demyansk -> Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/3/2015 10:12:42 PM)

I just started playing the European Wargame Escalation game on Steam and both games are probably similar not considering the graphics. Of course one is a rts and the other is a top down game.

Any of you guys play both?

Eugen's Wargame series was the gateway game that kinda led me to titles like Flashpoint.

The Wargame series is, classically, an RTS. It's also much more arcadey and has a focus on a "balance meta" rather than historical accuracy. Plus plenty of other gripes with the developers...
That being said, it depends on your tastes. They're really not in the same category, but on a game-to-game basis, I prefer Flashpoint Campaigns by a large margin.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/4/2015 1:15:42 AM)

I have a fundamental problem calling EE a wargame. Its a pure RTS with "war-like" paint on it. It's an apples to rocks comparison. The good side of EE is that it does bring some new folks into war gaming. The down side is folks think wargaming should be RTS like in function. It's a mixed bag. [sm=00000436.gif]

Tazak -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/4/2015 1:28:05 PM)

I tried the first 2 versions, its not bad as RTS goes, I liked their campaign side in the 2nd one(?) where you selected which units deployed where and purchasing extra formations during the campaign but I'm not overly keen on RTS genre in general but wouldn't dare compare them to flashpoint [8|]

With respect, European Wargame Escalation is not a wargame... A better comparison ( although it is tactical and not operational as FC:RS is) would be Battlefront's Combat Mission Black Sea.

+1 to Swamp_Yankee

Always open for a PBEM ass-whoopin, Captain! [sm=tank2-39.gif]

A real wargame or not, I've really enjoyed Eugen's series. It also opened my eyes that modern wargaming could be even more thrilling than WW2, that's why it was also the main gateway for me to FC:RS. :)

budd -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/7/2015 3:22:15 PM)

I find most RTS games are the same thing in a different skin most times.Too fast paced clicky for me, seems like you should slam a few red bulls and play the game, seems like you have to always be doing something while playing. That being said i do own them all[Damn steam sales] and i can play them in small stretches. Since i was turned on to that program that lets you slow the game down to a near pause whenever you like i enjoy it more. I'd take flashpoint every time and twice on sunday, but to each its own.

SwampYankee68 -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/7/2015 9:10:33 PM)

They can be fun, Tinker, for sure. Check out Black Sea though, for even more modern era gaming!

Xenomorph -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/7/2015 10:25:52 PM)

I'm always amazed at rts games. They can have brilliant graphics but no time to enjoy them bc...you're basically in a frantic click-fest the entire time. They can have a fun variety of unit types but there's no time to enjoy them (ie utilize them with any tactical sensibility) bc... you're basically in a frantic click-fest the entire time. They can have terrain that could allow you to have fun making use of it through meneuver but you can't...bc you're basically in a frantic click-fest the entire time. What's most amazing is that there are so MANY rts games and they're all basically the same thing just with different "skins". I remember playing Total Annihilation back in the day and thinking "well, this is kinda fun but I can't wait til they come out with a turn-based version that, ya know, actually gives you time to think and make a tactical decision or two." To my utter amazement that's never happened. Not to disparage rts fans but wouldn't you think after 100s of rts games, somebody might give it a shot. I've seen on rts boards where they make fun of turn-based fans. I'm thinking, "you mean like chess? Yeah, whoever came up with that stupid game."

budd -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/8/2015 4:55:32 AM)

Chess was my very first IGOUGO game[:)]

CapnDarwin -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/8/2015 2:53:45 PM)

Sadly, RTS games look cool, but you have to enjoy the click-fest state of them. I realized early on that the AI had me because it could click and order hundreds of times faster than myself or you make one timing mistake building or moving a unit and your game is over before it really started. Basically, not my cup of tea, but I know a number of folks love them and that is cool. They are not really wargames IMHO. Just a game with war like units. Again, if it brings folks over the fence to take a look at what we do for games, that is great too. [8D]

Yeah, I bought it about immediately when it came out, it's one of my favourite games alongside FC:RS and TOAW3. :)

Not long ago I was trying to get into the Air Land Battle. I has some great graphics, the units stats are very detailed, on the surface there is some depth there to explore. Unfortunately I gave it up after a month or so. The stuff is happening too fast, IMO that kind o games are aimed towards a younger demographics, namely hyperactive teenagers. As some stated above, I agree that right now, the best modern wargames are Red Storm and CM Black Sea. They are different enough to be complementary to each other. In terms of playability and pure enjoyment I still favor Red Storm though.

Tinkershuffle -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/8/2015 6:28:52 PM)

For those who are struggling with the game speed in Wargame-series, I recommend you to try those so called tactical 10v10 multiplayer matches where you control only handful of units. Co-operative gameplay is one the reasons why I enjoy the series, I wish in the future OTS could implement some sort of co-op/team game mechanic to FC also.

budd -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/8/2015 9:46:03 PM)

here's a link to the post with the link to the program that i use to slow the games down to give orders, helped me enjoy the game more. link in the first post. I could slow the game down to 15% of normal on my system without any graphic weirdness, when i went to 10% i had graphic issues.

RangerX3X -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/8/2015 10:37:19 PM)

I really wanted to get into European Escalation as it has nice graphics and the mission design and deck capabilities give it a unique twist; however I just could never fully embrace it.

Yes Budd, I agree, I forgot about Black Sea game.

I played a rts game on Saturday, EE and it was a joke

Do you have that link for that program that slows the game down?

I like the one minute turns from games like Cmbb and the newer games from battleground.

demyansk -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/9/2015 9:34:46 AM)

Oh,sorry I didn't read all the posts, thanks for the link. That's what I'm s wrong with rts. I have no time playing. The game to zoom down to ground level to position my tanks on the downslope.

I guess the we go system is the alternative from the battlefront games

Does the program mess around with the mp side of play?

budd -> RE: Flashpoint vs Wargame Escalation (11/9/2015 9:39:48 PM)

Don't know about mp, my interest didn't last that long and I'm not much for rts mp, so I never tried it. Maybe in the thread linked someone mentions it.
