PJJ -> The Role of Finland (11/27/2015 1:45:51 PM)

I'm thinking about getting this game; it seems very interesting.

I have a question regarding the role of the Finnish army in Barbarossa (I couldn't find an existing thread about this). Historically, the Finnish leadership didn't want the army to advance too deep into the Soviet Union, being mostly concerned about getting back the lands that were lost to Soviets in the Winter War of 1939-1940 and securing the country's borders with easily defensible terrain. This decision was one of the factors that helped the Red Army hold Leningrad, as the Finn didn't seriously support German attempts to subdue the city.

Is this historical Finnish reluctance to go too far somehow modelled in the game? Or can the Finns freely march on to Moscow, if the player or the AI wants to attempt it?

depends on settings used, but yes to both

also if you miss manage them, they can quit on there own as well, no matter how hard you try and keep them in it.

so the choice is your's on how far you push depending on settings in some campaigns / battles, or keep them on there side of the boarder and safe, or not depending on the case[;)]

it all depends on what settings you use or select at start

depending on your play style and ability, mines low so chose easy[:D][;)]

Okay, thanks for the reply! Glad to hear they haven't ignored the historical realities of that corner of the Eastern front. :)

no it plays out well tbh if you stay on your side or cross it, you just need to manage them well, great fighters the Fins, good in both attack and defence, but need to be used with caution as they won't suffer high looses for silly moves in attack or defence in the open, but get them in woods or in any sort of defensive ground, and they are masters, or hit and run attacks and love to use ice :) which many don't hint hint :)

I just had the Finns surrender on me, totally didn't see that one coming, be careful with them!

you manage them well, they can stay all the way through, or don't and lose them in a month or 2 of it starting[:-]

Yeah if you do too much with Finland and get the Finnish troops wrecked that clears up two Soviet armies in the north sector which can be massive.
