Chuske -> Tutorial: How to Air Transport Supplies (11/7/2015 11:47:52 AM)

Relevant manual sections 5.4.5.1 and 17.3.7

There has been several questions in the forum about airdropping supplies. This is particularly important skill for using in the Torch scenario as you will need to move supplies forward to units that may not have access to nearby functioning port.

Here are the main steps:-

1) In the ground phase press F9 twice to get into AIR TRANSPORT Freight mode
2) Left click on the staging airbase (don't forget this step!) that is near to a depot with supplies and is on route from your transport squadrons bases to the units needing supply.
3) Shift-Right click on the unit or airbase that you want to receive the supplies, this will open the screen to select the airgroups that will fly the supplies in.

At step 3 you can also right click and let the AI pick airgroups but I prefer to select the groups on the supply run myself. Also note that using level bombers to transport supplies costs you 1 admin point (AP) per group, dedicated transport groups don't cost APs.

Transport planes are much more effective than level bombers, as level bombers cargo capacity is halved for carrying freight compared to bomb load.

The hex you send the supplies to can either be to an airbase where supplies can be unloaded or drop by parachute to a non-airbase hex (airbase delivery is more efficient). The supplies will distribute to units in the selected hex and those adjacent to it.

Example

I want to transport supplies to units in Tobruk

I have 3 transport groups, 316th USAAF is nearer Tobruk (not on image) but is not near a depot with supplies, I have the 117th next to Alexandria and the 267th near Alamein. We will use the 117th as its right next to the large well stocked Alexandria depot.

I've now selected AIR TRANSPORT Freight mode and now will left-click the 117th airbase as the staging base

I now shift-right click Tobruk airbase to order a supply run to Tobruk airbase. This group selection screen opens and I have selected the 117th (highlighted in yellow). To start the run I will click the launch button

The supply drop goes ahead, you can see the text "66 tons of freight delivered" this shows the supply run has worked, units in Tobruk and hexes next to it will now get supplies

Is step 2 necessary if you don't care where supply comes from? I tried to follow Manual section 5.4.5.1 and didn't select a staging base. Since the manual seems to say that this is optional step. But I wasn't able to air transfer supplies. I assumed it was because I had used up all of the air during the Air execution phase. Next turn I'll try following this closer and see if it works.

Thanks!
Rick

In theory it is optional but I always use it as if you select it you have control. The staging base controls where all your transport groups fly to first to form up, best to make sure it is on route, I find the automatic selection often doesn't work for me.

If supplies still aren't flying after selecting a staging base then you have to check you have planes in range and they have spare miles. Range includes flying to the staging base and also from staging base to the drop off point. You also need a depot with supplies near where the transports are based.

For the allies, I will build airfields in London so they can base out of it near the national supply center.

Also all the major ports as they have depots that hold a lot of supplies.

For the axis, I build airfields in the cities of the Ruhr....Essen Duisburg...that area.

Thanks for replies. I'll walk back through this.

THanks
