frizt -> How to deal with coastal defence units? (3/29/2003 9:43:57 PM)

My enemy has gathered 4 or 5 CD units on 1 base. How can I land troops without suffering heavy loses? My way so far is to unload the troops to the beach next to the base and later walk them over to the base. But shortland or Kavieng are just 1 island with no other landing place.

Use Bombardment consisting of bigger guns then they have. BB's are great for this, just don't put smaller ships that do not have the range in or they will pull the BB's in closer. CA's are fairly safe, but CL -> are targets.

Also, bomb the snot out of the port (which will disrupt the CD units) with aircraft.

HI Frist

and of course, when and where you can, cut the supply and keep it cut, if the troops are hungry and the guns are out of ammo, it is a lot easier to take them out

keep ships in the harbor, Lr-Cap over the base, to keep the fast transports from dropping off supplies and the air transports from dropping in, along with the bombing and blasting

What about including DD and DMS in the Bomb. TF?

I am honestly not sure if DD's will assist in the bombardment, but if they do, they will bleed. Most CD units have guns that will hurt a light cruiser and turn DD's into swiss cheese.

DMS's are for sweeping mines, why on earth would you waste them on Bombardment missions. Not only will they get hurt, but they will pull your other ships into the minefield while clearing it from what I have run into. You want to keep any form of minesweeper solo so they can do their jobs without hurting other forms of shipping. Mixing ships with DMS & MSW results in them hitting mines which will spoil your day.

BB's can hit mines and still be in play, a single mine to a CL or smaller is a very serious threat of loosing your ship.

CD's will not fire on mine sweepers in the hex as long as they are NOT part of a convoy that is bothering the base (transport, fast transport, bombardment, etc)

I've lost a gun on a heavy cruiser (Japanese) before so there is SOME risk at exposing them to CD units. It's not as bad as light cruisers and smaller ships, though. Best to also have some air attacks to soften the defenders up as well. (And it seems like CD units work well aganist ground troops.)

Computer manage to scramble fighters no matter if it has fuel in the base. With 0 supply, the CD still shoot the hell out of my convoy. Is it because I am on Hard level?

Actually, DMS units are necessary if you're trying to bombard a mined enemy base. Running a bombardment TF into mined enemy base without minesweepers is messy to say the least. While you cannot add a MSW unit to a Bombardment (or Surface) TF, the DMS is fast enough to keep up with the big boys (but be wary of the range, the DMS can't go very far). The DMS will take care of the minefield, and your bombardment TF can have lots-o-fun.

It's true tho about the larger units attacking the CD guns. CD guns are about 3" to 5" range, maybe 6". The Japanese have one unit that has 8" guns I believe. But if you want to completely avoid the CD guns, make your bombardment TF with CAs and BBs, and they'll never even enter the range of the CD guns. It has been my observation that the DMS units are NOT participating in the bombardment (at least the CD units have never shot at them).

Stuff as many BBs, CAs, CLAAs, CLs in your TF, put a couple of DDs for anti-sub work (if you think they may be there), and a pair of DMSs and you're good to go.
