eighties, so part of my NCO training at the time was to become familiar with most prominent squad weapons, including the Finnish M/39 version of a Mosin Nagant rifle, L-31 Suomi SMG, and yes: the mighty Maxim 09.

After assault rifles, Mosin Nagant was just a ridiculous thing, you basically just point it at anything you want to hit, and then pull the trigger to, well, hit it exactly as you meant. There's a funny little review video on M/39, the funny thing with that is the reviewer just starts laughing at some point. That brought memories to me [:)]

I was not mightily impressed with Suomi L-31 SMG, quote unergonomic and heavy, it might have been because we had drum magazines, I would have much preferred the "coffin" magazine I had a chance to try later on.

But as for the mighty old Maxim. What a weapon. Ours was with a Finnish tripod of the era, with hydraulic levers to adjust the firing sector, so basically if you had an open sector, you just mow everything down in front of you without much effort.

[image]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/Maxim_M_32-33_Mikkeli_2.JPG/640px-Maxim_M_32-33_Mikkeli_2.JPG[/image]

The more modern LMGs just don't give that feeling with their rifle style stocks. Of course heavy as h*ll, not a fun thing to drag the weapon and the tripod around, in addition to all the ammo boxes and gear that goes with it. But on a static defence not a bad companion to have around [&o]

So while everyone, me included, is busy putting CS Vietnam BEATA together, we're bringing CS East Front ALPHA along. At this stage, there's the Finnish, German, Polish, and Soviet OOB in place.

Time, then, to try things out. And what do you know. THE INVASION HAS BEGUN!

No more death-by-recon, for instance. As the 5. Aufklärung-Bataillon moves forward, they initiate a Recon Reveal action towards the tranquil village of Waldowo. Where the brave men of the Polish 16th Uhlan regiment are ready, waiting at them. THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

Note that the German Storch was there as well, but in this ALPHA its recon flag was wrong, and it was not able to Recon Reveal. To be fixed, as this is indeed why to test these early, and to test these a-plenty [sm=00000028.gif]

One of the cool little feature Berto's put in place are Minefields dedicated to Side A or B, if so chosen by Scenario Designer. Now you can see your own minefields on map despite them being outside LOS of any your units in game. Enemy, on the other hand, will hopefully only spot them as he drives into them [:)]

Note that everything's still at ALPHA stage in this, including the unit graphics, which are of the JTCS variant still. To be perfected by Mike, once he has finished the CS Vietnam unit graphics first [:)]

For the record, here's an ALPHA screenshot with JTCS units, before Mike's set his Graphics Editor on them. And the terrain is a work-in-process very much as well. Can't wait [:)]

Edit: Normal conditions with Middle East tiles looked way too sunburnt, here's the same on Soft Ground Conditions. Better.

Campaign Series Vietnam: ALPHA graphics: Curious about seeing some units! Here's a glance at some Cavalry units, organized as they would in 1968, that you'll find in the game, with the various options for displaying them on the map.

Big Ivan -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (7/1/2018 9:13:51 AM)

That's just plain sweet gentlemen![&o][&o]

Very nice detail on the 3D icons, very nice. As for the 2D w/3D icons, someone said back in one post the need for the "white"
outline to stay and that is evident here. The "white" outline makes the counters look clear and crisp in my opinion.

I haven't played yet with the 3D icons in 2D in CSME favoring the "black silhouette" instead. But looking at them in this post I'm going to
give it a try for sure just to get acclimated for when CS'Nam hits my rig!

Cheers![:)]

BigDuke66 -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (7/1/2018 5:36:20 PM)

All good but 2d with 2d looks not useful, more like retro C64 era.

Warhorse -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (7/1/2018 5:56:04 PM)

They are not touched yet, old stuff resized, bear with us!!

Warhorse -> NVA/VC Supply cache (7/1/2018 9:10:30 PM)

This week, among many others, here is a supply cache for the NVA/VC/VM.

Indeed. There's now three (3) new larger 2D zoom levels compared to the legacy JTCS stuff, which is of the size of the current 2D Extreme Zoom-out view.

Everything, but everything, needs to be redrawn, and is being redrawn. It just takes some time to do it.

Of course, a retro C64 sounds like a good thing, as such [;)]

benpark -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (7/3/2018 1:05:49 PM)

This is looking great. Can't wait for the WW2 titles.

And again- Thank you very much for the extra layer of zoom in both 2D and 3D. This game engine/team is the standard for me for how to resurrect older titles (which might be harder than starting from scratch!).

benpark -> RE: NVA Heavy Machinegun (7/3/2018 1:11:23 PM)

A question probably for Warhorse- how are you guys doing the isometric 3D stuff?

I did some Squad Battles mods for the 3D view, and found I had to 3D model everything, then output to 2D sprite. A huge amount of work (as I had to model everything in 3D first!)- so I wonder at the number of units yo ave to do.

If you guys are hand-painting these 3D graphics, you are a truly...special human beings.
