There is a good tutorial scenario. The documentation for that walks you through turn by turn. The documentation can be found in your Documentation folder.

I do not enjoy when I order a unit to move among a stack, I cannot tell which units have orders and which do not by glancing on the map.

Best way to check a stack is to hover the mouse cursor over and check the fly out menu that pops up showing all the units. From there you can look at the order code on the lower right of the counters.
