I know this isnt a place for windows help...but maybe some one cand lend a hand

I started up my comp after a normal shutdown and when I restarted my display was 640x400 with 16 colors
And worst of all my mouse pointer would not show up

I was thinking my graphics card had burnt out...but if that was the case id get no display at all.
In safe mode I can get a mouse pointer but cant seem to fix my display
Im running windows 98 SE

Any advice?

It sounds like a video card driver corruption. In safe mode right click my computer, select properties then device manager. Look for anything that has a Red stop sign or a !. Also look for multiple installs of the same exact device. If all this look fine, uninstall the video card then restart the computer into normal mode. Windows should reinstall the video card and it's drivers and this might cure the problem. Also look at display properties and make sure the proper monitor is installed. Check for viruses, scandisk and defrag. Keep us informed! Good luck

Delete all your mouse drivers from system control panel and reboot. PNP should fix it then and your pointer will come back. That may fix the video as well, if it doesnt, itll be easy enough to reapply/redownload your video driver at that point. When your in system control panel be on the lookout for other "odd" devices that have exclamation points or other abnormalities. You may want to delete some of those as well as PNP may have "found" something already present and caused some sort of conflict for you with mouse or video..

Ok everything is back to normal

Im still missing the "msmouse.vxd" file

Thats a Windows virtual driver that is part of the Windows 98 install. Go to Start>Run>type sfc.exe, click OK>select "Extract One File From Installation Disk", specify the file name and the location to extract the file from, which will be your cd drive with the Windows 98 cd in it.

Try Start/Run "SFC" without the ' System File Check.

msmouse.vxd might be reinstalled...
