Spending some amazingly fun hours with NI had me thinking again about immersion factor and visuals. [8D]

The current display gives great immersion for playing this:

Or, this:

But for NI, and so many other pre-1985 scenarios, we are working in this:

And would see the world more like this:

Or perhaps in here:

And certainly in here:

Any thoughts on providing a different look and feel for the user interface, allowing the user to select a time period of their choice? [8D]

I realize it is a bit of an eye candy thing, definitely catering to the game aspect of things, but on the other hand it appears it would be rather orthogonal to the other game features you are working on so it could be handled separately.

Just a thought... [:)]

Edit: Fixed dead hotlink (sorry, know hotlinking is impolite...)

Sure, let's create another gigantic debug & support headache by adding a duplicate map-rendering pipeline with its own peculiarities and quirks.

Gonna pay for it?

Actually if he's willing to pick up all the steam input on Ye olde plotting board skin it might be worth it for the laughs.

FWIW we've been discussing skinning a good deal these days and do appreciate the ideas!

Highly relevant question.

If it is just about changing color schemes and fonts to make the main map look like a flag plot/DRT navigational plot or a ROTOR style situation map, and the "ready aircraft" screen to look like a backwards-written grease-pen-on-glass display, such a mod might be worth $5 - $10 based on how good it looks. Same amount again for another reskin looking like a SAGE blue room or early NTDS display system. So yes, in my view you could monetize that.

The other extreme would be to use your current simulation system as a backend and build an entirely new display system on top, e.g., a 688(I) or Aegis GotF style game using Command as the game engine. It would run the same scenarios as Command (where applicable), and scenario developers would use the same scenario editor, but the user would interact with the scenario in a completely different way. That would be en entirely new game that could be prized accordingly.

Something in between might also work, just thinking out loud here.

I would not expect to get an entirely new look-and-feel for free.
