A ballistics test of a 16" projectile fired against a section of armoured plating intended for Shinano took place at Dahlgren, VA in 1946.

That chunk of metal is at the Washington Navy Yard. Cool place to visit.

you really should change the topic name, somewhere there is someone named Shinano.
Back to the subject, I saw a photo somewhere of a 16" shell fired from the Mass off Africa
at the French. It did not explode and came to rest a "few decks" down. It was a big chunk
of metal. Not sure I would have wanted to be the ordinance guy on that one.

"Therefore, these plates are the only warship armor plates that could not be completely penetrated by ANY gun ever put on a warship when installed leaning back at 45°, as they were in the actual turrets!!! "according to the link above the penetration occurred with an of "OBLIQUITY: Near-normal (0°)" .so I think that means no angle which would be pretty close. A shell fired at a distance probably would hit at an angle and would not have penetrated. The report is a bit confusing but it appears that the armor was pretty darn good
