Blabsawaw22 -> Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 3:15:44 AM)

Quick question,

I have a RamDisk program that I can use to make a RamHardDrive..

I have 16 gigs of ram and if I say take 4-6 gigs of my Ram and install Distant Worlds to it, Would this really affect anything??

Would the jittery glitching and shudder go away? (of 50 ships on the screen trying to click to attack..)

I mean I have a 2gig Nvidia Card and I7Quad Core with 840 Evo SSD I'm running Distant Worlds on now.. but late game it gets a little crazy.. not terrible but just wondering if RamDisk will solve the final push over the hurdle of smoothness I want..

no, ram disks give better access time than HDD and even SSD, but issue maybe related to either graphics or how it was designed / programmed, but worth a try, as you have nothing to loose, as it's free, easy to setup and worse that can happen is that it doesn't work.

but look at the figures, with HDD being slowest, next is SSD, while your's is a fast one, system ram is faster still, DDR 3 or 4? then you have vga memory which can be on the later cards DDR5, which helps more than anything, as access time delay equals latency, lag or jitter, so for me a faster card with more memory would help more than a ram drive, as the difference between a EVO and system ram will be a lot still, but maybe not the boost that the vga needs as that's where the delay is on displaying the information, not accessing it imo...

I5 to I7 only increases speed the information is sent along the bus, depending on bus speed

For the most part, you'll get faster CPU performance from Core i7 than Core i5. The majority of Core i7 desktop CPUs are quad-core processors, but so are the majority of Core i5 desktop CPUs. This is not always the case, as there are dual-core mobile Core i7 processors and many dual-core mobile Core i5 CPUs, so what you need is a faster single core bus speed and Significantly higher clock speed plus more onchip cache.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4690K

while 2gb and 4gb vga cards at the same Core Clock speed would give the same results, altering the resolution alter this, as the larger the res, the more memory it takes to display so the 4gb card will be quicker with a high res setting, well tbh the 2gb slows down and the 4gb stays the same, it doesn't increase it speed etc, just has the ability to display more info at once...

now the geek bit,

GeForce GTX 960 standard

- Core Base Clock: 1190MHz
- Core Boost Clock: 1253MHz
- Memory Clock: 7010MHz
- Memory Size: 2048MB GDDR5

V's

GeForce 980Ti

- Core Base Clock: 1051MHz
- Core Boost Clock: 1140MHz
- Memory Clock: 7010MHz

why pay more to actually get less core speed?

well here's why

GeForce GTX 960 standard

- Memory Bus: 128-bit
- CUDA Cores: 1024

V's

GeForce 980Ti

- Memory Bus: 384-bit
- CUDA Cores: 2816

core speeds the same, bus bus speed well loads quicker, so it gets the same amount of information, just get it quicker, and in game play terms, it's a lot quicker and well worth the extra if money is no object that is[:D][;)]

and thanks for answering

crap.. well I can't upgrade my graphics card on my laptop.. so I guess that's not happening..

It's a Nvidia 755m by the way..

the only problems with laptop chips, is memory, most don't have it, is it a dedi card?

as if you had the same card in a desktop it would be faster, to get them into a laptop same as cpu's, they cut them down, and i don't mean in size, i mean in power use and less of well everything that you need, power = performance.

but saying all that, the chip isn't a bad or low end one either, it should be fine for the game tbh but not as fast as the same card in a desktop.

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8)
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

this will show or tell you ^^

for me may be better to disable a few things that may speed up the game in others ways, setup a gaming profile, so it loads as little as possible at start up.

turn off everything that makes windows look nice, so really basic.

make sure everything is up to date driver wise, play games from a admin account and run as admin, with net off, AV off, power on plugged in, power settings on max power so nothing disabled, screen saver and power saving modes off

then see if you get a % better performance.

ram is always nice to have, but also make sure you have plenty of SSD space as well, but gaming on a laptop can be a pain, as you need extra power in a pc you can always swap bits, but with most laptops that's not a option, but is nice to be able to be portable, but you loose power as well as real power would suck the battery too quick, that's why they don't put full core I7 in them, same as full on vga cards, as battery life would get you into windows then close down and need charging[:(]

Blabsawaw22 -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 5:55:40 AM)

ok attached.. I like your ideas..

I never thought to play as Admin or things like that.. but I think I have a pretty good gaming laptop to be honest..

but I always plug in my power and I do have the system pretty tweaked .. it is a dedicated card..

CPU is i7 4700mq

zakblood -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 7:38:48 AM)

like i said, you have a good setup, but a desktop with the same spec parts but not the laptop versions would not only be cheaper, but quicker [:(]

turning off eye candy in windows, depending on which version you use, can speed it up a %,

running in admin mode, free's up another fps in scores, again depending on windows version mind you, as it lets the app / program run in a protect mode and or use memory better with full unrestricted elevated rights and privileges.

https://help.ea.com/uk/article/how-do-i-run-a-program-or-a-game-as-an-administrator/

tweak power safe laptop settings for always on and no power saving settings used, yet use more power and run it hotter yes, but why have a I7 then tell it to turn into a I5? as power saving is cutting down the things it can do, and as quick.

what you pay for in a laptop, is cpu first regarding cost vga second as that can be high end spec, then memory but can be equally to vga with high amounts with screen size being low, so a 17" screen in a I7 laptop with 8gb or even 16gb of ram is or can be cheap now days, but add in a gaming card can double the cost same as the ram from 8 to 16gb, so a high end spec can be high end prices.

from OTT ones like

to medium level ones,

to normal gaming ones and entry level imo

my local, but there's plenty of others and custom ones while higher priced tend to be more gaming made, while off the shelf work, these just work better and most of the time for longer.

Blabsawaw22 -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 7:56:19 AM)

Ok well thats pretty awesome. Thanks for the replies..

At this point in my life I seem to be on the move (traveling alot).. so I am forced to a laptop... But I don't mind especially after looking at those and I was even already considering to get a Asus ROG laptop for my next gaming laptop..

I don't care for SLI though.. I guess having one video card would bring down the price on the high-end one! I just read about too many problems with SLI.. but who knows.

anyway I'll probably just attempt playing Distant Worlds from the test RamDisk.. for the heck of it..

and thank you for the link to run in Admin mode.. I never thought of using that..

zakblood -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 9:03:22 AM)

Asus ROG laptop are really good, high end are priced very competitively in the high end laptop gaming market

let us know your budget and when your ready and pm me and i'll spec one for you,

high end none sli ones

then the beast,

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-gt72-6qf-032uk-dragon-edition-17.3-fhd-ips-g-sync-intel-i7-6820hk-nvidia-gtx-980-8gb-gddr5-ga-lt-229-ms.html

higher performance but at a premium price, if money's no object, i'd have one, well tbh i'd have any as there way better than mine[:D][;)]

with laptops, what you pay next year is out of date and half the price and twice as slow as the year after, but that's life...

sometimes it better to have less in one part but not to skimp on another, for me screen size should be 17" with a faster core I5 or I7, 8 to 16gb is more than enough, but a good high end vga card, also a pure SDD or hybrid if size is important or more needed etc...

for me if budget is tight, a high end I5 with a higher dual core clock speed is better than a lower speed quad core I7, with ram, 8gb is more than enough for most, with 16gb only if money is left, with VGA being number one part needed for games, with a good CPU mind you, but doesn't have to be the fastest, but SSD ir hybrid is a must as it slows down everything else, and for windows there can only be windows 10, as it's memory management is far better than any of the others imo....

and best suited for later hardware, drivers and games.

Blabsawaw22 -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/24/2015 7:12:26 PM)

Ha love the laptops..

I will absolutely keep you in mind and PM you when I buy one, I don't have a huge need for a totally new laptop now, (I think, you've now seen my system)

but I will tell you this, before this I had a MacbookPro for $2500, so that is the kind of money I throw away (I mean spend) on computers.. haha..

I'm not that rich but I have no bills and I travel for my work, (which is entertainment) so you can see I have nothing but downtime and time to play games! haha..

I can make a pure profit of $2000 a month when I don't purchase anything out of desire.. so you can see how I can pay off a $2500 computer in 1.5 months.. etc.. remember no other bills.. (well ok a cell phone bill.. but that's nothing.)

HerpInYourDerp -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/26/2015 2:14:14 PM)

This game is hugely CPU-bottlenecked. Having a RAMDisk, more RAM, etc. won't do anything to improve performance in this game in any tangible way. This game doesn't even utilise the GPU at all if you're post-WinXP.

Blabsawaw22 -> RE: Run Distant Worlds from Ram? (12/26/2015 9:19:23 PM)

Well, Not that it runs terrible right now but man, what I guess I gotta go to the Intel Core i7-6820HK Quad Core Processor with a $600 motherboard to get smoothness in late-game play-ability? haha

I actually will buy a crazy new expensive laptop in a year though..
